European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 14, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday March 14, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 writers contribute to debate Over Rock music lyrics i do not necessarily wish to become entangled in the recent Brouhaha Over any alleged dangerous influence on the moral fiber of our nation s precious youth being inundated by today s crude crass and Vul Gar Rock lyrics but i must cry foul when classical music and musicians Are dragged into the fray by cretinous attempts at rationalizing a sick culture. It goes without saying of course that most anti social behaviour is perpetrated by purple haired bunkers far More often than by aficionados of string quartets symphonies or opera individuals who formerly held exclusive rights to the denigration Long for the classical record then please be erudite enough to know that scheherazade was a symphonic suite not a Ballet that its programmatic Content had nothing to do with sexual orgies being rather the musical portrayal of some Sultan s wife Tell ing her husband an unending bedtime Story for 1,001 nights in succession to keep from losing her head that it was Mussorgsky and not Scriabin who was addicted to Al Cohol his dips Omania being a result of the death of his Mother that the nazis later adopted Wagner s military music particularly the March from Rienzi to their philosophy and not vice versa that Beethoven suffered from total loss of hearing and did not die mad or any angrier than you or i would if we could t hear those late period masterpieces and that Cho pin was neither fascinated by what was it Black magic or for that matter Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches Etc., the St is and spess Tuo a european edition capt Dale k. Of course classical composers put words to their music consider the Many oper As oratorios cantatas madrigals lieder and other textual creations but in Sev eral Hundred years All but the Best of their racy and Ribald lyrics have been relegated to Dusty musicological archives. If you really want to know what went on in the minds of some of these individuals you have but to read their interesting memoirs or collections of letters. And yes not All classical music a Misnomer since baroque romantic and modern periods Are also included in that definition is Good in the same sense that paint tossed on a Canvas by a Broom wielding hop head is bad if a Rembrandt portrait is Good. If classical music is so extremely Bor ing then Why does tin pan Alley steal Romany of its themes one thing hard Rock seems intent on not learning is that any musical element be it Melody Harmony rhythm dynamics Etc. Has to express variety and differences in nuance lest it become a monotonous drone. Actu ally extremely Boring is most Apt Here i too am a categorically opposed to censorship for society has always found some Means to regulate its own cultural tastes. After All without some kind of self imposed restriction we might be exposed to practically anything As reflections of the spirit of our there could even be moaners on every Street Corner an that would be just a Little too Cheeky. Or. F. Robert Weirauch Darmstadt Germany i m 19 years old and a Christian. I have listened to Rock music mostly heavy Metal for Many years now. Despite my taste in music my mind has not Degener ated. My Good grades in school never dropped and i still go to Church. I have never tried pot or any other illegal drugs. I wonder if those senators wives in Washington realize what they re doing. By picking put bands to be censored they re creating Folk heroes. Instead of stopping the bands music the senators wives Are opening up new ears to it. And then there is the argument that Rock v Roll causes its listeners to commit suicide murder rape Etc. If that were so then Why does t everyone who listens to Rock commit the same crimes those few who do have psychiatric problems not music selection problems. One of the things America has always stood for and one of the things that has always made it great is the right of free speech. What people sing or listen to is their own Choice. To further extend that right the stereo manufacturers of the world have provided a switch for those who do not care for what they re hearing. It s called a Power switch and it can returned either on or off. I am As concerned As anyone about the problems of today. It is sad the suicide rate is so High. It is sad the drug problem is so High. I am glad that others Are concerned also. But censoring Rock v Roll won t help because it won t solve the problems and it won t Stop the music. Pvt. Mark Kannenberg Schwa Ebisch Gemund Germany i would like to Point out another aspect to the latest discussion Over Rock of All i would rather use the term music for something which has Harmony rhythm Melody and therefore Beauty. Many different kinds of music not Only classical have these attributes. But roaring banging crooning Whin ing changing screeching howling and rattling from High powered electronic de vices is simply nerve wracking noise pollution which for some unknown reason is called and through All of that it is difficult to hear any lines. Even if hard Rock is Beautiful to you you can have it but please do not give it to me at All it makes me sick mad frustrated and depressed. Believe me i am not the one who will turn the switch on or go to a disco. I am not a masochist. Your music is aggressive and attacks me literally on the Street As it comes from your portable radios and blares from the cars passing by. I am at tacked in nearly every Public place and my neighbors attack me in my own build ing. You Force me to suffer from noise pressure and vibrations while i prefer quiet or my own Type of