European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 15, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday july 15, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 11 Arm Landers letters dear Ann Landers my husband is in the private sanitation business. He picks up for malls and other stores. Some times he brings Home useful items that have been thrown out to make room for new goods. Almost every month he brings Home a big Box of shoes from the Thorn can stores. Each shoe is split up the Side so that it cannot be resold. Ann when i see these perfectly Good shoes ruined it makes me sick. My Friend who works in an area emergency shelter tells me that they Are in dire need of shoes for men women and children. My Grandfather who is a Shoemaker has offered to fix the shoes that Are salvageable. I m sure other people in the shoe repair business would help if they were asked. I wrote a letter to the president of the company but he did not reply. Meanwhile perfectly Good shoes Are being sliced. Can you persuade this company to Stop the foolish practice and donate those shoes to shelters for the homeless please try. Concerned in Bristol Conn. Dear Conn something is wrong somewhere. A spokesman for Thorn can told us that it is company policy to throw away shoes Only when one shoe from a pair is missing or the pair is mismatched different sizes or if a shoe is defective. Slashing Good shoes and tossing them in the dump Ster is against company policy. Shoes that Don t sell Are donated to local charities. By the time this letter appears in print i doubt that your husband will be picking up any More slashed shoes from Thorn can. The Home office is going to Check the stores in your area to make sure that the unsold shoes get to charities that need them. Dear Ann Landers i have been married for eight months. These have been the worst eight months of my life. Strangely enough to look at us you would bet that we Are the happiest couple in town. De and i Are attractive outgoing professionals with excellent incomes. We have a Lovely Home and two new cars. In Public de treats me like a Queen. At Home he is both physically and mentally Abu Sive. I have no one to blame but myself however. The abuse started Well before we married. If i went into detail about the beatings you d think i was making it up. If you meted you would not believe my Story. He is totally charming. I can t count the number of women who have told me How Lucky i am. The reason i m writing to you is to warn other women. Men who Are abusive will not change after marriage no matter what they say. It Only gets worse. I Don t know what is going to happen Ann but i Hope i live to Start my life Over. Dead end in Virginia dear a your Only Hope is joint counselling that works or else get yourself out of that marriage. If you can t locate a Counselor or a family service Agency experienced in this area Contact the National coalition against Domestic violence. It will refer you to support groups and counselling programs in your area. The toll free number is 800 333-Safe or write to . Box 15127, Washington . 20003-0127. Your letter should put to rest once and for All the crazy notion that women beaters Stop when they marry. A Man who punches and slaps his girl around during courtship will Knock the daylights out of her after the knot is tied. Contract cleaning policies discussed everyone was Happy when we heard that the Mili tary had contracted for quarters cleaning when Mili tary members have a permanent change of station pcs. It s a great idea but i have one question what cleaning does the cleaning team do after we get through doing our part the Walls oven refrigerators mildew around the Bathtub mop Ping the floor the Washer and dryer Etc. The Only thing left for the cleaning team is the windows. Tough Job right a Friend who moved in january said when he re turns he will become a contractor for the military for a service he won t provide. I feel that is what has happened with the cleaning teams. The military has contracted for a service not provided. Janet Talbott Ramstein a West Germany editor s note col. Thomas n. Goode director housing and Community services he Safe replies we Are delighted to respond to your comments on government cleaning of quarters. My comments will be directed toward Safe policy for air Force bases. The article stated the crash occurred on the last of eight Days of flying during the biannual air i am under the impression that tactical air meets Are Bien Nial not biannual. Biennial Means occurring every two years and biannual Means occurring twice a year. If the meets Are biennial and your writers just Don t know the difference Between the two words Tell them not to feel bad. I have known College professors who did t know the difference either.
