How you play the game dear editor for Many years i be heard lip service Given to the words it s not whether you win or lose but now you play the and for Many years i be come in Contact with coaches whose philosophy is win at All i be also come in Contact with some Fine coaches who Are truly dedicated to using sports As character building experiences and leaching Young people How to win and How to lose with Good sportsman like conduct. Coach Abbott from High school is one of those Fine coaches. Coach Abbott does t believe in bullying his wrestlers. He gives them constructive criticism in a non threatening manner and tells his wrestlers As Long As you give 100 percent you re a on january ii the High school wrestling was Al a six school meet where a coach from an opposing team displayed an egotistical abusive manner toward his athletes. This particular coach made a spectacle of himself by Abusi vely shouting and screaming at his wrestlers. I m not talking about shouting coaching tips excitedly. This tirade was even stopped by the referee at one Point. This coach displayed this abusive manner toward his wrestlers last season and now is Back at it again this season. What i Don t understand is How the parents let him get away with it. I was told that the reason i was upset by this coach was because a town had lost the meet to this team. I never gave that a thought because 1 did t feel our wrestlers were losers. Each one of our wrestlers gave 100 percent and that makes them winners. A Winner to me is epitomized by a 145-Pound Junior varsity freshman who went on the mat with a 167-Pound, 3-year varsity senior and gave it All he had. He went the three Peri ods. He lost the match but was a Winner to me who is proud to be his Mother and to his teammates. ,. I wish we had More coaches like coach Abbott. He does t Fucci it necessary to feed his ego at the expense of his athletes self image. A coach s behaviour is also a teaching tool. It a coach is a screaming tyrant he gives the message to his ath letes that it s of to act like a maniac no matter who it hurts. Hats off to you coach Abbott for your excellent coaching and teaching. Hooray also for our Kaiserslautern High school students who arc nil winners. Dorynda Barela Kaiserslautern Germany Evert Rolls past Graf in final of slims tournament key Biscayne Fla.
