European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 6, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Agazine she s lived her lyrics says cabaret performer Andrea Marcovicci i be experienced pretty much every single one of those a photo being burned made Andrea Marc Ovied a great Torch Singer by Cynthia Robins san Francisco examiner Iven the Torchie songs in her repertoire Why was i born stay Well or smoke gets in your eyes you might suspect that the american cabaret Singer Andrea Marcovicci is just a mass of suffering protoplasm. That each Lyric of the left behind Lover songs she sings is suffused with the tears of every bad love affair she s Ever survived every miserable lonely night every cheatin1 heart. And to some extent you d be right. Lousy taste in men you ask yeah she sighs. which makes her skill As the hottest new cabaret performer since Michael Feinstein so remarkable. She s been there. She s lived her lyrics. She can appreciate the emotion in each of the 270-plus songs in her Ever growing repertoire. Smoke gets in your eyes actually happened to me she says. I used to think it was a ridiculous song that somebody would come and Tell you that your Lover was unfaithful. It happened to me. I could t believe it. I was on a movie set and the make up artist said realizing what she was about to divulge Marcovicci backpedal mentally As the Iron curtain on All that negative emotion comes Down. I Don t want to talk about end of Story. But she sighs i m Only saying that i be experienced pretty much every single one of those her friends Call Andrea Marcovicci a method after All was t she an actress yes. And Shell Tell you she still is. But her singing is bred in the Bone the daughter of a Manhattan physician father she also had a Saloon Singer for a Mother a woman who chose to stay with her husband instead of run off when Hollywood beckoned or when Paul Whiteman offered her a Chance to sing with his orchestra. And now Marcovicci the slender and fragile sprite whom people in the business will Tell you used to be shy insecure a mass of neuroses has soared into that rarefied atmosphere of cabaret singing in such Britt Lely Chic boites As new York s Algonquin hotel the Gardenia club in los Angeles and san Francisco s Plush room. She is singing songs obsessed with songs Shell say that Are far older than she. And she is also having the time of my with her recent Success Marcovicci has joined that very Small pantheon of people Julie Wilson Karen Akers Jane Oliver and of late Michael Feinstein who put the integrity of the music ahead of mass Market Appeal. Hers is a very different kind of Fame. This is artistic Fame she emphasizes. Fame on my Marcovicci is sitting at a dimly lit Banquette in the rear of the Plush room the afternoon following her polished and relaxed opening in san Francisco sipping from a styrofoam cup of hot Tea with Lemon. Her Throat is of major concern to her. She talks of seeing a doctor for treatment once a week whether she needs it or not. Ten years ago i used to be Able to sing All night Long screaming out at my Boyfriend party Down smoke drink Cognac sleep one hour and Wake up singing like a Bird she laughs. No More. Shell sweat bullets and then say very reluctantly that she is not 40but close six years ago or so she was starring in a to series called be ringers playing the show s Bitch a role that wednesday july 6, 1988 could have developed into the next Alexis Carrington had the show been a hit she explains and had i become the new Joan Collins. But it would never be satisfying because i would be doing something i did not respect artistically. My Fame would have come from a nighttime soap opera where i m memorizing my words and putting on Long fingernails and $2,200 Worth of clothing a Day and having fun. But artistically i would always be aching for something else. To have Fame on my own terms which is what s happening to me is. Amazing until three years ago when Marcovicci started singing in clubs with some seriousness although she Points out she really began singing in 1975 at Reno Sweeney s in new York while she was acting in the front a film she made with Woody Allenger career was t taking off the Way she d hoped. I be had Tough Luck in every department you can have Tough Luck in she laughs shrugging a pair of very elegant shoulders. Every movie i made flopped. The front big movie. Great movie. Flop movie. When i finally broke Down and did what i thought would be a commercial movie Airport 75flopped. The hand with Michael Caine How could that go wrong flopped. He was Good in it and so was then there were the three Broadway shows in 1972, the ambassadors ran five Days. In 1977, Nefertiti closed in Chicago. It flopped. Bad Book. It never entered my mind it would close she moans. So Here bruised by a recalcitrant career but not bowed is Andrea Marcovicci. Finally after nearly 20 years in the business a rip roaring Success. And it just knocks her socks off. Distributed by Scripps Howard news service the stars and stripes Page 13
