Using the data to calculate the actual number of vehicles nationwide affected by emission control tampering the Epa placed the figure at 26 percent of All cars and Light trucks that arc subject to emission inspection and Ami tampering programs. According to a similar formula the Agency estimated the nationwide mis fueling rate at 16 percent. Tampering increases with the age of the vehicle and is More common in Light trucks with a rate of 14 percent than in passenger cars with a 5 percent rate the study said. It often involves alterations to a vehicle s catalytic converter or exhaust Gas recirculation system the Epa said. Catalytic converters Are removed for different reasons.
