Today Erbach s skilled craftsmen use not Only elephant tusks but those from Walrus Narwhal and Hippopotamus. Environmentalists need have no worry. The Ivory purchased by the Erbach Carvers must include a certificate verifying the tusks were obtained legally and not through poaching or the Black Market. The tusks which weigh from 75 to 200 pounds and often Are More than six feet Long Cost from $30 a Pound up. The thickness varies from the solid wide portion at the animal s head to the narrower part the Del far Ehk Caer be. At the hollow painted end. The less expensive hollow pieces Are used to create Small brooches and tiny pieces such As crowns and canes attached to Small statues. The carving process begins with the Tusk being stripped of is Brownish bark with chisels and saws the now White Ivory is polished and smoothed with a variety of tools and the carving Begum. Though the number of local craftsmen hat dropped in Modem times Erbach remains the Center of european Ivory carving and its modern museum opened in 1966, has become a show Bce for examples of this Craft from the world Over. There Are permanent exhibits from Africa India Japan China and Greenland russian Ivory carvings from the Hermitage in Leningrad and the museum for pictorial arts in archangels Are being shown through Jan. 3 for the first time outside the soviet Union.
