A University of Georgia presi Dent Fred Davison whose administration was rocked by a Federal lawsuit Over academic favouritism for student ath letes resigned thursday from the Post he has held for 19 years. Davison met with his six vice presidents and the school s 13 Deans to discuss his decision before making it Public. The vice presidents and Deans issued a statement after the meeting urging the Board of regents not to accept Davi son s resignation and urging Davison to reconsider. University spokesman perk Robins said Davison drafted his letter of resignation wednesday night at his Home where he met with four or five close associates. The Resig nation is effective july 1, he said. The letter distributed at thursday s meeting was to be sent to state University system Chancellor Dean Propst Robins said. The announcement came one Day after the Board of regents which governs the state s 33 Public colleges postponed a decision on whether to renew Davison s contract for another year. The Board said it wanted to see the results of an investigation into Georgia s remedial devel of mental studies program before re appointing Davison. The developmental studies program was the focus of a Federal lawsuit filed by Jan Kemp a former English instructor who alleged she was fired for protesting preferential treatment of athletes in the remedial program. Kemp whose suit named developmental studies director Leroy Ervin and vice president for academic affairs Virginia Trotter As defendants was awarded $2.57 million by a . District court jury last month. In his letter of resignation the 56-year-old Davison said i consider the deferral of my reappointment a per Sonal and professional insult and a questioning of my integrity which i will not tolerate. For the first time in 22 years i am placing the interests of the University second to those of my family and he charged that the regents have had preliminary re sults of the developmental studies investigation for almost two weeks but he was not Given the Courtesy of an interview or an Opportunity to present his Side of the Issue. He said he has had no communication from any of the regents regarding matters disclosed in the report.
