European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 03, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday decembers 1985 the stars and stripes Page 25 Irish once spurned Vince Lombard by Dave Anderso new York not _ n ils passion for Ncncy Noire Dame has changed football coaches again Bui in ils Quick hiring of Lou to l7. Following Gerry Faust s resignation How Many interested co aclies out there did to ignore twice in develops now notre dim had once ignored Vince Lombardi. During the reign of inc Green Bay packers in inc National football league two decides ago Lombardi was trying to convince Willie Davis that he understood Why Sall pro defensive end always resented having been traded by inc Cleveland Browns several years car lick Willie the packers coach said in the privacy of his office. Do you know that i Nappi to for the coaching Job at notre Dame twice and never got As much As an acknowledgement to my letter quietly and quickly this scene is described by Jerry Kramer in Distant the football Book of the year that the former packers guard wrote Wilh Dick Schlapa sequel to their instant replay Best seller that recorded the 1967 season. Tears wrote Kramer of that moment in the coach office came to Lombardi s in retrospect notre Dame must have wept too Al though no Date is mentioned As to when Lombardi applied for the Job As head coach there the years 1953 and 1958 coincide with changes both at notre Dame and Init career. Following the 1953 season Terry Brennan was hired by notre Dame to succeed the legendary Frank Leahy Lombardi was an assistant coach at army but he soon joined the new York giants staff under Jim Lee How Ell. Following the 1958 season Joe Kuharich was hired by notre Dame to succeed Brennan Lombardi was still on the giants staff but Early in 1959 he would go to Green Bay u general manager and coach. Vince never mentioned to me that he had applied for the notre Dame Job but he was a very restless Guy in those years says Wellington Mara the giants co owner who first knew him when they were Fordham students. Vince was so motivated to be a head coach i m sure he applied for several jobs when they opened up. And those two years when notre Dame changed coaches certainly fit with what Vince was doing at the Lombardi deserved answers to his two letters but each letter was probably one of do ens if not hundreds that notre Dame received. Maybe his letters got lust in the shuffle. Or maybe they got ignored because Noire Dame was still intent on maintaining its tradition of hiring a former notre Dame player As its head coach. Brennan and Kuharich each fit that requirement ask nuts Rockne had. As Leahy had. Eventually in 1964, notre Dame hired an outsider named Ara Parseghian who produced a 9-1 record that year and a 95-17-4 record Over 11 seasons. By 1964, of course Lombard was no longer interested in applying for the notre Dame Job. By then he was established As Green Bay s most cherished civic Monument. By then he had developed two nil championship teams in 1961 and 1962, and in 1965, 1966 and 1967 his packers would be the first team to win three consecutive nil titles including the first two superbowl games. And yet. Suppose notre Dame had hired Lombardi instead of Brennan or later instead of Kuharich _ it s reasonable to assume that Vince Lombardi Lombardi would have had the same Impact on notre Dame history and on its players that he had on nil history and on his Packer players. His Impact on the packers runs through Distant replay the Way the Lombardi sweep ran through nil defences. You Don t do things right once in a Kramer remembers Lombardi saying. You do them right All two decades later All the famous packers names such As Bart Starr Paul Hornung Jim Taylor Forrest Gregg Willie Davis Ray Nitschky and Herb add racy reiterate in Distant replay what Lombardi meant to them. I think of him very Day says add racy now a flail of Fame cornerback. I love my father who is also de ceased but i Don t think of my father every Puii apr. Even More significant arc inc tributes from the packers who were not so famous. Bob Long was a lilt a known packers wide receiver who later played for Lombard on the redskins in l%9 before the coach died of cancer. When Vince Lombardi asks you to come Back and play for Long says. That s got to be the greatest compliment you can receive As a football player. And Asa at the time his packers griped about Lombardi his drive his intensity. Now they cherish him the Way mid dle aged people cherish their Best College and High schoolteachers. Willie Davis once told me linebacker Dave Kobin son says that whenever he goes into a sales meeting. Vince would go with him. Now i know what he meant. Every Lime i Start a sales meeting i find Lombardi conducting it. It s eerie. I find myself spouting Lombard isms when i least expect i was so Lucky to get with a coach who was t worried about winning and losing halfback red Mack says. I know that s a funny thing to say about Lombardi but he really was t. He was worried about the human aspect. He knew the winning would come from Lombardi pushed me and pushed me tight end Marv Fleming said and then a lot of times he d put his hands on my shoulder and say. Way logo there no one else saw him do it but i saw it i Felt it and i said to myself this Man likes me and in s . For him to push me. In s . Love it. That Kramer remembered a training Camp when Lombardi gave the packers a 20-queslion lest on nil Rule changes. "1 Don t expect you to get All 20 answers right the packers Couch told his players. I just look it and missed two questions Don t worry coach wide receiver Max my acc piped up. They la change those iwo the nil was t about to change those two rules. Just As notre Dame can l change ils history. Bui if Noire Dame Wilh whal it knows now of Lombardi could go Back to 1953 and 1958, in surely would pay More alien lion to i Host two letters.
