European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 16, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday april 16, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers i feel a need to sound off and i have never seen this prob Lem addressed in your column. Recently i moved to a Small town. Al most immediately people started com ing by to invite me to their Church. The conversation goes something like this we Are from. Church and would like to invite you to attend our thank you for the invitation but i am not a member of your do you go to Church do you know the lord or some variation. then they proceed to Tell me if i really know the lord i would attend Church do things their Way and believe what they be Lieve. Am i wrong to feel that my privacy is being invaded and that i am being pressured when the same people from the same Church pay More than one Call i know Jesus exhorted his followers to go out and preach the gospel but he also said i know mine and mine know he never attempted to Force his teachings on others. I am sure these townspeople Are sincere and i Don t want to be rude but i wonder what their response would be if someone came to their door and urged them to visit their synagogue or attend a Catholic mass or visit the unitarian Church or a christan science service. Thanks for being a sounding Board. Badgered in Texas dear badgered although the synagogue is my place of worship i have attended services of every Faith you have named plus others. Being pressured to join however is an other matter. I do not blame you for being resentful. An invitation to attend a service is one thing but your visitors have exceeded the limits of Good taste. Dear Ann Landers last year i started to raise Long Island reds. They Are healthy and Beautiful hens fun to be around More like pets than creatures of a farm Community. I get about a dozen eggs a Day from 15 hens. Needless to say i m up to my wazoo in eggs. I be scrambled Fried shuffled Omelette souped boiled and poached pm. I be also sold some to the local grocer. I love boiled eggs in my salad but i can t seem to get the shells off without Chipping away part of the egg. It makes me mad that others Are Able to bring hard boiled eggs to picnics shelled beautifully without a Nick. Mine look As if the cat got into the picnic Basket. I m ashamed to be asking this ques Tion. Friends and family consider me an excellent Cook. What s the secret Ann your half haul Reader in new Orleans dear new Orleans i Haven t done much in the Kitchen lately but i do know How to get the Shell off a hard boiled egg. Boil the egg for 5 minutes. Tap the Shell lightly and Peel under cold running water. You should get perfect re sults. Concerns for privacy in mental health treatment answered your articles on suicide in the military raises a question. The sponsor or military member is responsible for All actions of his or her dependents especially overseas. Their actions greatly reflect on his or her military career. Therefore if a dependent has problems and wishes to seek assistance through one of the mental health experts it could ruin a military career. Therefore Many people with problems will not seek help because of the greater fear of destroying their spouse s career. A Small problem will go unaided and grow into a greater problem in time due to this fear. This leads to the famous words i do not need help i can handle it myself the great cover of problems the false Public image of military families All to protect the secure world of a military career and benefits we so greatly need in the world today. The privacy act does not protect the military dependent As it should. Many of the smaller Sites throughout Europe do not have the services available and can not get information on Many services that could help people Cope with their prob lems. Legal assistance personal affairs Brief Ings and interesting speakers where a per son can ask questions and seek help in an indirect Way Are not available at the Small Sites most Likely due to the Cost to hold them in Small areas. Is this Cost really too High if it could save a life i repeat the fear of private problems being made Public and reflecting on their spouses careers is very great in the Mili tary. Name and location withheld editor s note or. Col Robert j. Sokol neuropsychiatry consultant 7thmedical come replies i am responding to that portion of the writer s letter that suggests that Contact with mental health experts either by sol Diers or their spouses can adversely affect their career. Unfortunately i have heard this Rumor Many times and it is a misconception that is widely held. As a matter of fact in my entire career i have never seen i occur. While it is True that technically there is no confidentiality in the military system with the exception of chaplain the facts Are that outpatient mental health records Are invariably kept separately and retained in the mental health facility. If an individual is hospitalized the sum Mary of the hospitalization record does go into the medical record but i can cite a number of people whom i know personally who have had inpatient hospitalization either for primarily psychiatric problems or for alcohol problems who have subsequently received promotions. This is True for officer and enlisted ranks. On relatively rare occasions when Cid is investigating a specific crime at the Hospi Tal commander s request a psychiatrist Boot does t hold its Tongue. Please Don t Stop Reading this until you be completed it i m writing this because lately you be neglected me. Look. I be carried you a Long Way More than you be carried me. I be helped you through some rough parts of the serv ice. I helped you climb the ladder to where you Are today and i was with you every step of the Way. The Only time you recognize me is when it benefits you or when you re ordered to then you Only recognize me so you Don get in hot water. Sure we be had our and Downs but i feel i deserve More recognition. I m tired of always being pushed and tossed around stepped on and abused. After you re done with dinner tonight could i get a couple Coats of polish an maybe some new laces your boots an idea for discarded magazines remember the last time you were in the dental clinic waiting room and the Only Magazine to be found was a two year old Issue of dental Hygiene today since we now have free mailing privileges through the Apo up to 8 of. Map Why not share those discarded mag Azine issues from Home Don t throw them away mail them to your local clinic dental clinic Hospital finance office Barber Beauty shop Sato scheduled airlines ticket office Etc. Name withheld Ramstein a Germany Money does t always buy Best i would like to address this to a letter writer who recently had his responses to other people s opinions printed. I would like to address the first letter by saying that in my opinion Money does not always buy the Best. High priced judges lawyers doctors politicians Etc. Does not mean that they Are the Best in their specialized Fields or that they have earned their Money in the most honest moral or humane ways. Some of them were born into the Money and the profession. It does t always mean they know what their doing. A lot of them May have bought their Way in. Then there s the High priced ones that Are Alco Holics drug addicts sexual abusers murderers tax evaders and the list goes on Andon thanks but if i can find a Good doctor who knows what he s doing cares about his patients More than his Golf and does t charge two arms and legs for five minutes of his time then i think i la stick with him or her. Quantity does t always mean Quality. Now for the second letter again you managed to make Money a prerequisite for Success or failure. Our country according to my history Les sons was not built by Rich businessmen or lawyers or judges or politicians but by the honest hard working people who Laboured to build it and they certainly did t All make a lot of Money for doing it. Our Money problems have a lot deeper roots than giving handouts to poor people and cutting out funds to them and other worthwhile programs is not going to solve the problems. As for making businessmen scapegoats if the people Don t have the Money to buy their products or if we go Back to our old ways of doing it All ourselves we would t have to worry about what they re getting since they d have no business to make or lose Money on. Sharon l. Swift Raf Woodbridge England pen pals please include my name in your penal column. I am a 32-year-old filipino and would like to Corre Spond with other people from other countries. I a Jiroy weight training martial arts and photography. Tito d. Magno sic Basil nos . Box 880 Dhahran Airport 31932 kingdom of saudi Arabia May review the record for issues related to that specific crime but that is the Only circumstance in which i have Ever seen information released. What i have described relates to situations where the individual has sought help for themselves. On occasions a commander will request a psychiatric evaluation and in that Case a report is forwarded to the commander. On other occasions when an individual has sought help voluntarily a situation May arise where he needs assistance with the unit. In that Case the mental health worker May Contact appropriate people within the unit invariably having received permission from the patient to do this. I want to thank the writer for the Opportunity of correcting this very common mis perception a misperception that unfortunately prevents Many people from seeking the assistance which is available. All of the mental health workers that i have encountered in my career Are at least equally As concerned about these issues As Are their clients. Let me repeat once More for emphasis that i have never seen or experienced a situation where an individual voluntarily sought assistance from a mental health worker and this in any Way interfered with his career progression. As a matter of fact most often when the individual s problems Are worked out it actually assists career progression. The european edition capt Dale k. Patterson us editor in chief cmdr Jeffrey s.
