European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 22, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday March 22, 1986 the stars and stripes Ann Landers Page 11 letter Siv old o dear Ann Landers i need your Clear headed Ness. This is the situation my 18 year old stepdaughter with her father s permission installed a Yale Type lock on her bedroom door. I maintain that i have the right to go into any room in the House but not look to in my stepdaughter s Dresser drawers or the desk where she keeps her personal papers. I admit i have done this at times this child and her older sibling have lived with us for 14 years since her Mother died. She does t smoke or use drugs but i think she drinks a Little. The girl has a part time Job and gives her father 20 percent of her paycheck for room and Board. She has a few thousand dollars from her Mother s estate and is responsible for her own car. I am Well aware of the larger problems this letter reveals poor communications and a Lack of Trust and openness. Would you believe my husband and i Are both psychotherapists i am angrier with my husband than with the girl because he gave her permission to install the lock. Please Tell me How this situation looks through unbiased eyes. Somewhere in Indiana dear somewhere your stepdaughter was justified in put Ting a lock on her door since by your own admission you snooped in her room. If she were 13 and you suspected she was using drugs it would be a different matter but an 18-year-old who pays room and Board de serves privacy. If it takes a lock to get it so be it. I suggest joint counselling for you and your stepdaughter. That s where the trouble lies. The conflict Between you two is poisoning your marriage. Dear Ann Landers i am a widow 78 years old. In order to keep my Bills paid i take in College Stu dents. I have had 21. Young men in my Home in the last several years and never had any trouble with any of them until i rented a room to his quarters looked like a Pigpen. He broke the bed and left it with the nails sticking out of the headboard. He always left the lights on and sometime the water in his sink was left running. He sneaked out with his belongings in the dead of night leaving a $62 Telephone Bill and owing me $135 in rent. Recently i Learned George has rented a room from a woman who lives on the other Side of town. I am not a vindictive person but i hate being cheated out of what is rightfully mine. George works part time As a Security guard so it is not As if he does t have any Money coming in. What do you say Ann perplexed in Illinois dear a i say if that spark has t ignited by the time you read this in the papers i Hope you will Contact George and Tell him that if on his next payday he does t hand Over the first instalment against his debt you will take him to Small claims court. If he does t come through Don t hesitate to make Good your threat. Dear readers that nostalgic essay wet Oatmeal kisses was sent with a request to run author apparently the Only two people in the . Who did t know the author were the sender and me. I am being blitzed with letters saying it s Erma Bombeck you my apologies to a Fine writer and a dear Friend. Lack of sponsor complicates family s move to Europe my husband is a specialist four in the . Army. He is very proud of his service. But when it comes to us his family dependents As you Call us he is almost helpless when he has to wait for the government to meet our needs. We received orders for Germany july 29, 1985, with no pinpoint assignment. We went through All procedures at the overseas briefing. We were Given the Choice to apply for concurrent or deferred travel. Naturally we wanted to be together. We applied for concurrent travel with the impression we would be in housing within 60 Days after arrival. On oct. 16, 1985, we received orders with concurrent travel. We were very Happy we would not have to be apart. Our port Call was . 13, 1985. We arrived in Ger Many on . 14 and no one knew we were coming but his commander who failed to let anyone else know. We did t get a sponsor which would have solved our problems by letting us know what to expect. When we arrived at 21st replacement we sat there for seven hours before anyone from his new company was reached. Finally the clerk was Able to reach the first ser Geant of v corps who picked us up and took us to his Home and made room for my husband myself and our three children. For three Days these Good people housed and fed us he was heaven sent because the government sure did t Send him. After three Days we managed to get a room at the Holiday inn hotel at $65 a Day. The least expensive meal was $6, which was a hamburger and Fries. We were having our meals on signature Only but after four Days the hotel said we could no longer charge our meals that our Bill was too High. What next will they throw us out then to top it off my husband was told we could not get family housing until we lived on the Economy for one year. So far the cheapest we be found was $600 a month plus utilities with a Deposit of two months rent plus the first month s rent to move in. Now i Don t believe my husband would have brought us Here knowing this would happen. We re All depressed because we feel unwanted and that the government really does t care about the family Mem Bers. Here we Are Over 10,000 Miles from Home the children need to be in school i am qualified to work also i am a reservist but i can t do anything without a place Tolive. What can we do we Are really Desper ate and need help. We Don t want hand outs just a place to live and Call Home while we re away from Home. Why must this be Linda f. Baldwin Frankfurt editor s note it. Col. Michael a. Ellicott director engineering and hous ing Frankfurt military Community replies your letter Points out a problem common to All Community housing officers through out Germany getting the information to the Soldier and his family in the Continental . Quickly enough to make an informed decision on family member travel. During the past year the Frankfurt Mili tary Community has devoted a significant Effort to improving the Opportunity for family travel to Germany. By emphasizing concurrent travel to Economy quarters the Community has increased from 38 percent concurrent family travel to nearly 80 per cent concurrent travel. Beginning in february of 1985, our monthly report of housing availability was revised to provide information on Economy housing availability and Cost and to notify incoming families of the requirement for a minimum one year lease. This information is transmitted to the Soldier by a 1st per com letter. Unfortunately this information does not reach every family in time. The key person in providing the information to the Soldier and his family is the unit sponsor. The information we provide in our monthly report is available to All unit Spon sors. Although it will not help you now per haps other soldiers serving As sponsors for incoming families can remember the prob lems they encountered in coming to Ger Many and will make an extra Effort to provide Complete family travel information to families they sponsor. A unit sponsor in your Case could have provided you with the Correct housing information including the fact that your concur rent travel was to Economy quarters could Bave made reservations for you at our guest House and could have arranged for you to see several apartments when you arrived. Without knowing the specifics of your Case i can Only say that the Price you stick with fuel standards he says if you be been following the news you know that Ford and general motors Are lobbying for the Federal government to Roll Back fuel Economy standards for 1987 and1988. Their previous efforts were successful in having the 1986 standards reduced and now it appears that the National Highway traffic safety administration will support them again. Why these corporate giants Are crying to Washington that they can t meet a fuel efficiency of 27.5 mpg and still hold off foreign challengers. Do you remember when the words made in America were synonymous with Standard for the world when people wanted to own american products when was the last time you saw a German driving his american made car it s not that the germans Are against imports there Are plenty of imports to be seen along the Auto Bahns French italian and certainly japanese. On the other hand Oil is plentiful now and prices Are coming Down so what s the harm in loosening the fuel standards the harm is that we re headed Back to the conditions of 1974, when we were fat dumb and Happy gluttonous by dependent on imported Oil from our car buyers in the states and worldwide have demonstrated their support for cars that Are reliable and fuel efficient. We could let Detroit hide behind the skirts of Washington but maybe it s time we de Mand that Detroit go head to head with the Competition.
