Powell is the chief of veterinary services for the Eastern Mediterranean Branch which brings him into frequent Contact with dogs and cats. The problem is he s allergic to most animals. I sneeze a lot when i work Powell said. If i Don t take my antihistamines it s besides his medication Powell uses a Small air purifier to Clear the air. The roughest time is when he s prepping a dog for an operation and must Cut the Ani Mal s hair. Powell Learned about his allergy about a year after completing veterinary school at the University of Georgia. His symptoms started when he packed his dogs in his car and drove from Pensacola Nas fla., to visit his family in Georgia. It was showed he was allergic to most animals although not to horses cows or his pet Boa Constrictor. Powell said it s not too unusual for a veterinarian to develop an allergy to his patients. Some surgeons he said Are allergic to the powder in their surgical gloves. But the discovery of his allergy has not stopped him from continuing his veterinary work. I never wanted to do anything else in my life Powell said. I like my work too based at the air Force installation near Athens Powell is responsible for animal care at 15 Sites in Greece and sees 10 to 25 animals a Day. Some patients Are turtles hamsters and Birds. But not All of his work is caring for pets. He also is responsible for sanitation and food inspections. His work takes him to dairies and slaughterhouses in is Rael a Dairy in Bahrain and a bakery in Oman.
