Andy says he s proud or the results of his recent Gams Chamois Hunt because of the Mountain climbing Challenge he s 68 years Young and the Shoi which was the longest he d Ever made. His Story goes like this in past years when t turned off the German Al Pine Highway onto the Road leading into the mountains the weather had usually been bad with rain sleet Snow or fog. Bui on this Day there was Sunshine and a mild Breeze. My upward ascent into the mountains was was the first time t could enjoy the View. Midway up i stopped to breathe the fresh air and enjoy the Beauty the Mountain lops in less than on hour i met the Peru Jacger professional Hunter and guide and his family. I gladly accepted the offer or a roam with Bath in Thier Home. This seemed better than roughing it in the Hunting Cabin. He was Quick to say that our Hunting chances were not Good. No Gams had been seen during the past week because of exceptionally hot weather. Our Hunt began at 3 30 . That Day. The Trail leading up the Mountain was dry Tor the first time i had walked it. Previously it had been wet from rain or covered with Snow. After a Tew minutes of walking i noticed the trait was just As Steep if not More so than in the past. An hour of walking brought us to the tip of he Mourlan Range where we could see Miles of Alpine Forest Meadows and valleys excellent habitat for red Deer and Chamois. In the past we could always Sec animals some where in the distance from this Point. Today Noth ing late in the afternoon a Shower chilled the air. We waited until dark hoping wild game would Mark Swearengen " come out to feed. Nothing appeared. Next morning there was a chill in inc air and a Clear sky which was Welcome after inc hot climb the previous Day. We reached the top of he Mountain just As inc Sun Rose aver the peaks. We stalked for two hour following game trails along the Cliffs scanning each Meadow and Mountain Side for Gams. Finally we spotted some in a Valley below. We watched them for nearly two hours. My guide finally identified the gics female Gams to be taken. He cautioned me the shot would be Long More than 200 Yards. Is. Hufenus was with me. My shot was perfect. Thirty minutes Laler after a hazardous challenging descent to inc Valley where the Chamois Lay my guide quickly counted the rings on the animal s horns. When he stood up he was beaming. He shoo my hand and said Windmann Sycil you now have an 11-year-old ii was Good to hear of Andy s Waidman Sheil. It made me reflect on my european Hunting experiences which started Back in 1974. First it was the Hunting course and German Hunting License then my first Hunt. Four shots four pheasants. 1 was off to a Good Start. Then my interest in Hunting look off. The months and years following were filled with countless Hunts for Roebuck mounting trophies a Hiresh red Deer Stag i decided not to shoot a Gams Buck a Good Hiresh taken High in the Alps near pheasant Hunting near Heidelberg and Regensburg. There were Hunts in France and Scotland and leaching classes for new Hunters with my Hunting friends Ron Ridenor and a duller in Kaiserslautern. There were wonderful mornings spent wan Dering through Snow covered Foross in the of burp. Fatz near Burg Wengenfeld. Numerous occasions far talking with Hunting friends at a Small table Over a Beer or hoi Tea. Some parties following inc Hunts were big and some Small. They were All Lun now 1 find myself wondering what happened tit All. I have not been Hunting once this year since the season started. Ten years ago 1 went Hunting almost every weekend. Now Only dreaming about Dawn hours among inc Oak and Pine Trees. Have 1 been too Busy doing other or have i just become Lirtz could i be losing inter Cal 1 Don t think so. Andy s Story probably helped me and this week end 1 just might get the time 10 put on some old Wool boots and Hal. And head for the Woods. I Hope to see those familiar colors and hear the wild sounds again i la have my binoculars Rucksack and Rifle Slung Over my shoulder i la walk quietly Stop then walk some More. Seems in s been a Long time so will i still love Hunting As much As before yes. A letter from Harold Barnes of Morganton. A.
