European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 16, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday december 16, 1985 the 1 ars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers rear readers i want to share a column by Peter Richmond who writes for the Miami Herald. Several readers sent it on and i believe it de serves As wide an audience As possible. Here it is worry about drugs not baseball i am not worried about the baseball players. I am worried about the pilots. I spent a few Days in key West where 1 struck up a casual Friendship with a Pilot for a european cargo Carrier. Me Flics 747s. He talked about accidents and close Calls. Nearly All accidents he said Are caused by human error. That includes the air traffic controllers and the mechanics. They All worry me. Maybe urinalysis is the Only answer. It s a Radical solution. But lives Are at stake. I m no worried about baseball players. I m worried about train engineers. Last october a cab Driver in Kansas City told me about the panic in rail Yards around his City. Several accidents involving freight trains had prompted a crack Down on substance abuse among train engineers and Crew members. I d never even thought about it. But sure enough the next year brought a spate of train wreck. I Don t know if the sup posed crackdown worked. If it did to i m wondering if random urinalysis in t the Only answer. It s humiliating and a giant violation of human rights if it s done with out consent but there arc lives at stake. I m worried about surgeons. I m Wor ried about Assembly line workers who put brakes on cars. I m worried about fire fighters and pilots of ferry boats. The ferry that carries people and cars to mar tha s Vineyard slammed into the Dock awhile Back. It s a huge boat that ferry. If it slammed something out in open water the scene would be too gruesome to imag Ine. I m worried about Drivers of school buses. I m not worried about ballplayers. A stoned ballplayer May not be the most appealing sight but he surely in t going to put my life in danger. I Don t want baseball players to be High. But As Long As the worst they can do is damage their image. I d rather Sec the indignation directed elsewhere. And As Long As everyone seems so keen on violating rights i have some suggestions do a spot random urinalysis Check on engineers bus Drivers and ferry pilots. And Check anyone with a Pilot s License every time he sets foot in the Airport. Also Check heavy machinery operators judges and jurors operators of carnival rides and construction workers who put up those 100-Story buildings. Check nurses and doctors and cabbies. And Don t forget the cops. Not possible impractical not if you want it if everyone put half of the Energy into pressuring their lawmakers about checking up on pilots and Drivers that they put into worrying themselves to death Over baseball players on cocaine the highways and airlines and rail lines would be a whole lot safer. There Are 3,575 government owned apartments in Stuttgart and More than 30,000 Community residents. There Are 284 government leased apartments. All soldiers Are entitled to la for 60 Days if necessary. They must apply for and justify any request for la for More that 60 Days. The Hilltop hotel is a transient facility and is Loo Small to provide for All incoming and outgoing soldiers. Therefore the initial stay is limited to 30 Days to make space available for the maximum number tips for shopping with Small children this in in regards to shopping with Small children during Winter. I Sec Many Little ones bundled up for siberian weather in the midst of Busy shopping in heated exchanges and commissaries. I just ache to say something to these Young parents but am afraid i la be told to mind my own business. As a Mother of five children i realize How difficult if not impossible it is to shop with Small children. 1 found the following guidelines to be most helpful when taking Small children to Exchange and commissary facilities. If at All possible make an arrangement with a Friend for child care or take turns with a spouse or Friend for one to care for the children while the other one shops. With this arrangement plan some Small drinks snacks and something to occupy the child. If neither of the former suggestions is feasible then remove All warm outer clothing including boots placing the clothing As a Cushion in the Bottom of the shopping Carl. A simple test of comfortable body warmth in an infant or toddler is to feel the Back of his neck. If it is wet with perspiration remove More clothing. Hopefully you will have More comfortable and happier shopping trips. It is Felt that the incoming Soldier can find a place to live after his first 30 Days whether that place is another hotel or housing on the local Economy. Bad will continue As Long As the government does not furnish Pov Crement owned or government i eased quarters. It is Gumc policy to House soldiers where they work if possible. If not Possi ble. A secondary area will be provided. Accordingly the Soldier is placed on two waiting lists. The Gumc has six housing areas one in each of its six sub communities. The effective Date of placement on these lists is the Date the Soldier was detached from his last duty assignment. Also the housing assignment process considers the number of bedrooms required to House the family. The age and sex of the children govern this. All of the above contribute to the wait ing time for assignment to government owned apartments. Adequate rental hous ing is available in the local area in the interim however. The Soldier has the option of accepting deferred family travel to Europe. While Stuttgart is one of very few communities that can state that housing is available either from the government or from the Economy. It is still the Soldier s Choice to bring his or her family. All of the above can be explained in detail by the family housing and housing referral service office of Gumc in build ing 112, Robinson Barracks. The greater Stuttgart military Community staff will take All measures necessary to make the transition of living and working in a for eign country As painless As possible.
