He played the Best round of his life with what May have been his Best shot Ever and revived a career that was in disarray. A round like that comes along Only once in every 25 years every 50 years Ballesteros said after he beat Nick Price in a stirring head to head Duel with a 6-under Par 65, Best round of the tournament. I think we saw a new seve out there today said Price who stretched Balleste Ros to the limit of his remarkable Talent. I think he s come out of his Shell and is ready to resume his place in Golf Price said. Ballesteros agreed. This was More than just his third Triumph in the oldest of All the world s Golf tournaments More than just his fifth major title. It will he said restore the Confidence that was shattered by his lapses in the 1986 and 1987 masters. Now i will remember this Ballesteros said. I will not remember hitting into the water on 15 at Augusta i will not remember missing that Little putt in a playoff last year. After that my Confidence was not so Good. I was wondering if it was coming my he said letting the sentence Trail off unfinished. It had been four years since he d won a major title. In that period he had a complicated bitter fued with pea tour commissioner Deane Beman. His once Jaunty Confidence damaged the victories that once cascaded into his eager hands dwindled to a precious few. He was replaced at the top of the world rank Ings by Greg Norman then Ian Woosnam then Sandy Lyle. Now there is the memory of a Confidence restoring Victory in what May have been his greatest Day. It was nailed Down by what May have been his greatest shot a 9-Iron that stopped 3 inches from the cup for a Birdie on the 16th Hole at the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf club. It was the Pivotal Hole just As it was in 1979 when Ballesteros won his first major title. Seve was wearing the same Blue sweater and trousers he wore nine years ago he said when the Young wild swinging Balles Teros won the 1979 British open with a Birdie from a parking lot on the same 16th Hole. I did t see any cars in the Fairway this time he said. He played it in More conventional style this time. Price said he played it perfectly. It was sheer class Price said. He hit a 117th British open perfect Ballesteros said it May have been the Best most important shot of his life. He compared it to the 30-foot Birdie putt on the 72nd Hole at St. Andrews that provided him with his 1984 British open title. This one broke the tie with Price giving Ballesteros a one shot Lead that he nursed Home with the help of a Par saving Sand wedge on the 18th. It became a two shot margin Only when Price needing a last Hole Birdie to tie ran a Long putt Well by the cup and missed it coming Back. It was the second last round loss in this tournament for Price a soft spoken Man from Zimbabwe who carries a British pass port and now lives in the United states. But there was a great difference in the two. In 1982, he blew a three shot Lead with six holes to play. This time he played Well. He just ran into a once in a lifetime round. In fact when Price went Birdie Eagle Par on nos. 6, 7 and 8, he actually lost a shot and wound up tied with Ballesteros who went Birdie Eagle Birdie on the same three holes. There s nothing better to be Able to play the kind of Golf we played today in the final round of a major championship Price said after his 69 had produced a 275 total two Back of Ballesteros 273. I think we were both just waiting for the other to make a mistake. We did t make any. He just played better than i did Price said. It was Ballesteros third Victory of the year the 54th of his career and went with masters victories in 1980 and 1983 to boost his major tournament total to five. He started the sunny Day s play two shots Back caught Price with the Birdie Eagle Birdie burst on the front went past him with the 9-Irpn shot on the 16th and then secured it with a spectacular Chip on the final Hole. When he missed the 18th Green far to the left Price appeared to have the opening he needed. Price put his approach on the front of the Green some 30-35 feet away. With the Ball nestled Down in deep grass some 60 feet away Ballesteros deftly chipped Down to 4 inches the Ball touching the cup As it went by and he had it. Price s Only Chance was to Hole his Long putt and it was t really close. If Nick Price keeps playing like this he will be a Champion. He will win this championship some Day Ballesteros said. Price had no apologies nor any need for them. They say i lost the other one in 1983. But this time i played As Well As i can. I m confident in my ability to win this Tournai seve Ballesteros welcomes his third British open trophy to his collection monday. Ment he said. Nick Faldo the defending Champion from England and the third in the threesome with Ballesteros and Price matched Par 71 and finished third at 279, six Back of the Leader. Americans Fred couples and Gary Koch came on to share fourth at 281. Each had a 68. Couples scored Eagle-3 on consecutive holes the sixth and seventh and at that Early stage was within one shot of the Lead. But that was before Price and Ballesteros played those Par-5s, both reachable with Irons. Each played them 3-under-Par, and couples drifted Back. Peter senior of Australia was alone at 282 after a 69. Tied at 283 were Payne Stewart David Frost of South Africa japanese Veteran Isao Aoki and masters Champion Sandy Lyle of Scotland. Aoki and Stewart each had a 67 and Frost shot 68. Lyle Only three off the Pace when the Clay s play started could do no better than a 74, including 40 on the Back. Ballesteros caught Price with that Birdie Eagle Birdie spree that began with a 2-putt Birdie-4 on the sixth. He hit a 5-Iron to 6 feet for the Eagle on the seventh and dropped an 18-foot putt on the eighth. Price stayed with him on the sixth and seventh holes with a Birdie and a 2-Iron to 3 feet for Eagle on the seventh. But he could t answer seve s eighth Hole Birdie and they went to the Back tied for the top. Both birdied the 10th, Ballesteros holing from 20 feet and Price dropping a 10-footer in on top of it. Ballesteros made another 20-footer on the 11th and Price lipped out from about 15 feet. That gave Ballesteros a one shot Lead but he gave it Back when he missed the Green and bogeyed the 12th. Price hit a Sand wedge to 2 inches for Birdie on the 13th, and Ballesteros matched the Birdie with an 18-foot putt. They remained tied. Both bogeyed the 14th, missing the Green. It was still a tie. The championship swung on the 16th. Track stars beat the heat at trials Page 23 boxing team set for trip to Seoul Page 23 Viola wins 15th game for twins Page 26
