European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 3, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday augusts 1988 the stars and stripes Page 25 racing Roundup of i in t everything Bow stresses Bow of Munich whose super fast Bow m3 Model scored an impressive Victory last weekend in the 24 hours of spa Franco champs touring car Clas sic recently made the decision to remain out of for Mula one grand prix racing despite earlier successes in that Field. You May recall that with its 1.5-liter Turbo engine Bow became the first manufacturer to win the formula one Turbo world championship its engine powering Nelson Piquet to the world driving Crown in 1983. The Bow turbos continued to Power the Brabham cars until the Brabham team quit formula one racing at the end of the 1987 season Bow also leaving the scene then As its con tract with Brabham ran out. This season rumours had persisted that Bow would soon return with a car and engine of its own but the rumours proved false. There Are still rumours that Mercedes May return and that could Well be As Mercedes has not denied them and it is already test ing the Waters this season with touring car racing and sports car racing. The big prestige Challenge in formula one of course is coming from the All conquering japanese Honda outfit whose engines Power the Mclaren cars. So Mercedes May be tempted to meet that Chal Lenge and the american Penske firm May be consid ering it too As it s been rumoured that owner Roger Penske is trying to buy the Lotus team. If he should he May get his Power source from general motors which has voiced an interest in formula one racing. Penske so successful in american cart racing also did formula one in the 1970s but won Only one race the austrian grand prix in 1976. So he would probably like to give it another try. But Back to Bow. During the recent Ger Man grand prix at Bockenheim we talked to Fried Bert Holz of Bow s sports department and he said the main problem with a firm like Bow going directly into formula one with car engine and the works is that you have to win within two or three seasons to avoid negative publicity. With All of the circus publicity in formula one you can t wait five or six years for Success Holz said. The very minimum would be three years. So there s an immediate development problem. We build very Good sports Street cars. Really High tech cars. And we feel that our Best Way to show them off and to develop them is through touring car racing. This Type of racing is better for our Normal customer. After All he benefits from it. And the crowds Are huge this year at the German touring car championship events with Bow Ford and Mercedes competing. There were 90,000 spectators at the Noris ring m in Ornburg. That s More than will come Here for the German grand prix. Holz was right. The German up Drew about 70,000 spectators. We made a decision in 1986 that there would be no More formula one racing Holz said and when our contract with Brabham ran out at the end of the 1987 season that was it. But rumours kept persisting that we would be Back so we stated publicly during june that we would not return to formula one but would continue to concentrate on touring car racing. We feel this is the Best Way to go. It s also a matter of Money Holz said. With the world economic picture so Uncertain we must think first of our regular cars and our Market Randy Barnett to have the Money to develop the cars and to improve them. Both our 5-series and 7-series Street cars Are new and we have the new 3-series project going so there is a tremendous amount of Money involved and we would rather spend it on our customer Street cars than spend it on formula one racing. And for Mula one racing is expensive it could Cost us $60 to $70 million a year. Touring car racing mean while which obviously benefits us the most costs us $3 to $5 Holz stressed that Bow has had a sports image practically since its founding Days and that the Munich firm has already competed in practically every Type of racing including formula one. But if we were to return it would have to be with car engine and All not just the engine As with Brabham where we had no real control in team matters. And we simply see it As far too expensive in an Era of eco nomic uncertainty. That plus the problem of being successful right now right out of the Box. We have the sporting image and Bow will al ways be involved in motor sport. We May eventually go into formula one but it s difficult to say when. Maybe in three to six years. Maybe while Bow will always have a sporting image it is interesting to note that the japanese Honda Nissan and Toyota firms Are also working hard to establish theirs. Honda is now the dominant engine Force in for Mula one racing Nissan is tops in Simsa sports car racing which was once the province of porsche and Toyota is challenging Lancia in the rally world with its new 4-wheel-drive celica Turbo car. At the Simsa race in Portland ore., last sunday Geoff Brabham drove the Nissan Ftp car to a re Cord seventh straight Victory while his teammate John Morton placed second in the other Nissan Ftp. Brabham started from pole position and mor ton was next up. Jaguar xjr-9 cars finished third and fourth while a porsche 962 placed fifth. In the 10 Simsa Ftp races run so far this season Nissan s seven wins Are followed by porsche with two and Jaguar with one. Racing buffs and purists May not like it but with their continued Success in motor sport it will not be Long before Honda Nissan and Toyota join the ranks of Bow porsche Jaguar and others where motor sport image is concerned.
