She wrote songs lived with a Rock Star tried to become an actress and avoided political issues. All that s changed. Meet the new Patti Davis author of a thinly disguised autobiography that May set Teeth on Edge at the White House. Called Home front the Book May Well be the first Bac stairs roman a Clef by a presidential offspring. Patti Davis has turned her Back on Hollywood. She s stopped struggling to crack the movie business has settled into a Happy marriage and has undergone psychoanalysis. Plus she no longer cares if people recognize her As a Reagan. I Don t know if it was a conscious decision or a gradual acceptance of this As part of my life she said. I told myself you re not going to get away from this so you might As Well accept or Deal with it and try to do something with it. I realized these things that happened to me were interesting Davis said and i thought maybe i can take them and make something creative and entertaining out of her Book written with the help of novelist Maureen strange Foster is the Story of Beth Canfield whose up photo Patti Davis now a rfcs behind the scenes with the causes she supports. Father a radio and to Pitchman becomes governor of California then president of the United states. The Interior monologue chronicles Beth s resentment of politics and her parents efforts to Cope with her 1960s style rebellion which is manifested by sexual experimentation a Brush with drugs and involvement in the anti Vietnam War movement. Some of this Davis said was invented. For instance she was too Young to be involved in Vietnam protests in College but researched the Issue for her novel. I Don t think this Book is any More autobiographical than any other first novel she said. You draw on what you know. But what i know is a Little More conspicuous than what other people know. I see nothing they her parents would t like in it she said. I think it s a very honest portrayal of a family in the late 60s and Early 70s. Except for their visibility they re not very different from other families at that at the heart of the Book is Davis fear and loathing of politics which swallowed up her father and their family life. In a poignant passage she recalls her the Reagan family at thanksgiving 1985. Davis is second from left with husband Paul Crilley. Up photo father addressing an Assembly at her elementary school. I remember being proud of him and at the same time frightened she writes. Whatever it was that made him so special was the reason i d never be Able to keep him All to while other teen agers might have loved the limelight she writes of scrunching Down in the Back seat of a limousine so no one would see her or Riding up front hoping she would be mistaken for the chauffeur s daughter. Of her father s inauguration As governor she writes it seemed like a scene i d wandered into by mistake. I Felt like the Why did she hate it All so much it started coming into our lives at a very Young age Davis said. I was always looked at As somebody s daughter before i even knew who i was. I was looked at As an appendage. I think kids like to Start out with a clean slate. But for As Long As i can remember people had preconceptions of she tried to go her own Way in the 1970s. She wrote songs and spent four years As the live in Girlfriend of eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon. She became an actress but won Only a few minor parts in productions that sought to capitalize on her family ties i she spoke out for the anti nuclear movement and when asked said she was pro Choice on abortion diametrically opposed to her father s views. These two positions remain unchanged although she says she now chooses to work behind the scenes for the anti nuclear movement because her Public presence distracts from the Issue. Reporters would always wind up asking me have you talked to your parents about this it would get Down to the gossipy level and they would lose sight that we were talking about the end of the two events appear to have turned her life around she underwent psychoanalysis and she married Paul Grilley a yoga instructor who encouraged her to write. I had some analysis she said. It was wonderful and i wish i could have done it much earlier like at age four. In a lot of ways it helped me write this although she had composed poetry and songs she said the novel was an unexpectedly rewarding experience that prompted her decision to give up acting. I got a Little spoiled. I got a lot of creative satisfaction. Every Day there was something to get excited about a line or a paragraph. That s really rare to get in acting unless you re a meryl Streep who gets great roles All the time she said. Only a Good script with a Juicy role could lure her Back to acting Davis says and that role just might be one she knows quite Well. If this Book gets made into a to movie i la certainly take the part of Beth she said because it s the Best part that s Ever come my Way. Why give it to somebody else
