Last weekend was the third week of 1986-87 High school basketball Competition and it has been even longer than thai since prep Pickin s last appeared. So there was a Little catching up thai has to be done. The prime thing was recognizing the players of the week on the basketball scene. Girls honors for the first two weeks go to Munich s Laurie Oliver who started the season off with a 45-Point game against Karlsruhe and came through with 20 in limited a lion inc next night and to Rumburg s Nicole col quit who scored a total of Only 20 Points but grabbed 34 rebounds 22 in one game in the Nuernberg series. Last week Bonn s Mina Babit got the nod for a 38-Point, 30-rebound series against Brus Sels. On the boys from Bamburg s James Higgins is in first week nominee on the strength of his 37-and 23 Point games against Oscr Hulz we Bruecken s Law rence Jackson tallied 76 Points in three games to get the second week recognition and last week s vote goes to Wiesbaden s Larry Stephens who had 29points, 19 rebounds and live blocked shots against Frankfurt us the warriors ran their aaa record to 5-d. Stephens also had 34 Points and 20 rebounds tuesday night but his heroics were in vain in a los ing cause because slut lean ended the Wiesbaden skein and remained undefeated. As usual there was no rest for the weary in the slates. Basketball and wrestling tournaments abounded throughout Florida some schools participating in two tournaments one on the last weekend of school and the other Between Christmas and new year s Day. I Haven t heard of any Dodds basketball teams participating in tournaments but the wrestlers got inc Opportunity to slay in shape and get some tournament experience in the Heidelberg invitational. More than 100 grapplers took part and All reports i got were that it was a highly successful venture. The Bennor conference has initiated a program of honouring its coaches commissioner Loyd Morrow reports. On the Small schools front it s Munich setting the Pace in both divisions with 290 Points. Osterholz trails in the boys race with 280 and Giessen an Karlsruhe Are lied for second with 250 in girls play. When he was Only a Sophomore at Heidelberg High school Deon Cockrell demonstrated excellent football potential earning stars and stripes All Europe recognition both As a running Back and a safety As Well As being named the offensive player of the year. He did t stay around for his Junior and senior years Heidelberg s loss was a  for Cole High school in san Antonio Texas. Cockrell completed his High school activities in mid december when Cote was beaten in the quarterfinals of the Texas class 2-a championships. In the interim Cockrell had led the cougars through two great seasons the1985 team advancing to the quarterfinals of the class 3-a championships.
