To direct the course of. 2. To guide. 3. To show the Way. 4. To direct by influence. When you pin on the rank of an officer be it commissioned warrant or noncommissioned you immediately assume the responsibility to place into action either in a positive or negative manner the word Lead regardless of the shape or form it May take. There is absolutely no Way you can avoid this unless you plan to spend your career in a location where you Are Able to avoid All Contact with your fellow human beings. Whether you have one or one Hundred subordinates working for you will make a difference Only in the magnitude of the effect your Lead will take on others. But you will Lead. Someone an infantry private a is 3 civilian clerk a Laboratory specialist or a new squad Leader will be either positively or negatively affected because that individual came in Contact with you. You will direct the course of someone s actions. You will guide subordinates either directly or indirectly in the performance of their assigned duties. You will show them the Way to Lead. You will in fluence their daily Job performances and thus their careers perhaps even change the course of their lives. You will Lead. If you agree with the above that you do indeed Lead by virtue of the fact that you the St ars Anda tripes us Are an officer no matter what your Posi Tion no matter the number of your subordinates then the. Decision to be made is not whether you will be a Leader but rather what Type of Leader you will be. Will you have a positive or negative effect on those around you will you at tempt to improve your immediate Environ ment and thus the environment of those around you through positive change or will you accept the status quo because any change May upset your future rating will you through your everyday activities demonstrate your True care and concern for the careers and Well being of those who work with you or will you demonstrate con Cern Only for your own career there Are those in our midst who set their goals to be outstanding evaluation reports career progression and promotion. I contend that these Are results rather than goals. The goals which obtain these results May be stated in three terms o the accomplishment of your As signed Mission your Job in the Best Man Ner possible ensuring the Well being of those who fall within your immediate realm of influence and responsibility and setting the example. Those who Lead by the above principles will find it impossible to halt the resultant changes and improvements in the sys it May or May not be evident during their career but it will surely occur. Why because the same person you direct guide show and influence today will be the Leader of the future. Change and improvement is your responsibility. Capt. Russell k. I guess i am used to How it is in the states where local ordinances Are obeyed. While trying to eat lunch the other Day i counted More than 50 percent of the tables in the no smoking area which had smokers sitting at them. I started to say something but it would have been difficult to talk to 20 people and still finish my lunch. I would like to say this to the people yes it was crowded and there were very few if any tables available. But if a table was that important surely you could Stop smoking while sitting there. Smoking in the Exchange is not permitted and you Are Able to shop. If All the smoking tables Are full then just imagine you Are in the Exchange and do not smoke. Or a More serious note Are there any penalties for someone smoking in the no smoking area who enforces the no smok ing policy what can be done to protect the health of those who do not smoke name withheld Kaiserslautern editor s note master sgt. Bruce e. Zielsdorf customer relations specialist Public affairs office he cafes Europe replies the Only rules that should have to apply Are common sense and Courtesy. Certainly feel hanging no smoking mobiles plastering no smoking stickers on the Napkin dispensers and removing ashtrays might give people the hint. Enough said on policy and enforcement. The Vogel Weh cafeteria has very limited seating with 8-10 tables assigned for non smokers. A renovation is planned to include additional seating and it is hoped this will alleviate some of the problem. What can you expect in the future a recent change to department of defense directives will increase no smoking areas to 40-50 percent of the seating capacity where appropriate. The word has gone out to cafes Europe general managers to expand no smoking areas wherever it is feasible.
