European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - December 27, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday december 27, 1985 the stars and stripes . Mayor s dig of deep South boomerangs Jackson miss. A five mayors in Mississippi arc angered by a nationally televised slur Edward i. Koch made about the South and one of them reportedly used an ethnic slur to describe new York City s mayor Koch s taped comments broadcast tuesday on Abc referred to the death of a 23-year-old Black Man who was run Over by a car after being beaten by a gang of while youths m new York City. I d expect this kind of thing to happen in the deep South Koch said according to a network spokesman. Brookhaven mayor . Godbold wrote Koch a letter protesting the statement. He later referred to Koch As a jew Bastard according to newspaper report published Here wednesday. I believe that jews like him who get in this office Don t know the hell what they Are talking about the Clarion Ledger quoted Godbold As saying. La opens up the wounds when he persists that inc South has problems like this especially when he has murders up there every minute and he compares new York to Mississippi he said. The trouble we had in the 50s would t have happened unless people like him came Down Here and stirred things Lee Llambelis Koch s assistant press Secre tary said there would be no response to god bold s comments. We re not going to stoop Down to his level Llambelis said. We won t gel into that Type of ignorant name calling. It s More crucial that we resolve our problem Here and get it behind Godbold was among four mayors who responded to Koch s remarks by inviting him to Mississippi to Sec the state s approach to racial problems. The others were Dale Danks of Jack son James m. Trotter of Columbus and Wil Liam c. Burnley of Greenville. "1 would say that he does t understand what the South is All about Trotter said. He needs to come Down Here and understand there is a Good relation Between Blacks and Llambelis said Koch s statement was part of a comparison Between the Black victim s ordeal and a situation when Koch was involved in a voter registration Case in Mississippi in 1963, Koch and another lawyer were walking to a courthouse when a group of White Farmers sur rounded them and started clapping Llambelis said. The two were intimidated and ran the rest of the Way to the courthouse she said. Similarly Michael Griffith 23, was chased by a group at whiles in the Queens Borough and Koch could understand the Black Man s fear a Miclis said. W a Page 9 Congress plans new Book to help set history straight Washington not history buffs in need of information about any of the 11,700 people who have served in Congress turn to the Best available resource the latest volume of the biographical directory of the american Congress. But the Best scholars say is far from Good enough. The current volume last updated in 1971, is riddled with misinformation. Key Dales for Many entries Are wrong or missing. Party labels Are incorrect. Crucial political information is lacking and mythology is presented As fact. For example the volume credits several Congress men with having been the one who caught John Quincy Adams when he collapsed of a stroke on the House floor in 1848 researchers have been unable 10 confirm that anyone caught the former president when he fell. For the first Lime the biographical directory is being revised by professional historians. The huge project now Aboul at the Midway Point is due or publication in Lime for the Bicentennial of con Gress March a 1989, and is expected to set a new Standard for congressional history. Staff members of the Senate historical office and the House Bicentennial office Are scrutinizing every entry drawing on recent research by slate historians and by scholars around the United states. Among the newly available resources Are maps compiled by Kenneth c. Marlis a political geographer Al Wesl Virginia University showing the District boundaries and political parties for All 30,864 congressional elections held since 1789. The Slapdash nature of the current biographical directory is a reminder of something that is easy to forget in a Day when the Senate and House Are As close As the nearest television set. For much of ils history Congress has been perceived As a Remote rather irrelevant place not Overly worthy of serious study. Far from being he crowning achievement of a career service in Congress particularly the House was often a Brief chapter in a life thai later look other paths or was otherwise thoroughly obscure. You did t have to be prominent to go to con Gress Bruce a. Ragsdale editor for the House por Tion of the project said diplomatically. Senate careers always have been fairly Well documented. The House historians have by far the most daunting task both because of sheer numbers roughly 10,000 House entries As against 1,700 for the Senate and the relative obscurity of the former representatives. Ragsdale joined Itic project last year after work ing for several years on the George Washington papers at the University of Virginia. Raymond w. Smock director of the House Bicentennial office spent 15 years editing the 14-Vplumc papers of Booker t. Washington at the University of Mary land. Many of the biographical directory s problem Stem from ils own history la began in the 1850i u the private profit making project of one Man Charles Lanman. To avoid offending anyone and therefore to make the Book marketable he tried to give it a non Par i Isan tone by omitting reference to political parties As Well As to details of what the members actually did while in Congress. Thai problem persists. Few entries refer to any legislative achievements. The entry for former rep. Fred a. Hartley of new Jersey for example says nothing about the tall Harlley act the 1947 land Mark legislation on labor management relations. There is no indication that a member was a chair Man of a committee. Ragsdale is remedying that defect relying on a list compiled by Garrison Nel son a political scientist at the University of ver Mont of Alt committee chairmen in the history of the House. The House Bicentennial office is also compiling a guide to the locations of manuscript collodion of former House members which is no easy task since the papers of Henry Clay for example Are in 20 places from Maine to California. The office has identified some 500 manuscript collections not including those in private hands. Congress look Over publication of the directory in 1903. Ten years later the democrats won control of Congress and decided to raise the party s profile by adding the Label Democrat Loas Many entries As possible. Although the democratic party was not generally recognized until the 1830s, a number of the founding fathers including James Madison. Who served As a representative without a party Label in the first Congress suddenly became democrats. The last Overall revision was in 1928. The re search methodology was unusual to say the least Congress instructed postmasters from the areas in which former members had lived to interview the congressmen s descendants or failing that the old est people in town. A number of chatty entries based on family leg ends entered the 1928 volume and still remain. For example the once Bare Bones entry for John Thom As Dunn a lawyer who was a new Jersey Congress Man from 1893 to 189s, now recounts that he ran away to sea Al the age of 11, became engaged As a Bobbin boy in a silk factory and subsequently worked Al Iron molding brass turning Silver burnishing and painting. Both for the Sake of accuracy and in an Effort to standardize the entries information of that sort is being excised from the new volume. Bui thai does not mean thai the new Book will be devoid of inter Esting personal facts. The current entry for Edward Dickinson a representative from Amherst mass., from 1853 to 1855, docs not mention that he was the father of the poet Emily Dickinson. Rags Date is adding that fact. It s essentially his Only claim to tame he said. Pondexter North reportedly doing Little work Washington a it. Col. Oliver l North and vice adm.
