European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 25, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday March 25, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 23 Brown gets his Day against Kentucky Kentucky always brought out the underdog in Dale Brown starting with the history of five National championships in Lexington moving onto the missiles launched from the seats at Rupp Arena and including the physical pounding Kentucky administered to Loui Siana state University out on the court. Brown masked it Well last week even with the Mem Ory of three losses to Kentucky this season. He made All the proper statements about Kentucky but none of it could make him forget the coins and the insults and the losses cascading Down on his head Over the years. Brown had his Chance saturday in the final of the Southeast regional on a Neutral court in Atlanta and with a sense of what he called his leu team playing Kentucky one More time for a berth in the final four came through with a 59-57 upset Victory. Eddie Sutton with his own Perm curls and his open Mustache policy for his players was the new coach this year replacing Joe b. Hall who retired exactly a year ago. The two coaches had plenty in common. Both had been touched by Hurricane Tito Hor Ford that whirl wind of a basketball player who blasted from the dominican Republic to the University of Houston made a pass at Lexington touched Down briefly in Baton Rouge roared North for some consultations in Washington before swooping Down with full Force and registering at the University of Miami last fall. Sutton in his first months As coach at Ken Tucky had been warned not to even speak to Hor Ford lest Kentucky be penalized. Brown later had him at preseason workouts before Hor Ford flew off again. But leu and Kentucky have More than Hor Ford in common. Both schools have been suspected of bending the rules of the National collegiate athletic association and investigators from the Home office in Kansas have no doubt earned Many frequent traveler Miles on missions to Baton Rouge and Lexington. Leu and Kentucky Are members of the Southeastern conference which Means they see each other twice during the regular season and As happened this month once in the conference tournament. Leu lost All three times 54-52, 68-57 and 61-58, and Brown was not amused. He has always identified Kentucky with the forces that own and Rule the world. He grew up fatherless and poor in North Dakota and when he became a Success Ful basketball coach his resentments did not fade. Brown has been at leu his Only head coaching Job for 14 seasons winning 257 games and losing 151. He saw Joe b. Hall never recognized As a master Strate Gist even by Kentucky fans or maybe it was particularly by Kentucky fans win his first Mcaa title in 1978. That put Hall Only three behind the late Baro Adolph Rupp. Brown was not amused by the 1978 championship either because he Felt the Rick Robey Mike Phillips wrestling bears had committed a few too Many Ham Merlock and flying wedges against his team. His charges against Kentucky did not exactly Cut Down the barrage of ice and coins the next time the tigers visited Lexington. Brown is a strange Man a coach whose moods swing As rapidly As a Grandfather clock on six cups of Black Coffee. He is known for his generosity about As much As he is known for his resentments but it was the Good Dale Brown who surfaced in atlant Athis week. As three conference foes Alabama Kentucky and leu met with Georgia tech to Send one team to dal Las Brown even praised the Fellows in Blue uniforms saying Kentucky had always set the Standard for All other teams. Kentucky is the one thing that remained constant he added not expanding on Kentucky s qualities that were Brown has had other feuds to worry about. His relationship with the Mcaa got so bad that there were suggestions the athletic director Bob Brodhead was wire tapping his own office apparently in an attempt to find out How the Mcaa always seemed to know so much. When Hor Ford resumed his wanderings last fall out siders might have assumed that leu was out of the playoff business for this season but there was More where he came from. The same is also True at Kentucky one of the prime programs in the country. Any school can have a team but Only a chosen few can have when Joe b. Packed it in last Spring allowing him self to Wear Brown suits again he avoided the Baron s trademark As Long As he was coach Kentucky seemed interested in Lute Olsen the coach at Arizona. But after a visit to Lexington Olsen declared he was not a candidate. Tucson is unique in giving you privacy he said. That s not to say that when we go out that people Don t recognize us. But i be yet to have a Fork full of food Halfway into my Mouth then be dragged away to meet someone s kid or great Sutton who took the Job later said Well Basket Ball Here is a second religion. Sometimes you feel like a state Park where everybody owns a piece of he got that Point after he took a few weeks to establish a residence in the Bluegrass and kentuckians wondered what his problem was. Then he apparently had a Brief conversation with the new Jersey nets about their vacant Job which mystified kentuckians from Greasy Creek to Sassafras Ridge. New Jersey versus Kentucky but Sutton eventually settled in and everything was forgotten in face of a common enemy the Lexington Herald Leader a newspaper that dared to print interviews with 33 for Mer players Many of whom told of recruiting and financial excesses. While us fans threatened to Boycott the newspaper the Mcaa began deploying forces from Baton Rouge to Lexington like some civil War general trying to fight on two fronts at the same time. Saturday the two schools were in the same town at the same time and the Gumshoe from the Mcaa did t even have to change planes to keep an Eye on both of them.
