John Thomaj the manager of Nasa s solid fuel rocket motor redesign team said thai although the work is a few Days behind schedule he still expects new rocket engines to be ready in time for inc scheduled resumption of shuttle flights in february i98s. A series of tests already performed said Thomas has proven that engineers understand Why a rocket engine failed Jan. 28 and caused challenger to explode. Four tests Are planned in a program that culminates with the firing of a qualification motor by october 1987. If that final lest is successful said Thomas then space shuttle flights could resume As planned Thomas said Nasa is studying a recommendation from inc National research Council that two More test firings be conducted.
