European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - May 20, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday May 20,1987 the stars and stripes Page 23 commentary he Burgh altered notre Dame image i dont remember what the football player said id me after the game it was two Yean ago and the topic was the intricacies of defense bul j remember he said it so Well that i left the locker room and returned to the press Box and immediately leafed through the press guide to find out where ibis Guy veal to school the football player is Dave Duerson now a safely for the bears the school is notre Dame. The press Book said he had earned a Bache Lor s degree m economics. To was t the first time that an athlete who could Muster Bis thoughts in reasoned grammatical sentences turned1 out to be a graduate of Noire Dame not just As stated for some athletes but and in a major that bears relevance to the actual world around us a1 the end of this month the Rev Theodore Hes Burgh after 34 years retires As president of notre Dame University by most accounts the 69-year-olde Riest has been instrumental in building notre Dame of a school known for football to one increasingly known for academics and some football. He Burgh has overseen a sports program that Many consider a Rondel one will integrity m recruit ing with graduating ils athletes and with producing competitive though not necessarily undefeated learns. Much has changed. Al a news conference attended primarily by sportswriters shortly after he Burgh took Over he was asked to pose entering a football. He was appalled. I m not the football coach he rasped i m the president Al one of the first meetings of College presidents he attended he Burgh sought out Robert Goheen then the president of Princeton. Our schools Are both about the same size we both have All male students but you have a reputation for scholarship and we d like one said he Burgh. How cart we do it Ai the Story goes Goheen told him. First fire the football Goheen added thai he Burgh should bolster the faculty by making greater de mands on it and he should increase the standards. Ira Berkow for incoming freshmen. I Don t remember that conversation precisely it was a Long Lime ago he Burgh said the other Day by Telephone from South Bend kiel., but ii sounds like Bob if one was to improve both the image and the substance of notre Dame Hen these three elements seemed necessary. The last two were easy to fix com pared to the first. But about a year after he Burgh took Over the football coach he inherited the legendary Frank Leahy stepped Down. Its a Story that s never been told said Hes Burgh. Some people thought i fired Frank and that notre Dame let him go and hat we turned our Back on him. That s not the Way it was. This is what happened when i was the executive vice president of the University from 1947 to 19.52, one of my jobs was to travel with the football team. I remember How Frank punished himself before games. He got so worked up thai he passed out on the Field in a game against Georgia tech he was hyperventilating and could have died. Before a Navy game he was Laid out on a Bench in the locker room and had to be Given a during the season Leahy slept on a cot in the firehouse near the football Field and rarely journeyed the 33 Miles to his Home in Long Beach ind., where he lived with his wife Flo and their 10 Chil Dren. He Burgh believed that Leahy s life was out of balance and that the pressure to win and the Over emphasis to maintain the Noire Dame football tradition was so great thai it might have killed after the 1933 season he Burgh called Leahy into his office. Frank he said this is ridiculous. I think you ought to seriously consider retiring for the Sake of your family and your head in. But it s up Loyous you still have two years la go on your contract and we d pay you the rest of Leahy unsure what to make of this said he d think it Over. Then in a kind of machiavellian Way i got Woof Frank s friends the former Public relations director at notre Dame and the Chicago Tribune sports columnist Arch Ward to talk to him. And one night at dinner with them he called and raid he thought i was right and he d resign. I sweetened the pot by idling Frank thai if his six boys qualified we d give them All full scholarships to Noire he Burgh then hired Terry Bonnan a 25-year-old High school football coach from Chicago who had earned a Law degree. This was the balance he Burgh was looking for. But Brennan was t a Strong coach and he left after five years. In n. Few years he Burgh hired am Parseghian and notre Dame football would be outstanding again. After Parseghian left notre Dame football earns have won somewhat More than they be lost. "1 remember a coach Here Many years ago said he Burgh who yelled at his plovers what do you think this is a game get in there and Light it struck me As crazy. Because it is a he Burgh said that he has wanted Good teams bul Only if kept under one of the rules revisions he put in Early in his regime was that when Grade averages were Given out the athletes grades would be Given out first. The first time this happened we Learned that three of our lop players would be ineligible the next Day for a basketball game against Kentucky he said. I called our athletic director Moose Krausch in told him. He said you know father if you put the grades into the mail i won t get it until monday and those Guys can play tomorrow i said Moose you got the word now.
