This year s Monte Carlo rally was the scene of Many minor accidents these bashes and crashes being a Way of life where rallying is concerned. The cars Beautiful at the Start Are usually a mass of dents and rips at the finish. One of the most celebrated accidents in the Monte Carlo rally s history involved the Burly swedish Driver Eric Carlsson in his tiny Saab. The Little two stroke Saab from the mid 60s Era was a highly successful car in Carlsson s hands and rally Drivers called it the Jungle drum with Oil heating because of engine noise and the Oil Gas fuel mixture. Carlsson twice a Winner of the Monte Carlo rally had his share of accidents and his nickname was Eric on the roof which tells a lot about his driving personality. In one of the roof accidents the great swedish Driver lost control of his Saab on the approach to a Railroad crossing. The Saab crashed through the lowered crossing Gates and landed upside Down directly on the tracks. Carlsson and his co Driver gazed at each other in Stony silence the silence broken Only by the sound of pencils stopwatches notebooks and other rally impediments falling on the roof s Interior lining. From the distance came another sound. A whistle. Carlsson not one to get excited about anything merely said come we go now the train is the train did come but not before Carlsson and his co Driver had flipped their battered Saab Back onto its wheels and continued on their Way. Rally stories abound by the hundreds and Here is our favorite. It concerns a late British rally Driver journalist Tom Wisdom a proper British gentleman to the last touch including his monocle. On the Marathon London to Sydney rally Many years ago Wisdom and his co Driver had the misfortune of a mechanical breakdown in the wilds of the australian desert. Luckily a Little Village was within walking distance and once they got there they made Lor the Only bar in town. It was an extremely Grubby one with an unshaven hungover wretch doing the bar tending. Unperturbed by the Humble and unsavoury surroundings. Wisdom screwed on his monocle looked the place Over slowly and said to his co Driver what will it be old boy Daiquiri Tom Collins Gin fizz the co Driver who told us this Story called for a Frozen Daiquiri and Wisdom said very Well and i la have a Martini very cold but no Olive thank you. An onion will do the aussie bartender stared at them in disbelief then roared you la both have bloody warm Beer and bloody Well like ill the stars and stripes Page 15
