My hobbies Are music Rugby travelling and readers remark on cigarette sales in commissary recently i read an article in army times. It was about the consideration of the Pentagon to halt sales on cigarettes in commissaries. It stated Congress ordered a Survey last year that concluded that 45 percent of the military smokes. That figure showed a de Cline from 55 percent found in a Survey in1982. Military medical treatment was mentioned to be at least $85 million which i assumed was a statistic from poor health due to cigarette smoking. Possibly the absence of Low Cost cigarettes being such a convenience would be determining Factor for some to quit. I would be More than Happy to pay the extra one to two percent raise to the current amount of 5 percent surcharge to make up for commissary loss in sales. My husband is one of the 45 percent. It would be great to see those figures drop. Non smoking wife ludwigs Burg Germany i am writing to comment on two recent articles. Five articles were featured on the front Page but the article of least importance got the headline Reagan aides split by decision to still sell discount at the Bottom of the Page panel approves changes in military retirement now in my lowly opinion the latter Arti Cle was of much greater significance than the former but it is not my desire to com Plain about the importance your editor place upon such newsworthy items. Rather i wish to comment upon the substance of the articles themselves. Secretary of defense Caspar Weinberger has decided that the practice of discount cigarettes to the military should continue. Associations of present and former military personnel apparently supported this Deci Sion illogically fearing that the. End of this Benefit would Lead to the cancellation of other discounts. Furthermore or. Wein Berger simultaneously ordered the military to begin a Campaign to discourage smoking. Now i ask what kind of system Are we actually promoting Here the evils and problems associated with smoking Are Well documented. The military encourages phys he comments on on going sales in response to the writer who addressed commissary practices in a recent Issue of the stars and stripes please allow me to offer an opinion before that writer s departure from Germany. Bless your government for allowing you to have sales that go on for months. No deceptive advertisements Are used to lure you into the commissary. Yes we changed the signs. Today they read Patron appreciation you complain that those Beans have been on Sale for months but did you see the other 500 items that we drastically reduced that were not on Sale in the last six months during this Sale you saw the Sale sign on the Candy and snacks but you did not think it was such a bargain As compare to the other 500 items so Jimmy did not get any cookies. Two weeks from today we Are going to take the Patron appreciation sign Down put up regular Sale signs and we Are going to give Jimmy and Sarah our Young americans a real winding we Are going to drop the Price on the Candy and cookies even further to show appreciation for our Young americans and you buy. Stop it is still on Sale but did you notice that it is even cheaper your Gripe that during inspections or when High ranking dignitaries Are due the commissary looks the Best and Well stocked. Let me ask you this if the presi Dent of the United states was coming to visit you would you Cut your Lawn clean your closet and borrow your neighbor s meeting people. I m sure that your listing came from some other news paper i have never in 13 years in Ger Many seen that sort of comprehensive list Occidental Petroleum it Al in anything but the Wall Street journal or the inter National Herald Tribune. I suggest that you drop that advertisement or at least show your daily list if you have enough nerve instead of you Competition s list. Name withheld Heidelberg the and unfortunately showed a list run by the Pacific edition of the stars and stripes. The european edition carries nor Mally a recommended list of about 125 of the most traded stocks. De. Ical fitness constantly As we All know. What s More Low prices always increase demand which is obvious in the Case of discount cigarettes. In any Case i am opposed myself to discount cigarettes and alcohol for health reasons and because 1 believe the military could use the additional Revenue. In the Gramm Rudman Era. Well All have to Cut Corners somewhere. The Mili tary might As Well plan ahead and raise the prices on these non essentials to offset imminent Price increases on the real necessities of life such As food and retire ment benefits. Which brings me to my final Point if the Price on cigarettes was increased to at least Market level then maybe smoking would be really discouraged and military retirees would be healthier. They could then pursue second careers without worry ing about a slight decrease in military pay. Health care benefits would Cost less also for Active duty and retirees. In the alternative increased Revenue from Benefit vices could be used to off set the congressionally mandated reduction in retirement pay. Or perhaps other items in the commissary could be reduced which we All could appreciate. In conclusion 1 must agree with the surgeon general or. Everett Koop. How could the removal of cigarettes be viewed As a reduction of benefits when the Only benefits would be a lifetime of illness and Early death capt. Donna l.