music. Please take into consideration that Pecan t close our ears against sound As we can close Pur eyes against Light. In this Era of sophisticated forces of destruction an advanced technology we do not have any device with which to shut out and eliminate noise or even lower the noise level. So please make noise for yourself Only by using a Walkman and leave others in the peace they have the right to. Ewa Fedorowicz Vicenza Italy Accident victim thanks rescuers i am writing this letter to you for publication because i owe my life and Good health to All the people mentioned below several of whom i Don t know nor expect to see again. If i have failed to mention any one i apologize and so will always include the unknown helpers in my prayers. I am assigned to he he Btry div arty 1st inf div fort Riley Kan., and deployed to Germany for reformer on Jan. 8. At about 7 30 . On Jan. 16 i was involved in a one vehicle Accident and was pinned under the jeep in which i was a passenger after it skidded off the Road. Be cause of the Quick courageous Effort of my Driver spec. 4 Hopson a sergeant Chevalier of Grafe Woehr and two German civilians the jeep was rolled off me and 1 was rushed to the Grafe Woehr clinic. There a very efficient and caring medi Cal team led by or. Maj Schoonover assessed my condition and provided the exact medical Aid my injuries required. I suffered no broken Bones or internal injuries but the blood flow to my upper body had been so restricted that broken blood vessels capillaries resulted in unconsciousness and Sei zures. After stabilizing my condition the Gra Fen Woehr team arranged for my medevac to the Nuernberg army Hospital ice via the Erlanger German Hospital for special tests. In route to Erlanger the medevac helicopter made a forced Landing due to weather and called a civilian German ambulance from a farm House. At the Nuernberg Hospital i was treated with kid gloves until i was out of danger and then i was encouraged and aided in my recovery on the general surgical Ward. When released for convalescent leave a local american took me in and gave me a Home away from Home. Last but not least the doctors and Chap Lains of the 1st inf div and the Nuernberg army Hospital patiently and effectively healed my wounds and listened to my fears and Hopes. To All these Many people i am forever grateful and thank god they acted when and How they did. One evening when i received a Surprise visit from Gen. Robert w. Sennewald i was the envy of other patients. His visit was the icing on the cake which All the others had baked to perfection. I wish them All Well and Pray they Are aided in their moments of crisis. To the officers and soldiers of the 1st div especially div arty who supported me personally and professionally thank you too. Your concern made me Happy Tobe with the big red one. Capt. Catherine a. Shinn fort Riley Kan. Dear Ann Landers like so Many women today i am working until the end of my pregnancy. Believe me i wish i could stay Home but i can t. I need every last dime i can scrape together. You have no idea How Many customers total strangers ask questions such As How much weight have you gained and when Are you due when i Tell them they say of my god you re so big you must be carrying twins or even worse Aren t you afraid you la drop that baby right Here then they rattle on about a Friend who gave birth in the elevator or the washroom because she could t make it to the Hospital in time. The Only person who has the right to Tell me what i can and cannot eat or drink is my doctor. If i want an occasional Beer or Glass of wine i d like to enjoy it without being told you re hurting your if i hear one More horror Story about a brain damaged baby whose Mother drank wine or Beer during her pregnancy i la scream. Please Tell All those folks who ask nun questions that it is Tough enough carrying this Load without trying to be tactful and pleasant to people who Are just Plain clods. Big belly in Boston dear . In Boston an excellent defense against crude questions is to ignore them. Act As if you did t hear a word. Silence is often More devastating than anything you can say. Try it. Dear Ann Landers recently you said giving some Home made treat was less expensive required More Effort and demonstrated More caring than buying something in a store. Please Ann Don t Lay yet another guilt trip on us already overworked american women. I have a husband in graduate school a 14-month-old son a Job and a very tight schedule. I am also an uninspired Medio Cre Cook and i can t bake a thing. We feel enormous pressure to be super we Are supposed to stay in shape like Jane Fonda achieve like Sandra Day o Connor entice like Joan Collins and run the House like june Cleaver. Excuse me if i Don t have time to make Peanut Brittle for your birthday. For those folks who cannot afford to Purchase gifts or simply prefer to give goodies from the Kitchen that s Fine. As for me if i d known you were coming i Dhave bought a Kalamazoo sue dear Mazoo i like your spirit. If i lived in Kalamazoo i d want you for a Friend. Thanks for feisty rejoinder. Dear Ann Landers can you stand one More letter about overweight people who ruin furniture i Hope so because i am a woman who tips the Scales at 190 pounds and those out raged victims know what they Are talking about. Most Large people Don t sit in a chair or sofa they fall onto it. I Learned years ago to use my Knees not my rear end to sit. When i get out of a chair i use leg and Power. One must develop Muscles to do this but it s Worth the Effort because it s much More Graceful and a lot easier on the furniture. Big mama who carries it Well Natchez dear mama you can come to my House and sit any place you want. Thanks for the last word on this subject.
