She went on to say that the were foolish to give in to the pres sure. Of course she was right butt s More complicated than that Ann. I am the Mother of three boys and one girl in that order. If you could see what goes on around Here you d have an entirely differ ent picture. All my sons began receiving Mash notes at age 12 or 13. In every Case the girls wrote in explicit language about their willingness to do any thing to prove their with the first son i was shocked. By the time the third boy turned 13, i was accustomed to it. My boys have always been very open with me. The made it Plain that All the girls wanted to have sex. I counselled them on the importance of responsible behaviour and the emotional toll that results from intimacy at such a Young age. They listened to me for a while but by the time they turned 17 the pressures became Over whelming. When my daughter was 14, i would hear her on the phone pursuing a certain boy As relentlessly As some of the girls had pursued her Brothers. We had several Talksabout respectability morality and pregnancy. She was Well informed and i Felt certain that i had gotten through to her. At age 15 she lost her virginity. The fellow dropped her like a hot potato. That did More to keep her on the straight and narrow than anything i had said. Please Ann be realistic. We can t fight to peer pres sure hormones and Mother nature. California mom who tried dear mom it s True that the girls Are much More aggressive today than they were 20 years ago. The pressures to engage in sex Are everywhere. But parents must keep the doors of communication open. They must talk about morality the importance of abstinence and at the same time make sure both boys and girls Are knowledgeable about Protection against pregnancy and venereal disease. Parents who find it difficult or impossible to discuss sex with their children should be aware of my Booklet sex and the please Don t Send for the Booklet and shove it in the kid s face and say Here read hand this column to your teen and say maybe this Booklet is something you should Send the Price is $3 and requires a Long self addressed stamped no. 10 envelope 45 cents postage the address is Ann Landers . Box 11562, Chicago 111. 60611-0562. Many teens have written to say it s the Best thing they be read on the subject. I m proud of it. Dear Ann Landers my brother Jeff was engaged to be married in july of 1987. In May there was an elaborate Shower. Many expensive gifts were Given. In june Jeffrey died in a car Accident. My grief stricken parents went out of their Way to Comfort Alice his Fiancee. But she seemed too consumed with her own feelings to realize that they were hurting too. Three months after Jeffs funeral Alice was dating someone else. Should t Alice offer to return the Shower gifts i can Tsee How she could consider using them with someone else when she knows they were meant for her and Jeff. Heartsick sister in Buffalo dear sister give her a break. The poor girl lost her Fiance a month before the wedding and now a year later you Are worried about a few Shower gifts. Wish her Well. Strangers mesh together As a family three Hundred fifty people were brought together for the first time on Mac flight mc31 out of Charles ton International Airport. Their destination Frank Furt West Germany. At 5 01 . On june 15 they settled into a Tran world airlines dc-10. A trip which was to last a Brief eight hours turned into the memory of a lifetime. Inthe Span of three Days these men women and children would be transformed into a family where rank age race and Branch of service had no meaning. By 8 30 ., the number two engine had blown Anoil line forcing a Landing at Philadelphia. The Crew was Calm and professional but the endless string of fire fighting equipment lining the runway highlighted the concern of terminal officials. Just prior to mid night the engine was repaired and the family was airborne again. At 3 14 . The aircraft rolled to a screeching halt at Philadelphia. Number two was gone. Twelve hours later 350 weary bodies checked into the Cher Ryhill Hyatt hotel in new Jersey. By now roughly 22 hours from the Charleston departure the family had formed. Colonels privates and airmen worked hand in Han to ensure the Well being of the an Assembly line manned by All ranks and branches distributed Luggage. Children were cared for by All. A year old boy stretched out in the Lap of a woman slept quietly peacefully. The child s name was unknown. It did matter. The parents were elsewhere looking after the needs of others. Luggage and valuables were left unattended. This was a family no need to fear theft. A Young boy sat on the floor nursing a Cut foot surrounded and comforted by concerned faces he did t know. A Young airman Phil Sandlin distributed meals to families. A colonel Robert Phillips turned Down a commercial flight to stay with the chaplain James Walker with his winning smile and sgt. Maurice Howard saw to the needs of mothers and children. In less than three Days these strangers had grow together. They had met the difficulties with Grace and dignity and had overcome them As a family. I was proud of them. I was proud to have served with them. I cannot help but believe that these men women and children were Only a snapshot of the forces our nation has chosen to preserve world peace and i am pleased to have met them. My very Best wishes to those who served with me on flight mc31. Maj. Charles m. Whitehurst Wurzburg West Germany proper training saved choking child s life frequently in this column one reads letters from disgruntled mothers wishing to provide child care in their government quarters without being trained and certified by the Community child development serv ices officials. The response from he Usa eur Gram managers usually stresses the importance of training in first Aid and car procedures As Well As the benefits of knowing proper developmental techniques and Home based business principles. Recently i had the Opportunity to see the Wisdom of these requirements first hand. While visiting the bad Hersfeldt acs office As part of a temporary duty visit i was witness to the near death of a child who was choking on a piece of hard Candy. Six adults myself and the child s Mother included stood by helplessly because no one had been trained in first Aid. Fortunately the bad Hersfeldt cd Center director Andrea Taylor was on the scene and immediately took charge applied proper life saving techniques and Dis lodged the piece of Candy. For those underground care givers who have no been properly certified through the cd program and who feel they Are qualified to care for children be cause they have successfully raised children of their own i d like to raise the following questions do you think the Mother of the choking child in bad Hersfeldt was glad to have a trained child care provider on Han when she was unable to do anything to save her child s life would you have been Able to save this child hade been in your care i Hope this example demonstrates the importance of proper training and certification prior to taking responsibility for lives of Young children. If you re no certified get certified. If you re using an uncertified child care provider consider the risks to your child and the benefits of locating someone who has been properly trained. Shirley Kappa Schwet Zingen West Germany housing area speeders irk Hanau Reader my letter is in response to the woman concerned about children and traffic in military housing areas.
