European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - December 3, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday decembers 1987 the stars and stripes Page 21 a a All Europe posed some problems the announcement of inc is All Europe football team rings Down he curtain on the 1987 Dodds fall sports program. I d like to say that All was peaches and Cream about that final project. However there were some problems the big Gest being what to do Wilh people in Italy who played eight Man football. I always have treated eight Man football for what it actually is a different Ball of Wax. In the past eight Man was played in Turkey and Spain in their con few a. By soc Storberg and Brussels in the bin nor last year and by the smaller schools in Italy against each other but especially against bigger schools Aviano Naples and Vicenza. Those three schools have always played Good representative football even in the past couple of years when Aviano was much smaller than the other two in enrolment. And those teams always had people who figured in the stars and stripes All Europe reckoning and who actually were chosen for the team. In fact Vicenza quarterback David Richmon was chosen last year at quarterback As a Junior com piling such figures As 804 Yards passing for nine touchdowns and Rushing 350 Yards for six More. His data also included an 80-Yard to Kickoff return in Only four games. This year his statistics were spectacular certainly Good enough to Merit All Europe consideration again. He scored 30 touchdowns 25 Rushing two apiece on punt and Kickoff returns and one on a pass reception and he also threw for three touchdowns. Richmond was not alone in enjoying an outstand ing season in Italy this year. Aviano s Marcus Cor bin for instance also had some remarkable num Bers and when the two clashed in the two league games the rivalry i be been told was really some thing to behold. I really tried to work out a system thai would include the possibility of considering the Italy play ers for is All Europe recognition. I tried to work out a plan whereby a percentage format could be util cd but could not come up with anything feasible. I realize it does t seem fair to the Italy football players not to be considered. But under the 1987 setup it certainly would not have been fair to the football players in All the other conferences to use the big numbers eight Man football produced. Good athletes of course Are Good no matter where they play and i feel certain that the outstand ing performers in the Italy program this year would have been outstanding in any other program. But there is no Way of proving that. How Many touch Downs Richmond would have scored playing 11-Man football is something Intang Cable. Had Italy played its eight Man game on a reduced sized Field perhaps there would have been some justification for recognizing its performers. Choosing Berlin s Geo i e Popoy was rather an easy decision to make. He turned the bears program completely around. The bears chalked up four wins. More than they had recorded in the last three cars combined and made inc Small schools semifinals. Other coaches had much glossier records Bui they were achieved with a flock of Icett Crmen on hand for another year. However making the final decisions on the itch Sive and defensive i Lay is of Ilie Yeai we j Jilli cult task a wry difficult task because there was so much Talent on hand a special on defense. How Ever in the end. It was determined thai Icv san s Calvin Peterson and and Munich s malt Hillman did just a Little Bil More for their respective teams. I really appreciate the great assistance i received from the coaches who were interested enough i their players to submit individual recommendations on their players and i especially appreciate the data they submitted on outstanding performers on other teams. The decision by the Germany aaa and a coaches to make being named All conference a pre requisite for All Europe consideration definitely was not appreciated. That some coaches changed their minds helped make the team a better one i believe. A Mannheim and got a jump on the Winter sports activities when they opened their Basket Ball seasons tuesday night. They were originally scheduled to meet saturday but received permission to move up their debuts because they were so close together. Mannheim prevailed in All four games the boys varsity and Jav triumphing at Mannheim and the girls emerging victorious in . The respective Home coaches were on the stick in see prep on Page 22 All Europe from Page 17 numbers 17 forced turnovers a Solo safety 43 Solo tackles 64 assists three Fumble recoveries and three sacks. Adamson was credited with two Fumble recoveries a sack 11solos and 40 assists and Peterson had three interceptions five solos and is assists from his almost unapproachable safety Slot. Jenkins and Chris Kelley also did an excellent Job of turning the opposition in and if anyone got by them Ghent was there to bolster the Ramstein defense. Jenkins was credited with 49 solos six sacks two Fum Bles caused and two Fumble recoveries and Kelley had 28 solos 15 assists and eight sacks at their respective end slots. Ghent chalked up 42 tackles 24 assists two Sac Sand an interception caused three fumbles and recovered two. Neal had a five sack 22-sok40 assist Campaign for Wiesbaden and Randolph registered nine interceptions three of which he returned for touchdowns. He also had 11 solos and 12 assists. Francois had seven sacks one of which resulted in a key safely in is s win Over shape he also was in on 63 tackles and recovered three fumbles. Teammates Brennan also a Sophomore and Delia abetted Francois immensely As the raiders capped off the season with Awin Over Woodbridge the first Ever Atlan tic Region championship game. was in on 83 tackles 17 unassisted while causing four fumbles and Delia also had 17 solos in a year that included 59 assists and three interceptions. Vince Killcy St. Julien and Bob Wil Liams key Nolod the Pitburg defense. Kcal Lcy led the team for the third straight year in statistics with 21 solos 67 assists four fumbles caused two recoveries a blocked punt an interception which he returned 93 Yards for a to and three sacks. He also assisted on three other sacks. St. Julien had 15 solos 64 assists two fumbles caused a recovery and four sacks. He also was in on two other sacks. Williams led the Barons Wilh five Fumble recoveries caused three Bobbles netted pair of sacks and was in on 35 tackles seven unassisted. Mckinley kept the opposition in poor Field position much of the time by aver aging 38.4 on 29 pulls during the season including five 50 Yards or longer and Vaughn averaged better than 36 Yards on his pulls. Many people had better won lost re cords than Popoy but the Berlin Mentor gets the nod for turning the the bears program completely around. Berlin which finished at 4-4 and made the Small schools semifinals had won Only three games while losing 18 in the last three years. 1987 is All Europe prep football team the offence height 5-10 6-1 6-1 5-9 6-4 6-0 6-3 5-10 6-0 6-1 5-10 5-11 6-1 5-6 6-2 5-11 5-11 5-10 6-0 5-9 5-10 6-0 6-0 player of the year Calvin Peterson.
