First place was Worth $50,000. The 18-year-old Becker needed a tiebreaker to win the first set and then broke Lindl s service in the seventh game of the second set to Zero in on his first indoor tournament title. It was Becker s first Victory Over Lendl after four straight losses As he ended the Czechoslovakia s winning Streak at 29 straight matches. I came close before and i said to myself that one of these Days i have to beat him and 1 finally did it today said Becker. Other times i came very close to beating him especially in London and again in the masters. But each time he just overpowered  Lendl 26, complained that he has been bothered because of a tender knee in which he believes he has a Chip. It has been giving me trouble and i be had to play with my upper body i be had it for three or four weeks but i aggravated it yesterday said Lendl. Lendl s defeat in the first set was the first Lime he had lost a set in 14 matches. Lendl won the toss but elected to receive probably hoping to build an Early psychological advantage. He had broken his opponents service in the first or second game throughout the tournament. But it was Becker who broke Lendl s service in the eighth game. Lendl came right Back to break Becker and the two went on to 6-6 and a tiebreaker. Lendl took a 3-1 Lead in the tie breaker before Becker took the next five Points for a 6-3 Lead. Lendl won the next two Points including one on the first Ace of the match but Becker took the next Point and the set. Mahaffey captures pc title by Bob Green Ponte Vedra Fla. A John Mahaffey s first words after winning the tournament players championship were for distraught Larry Mize. I know exactly How Larry feels right now. Mahaffey missed his Long Birdie attempt and then Mize missed a Short putt for Par and stalked away muttering to himself his head Down. Mahaffey s putt went into the Hole for Par and it was Over. Douglass wins Johnny Mathis seniors title los Angeles a Dale Douglass fired a 6-under-Par 66 sunday for a 54-Hole total of 202 and a three shot Victory Over Chi Chi Rodriguez in the $250,000 Johnny Mathis seniors Golf tournament. Douglass who became eligible for the seniors tour when he turned 50 on March 8, has won two of the three seniors events in which he has competed and finished Sec Ond in the other one. It might have looked easy but i was worried the whole Day Douglass said after turning Back a Challenge from Rodriguez at the Mountain Gate country club. Douglass finished at 14-under Par and earned $37,500, making him the leading Money Winner on the seniors tour with $96,000, More than he Ever earned in one year during his 23 years on the regular pea tour. The seniors tour is certainly great for me he said after winning for the second straight week. When i joined it i knew 1 was capable of winning but this is far beyond my wildest  Rodriguez also shot a closing round 66 and finished the Day exactly where he started three strokes behind Douglass. Rodriguez who collected $22,500 for Sec Ond place said he did exactly what he wanted to do. I told my wife that if i shot a 66, it might be enough said the 50-year-old puerto rican who joined the tour last fall. Dale has been hot lately but i thought he was due for at least one round in the 70 s. But it was t to be today. I applied some pressure but he handled it Well. It must be  Bruce Crampton playing in the final group with Douglass and Rodriguez closed with a 69 and was alone in third place at 207. He earned $18,750. Defending Champion Peter Thomson made a run at Douglass and was within two strokes of him at one Point. But his 67 left him at 208, Good for fourth place and$15,625. Douglass opened with three birdies on the first five holes and by the time he reached the ninth Hole he had stretched his Lead to four strokes
