European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 7, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Arm landed letters dear Ann Landers i did t dislike seat belts i de tested them. All the usual Rea sons plus since i am a Busty 4-foot-11, the shoulder strap Cut across me in All the wrong places. Last year i married a Man who never orders me to do anything except fasten my seat Belt. Three weeks ago we were in an awful Accident. The car flipped Over 2 /2 times and landed upside Down. Miraculous a we crawled out on our own with nothing but minor injuries. The car was totalled. There in t a shred of doubt in our minds those seat belts saved our lives. Ann we were driving within the Speed limit and the Accident was t our fault. Some fool who must have been going 90 Miles an hour crowded us off the Road and there was no place to go but the ditch. May i pass on a very important message to your1 readers the Only people who Don t need to Wear seat belts Are those who Are never going to be in an Acci Dent. And if you think that s you you Are dead wrong. Almost mangled in Michigan dear almost mangled thousands maybe millions of people have had Simi Lar experiences. I Hope every person who reads this will take your letter seriously. How foolish not to take that simple precaution. It can mean the difference Between life and death. Dear Ann Landers i can t wait to comment on those letters from your correspondents who deny that the women s movement had anything to do with the competitiveness and ran Cor that exists Between the sexes. It is now Clear that women s lib is indeed responsible for Many of the problems we face today. I m talk ing about unemployed family men marital infidelity the High divorce rate and messed up kids who were and continue to be dumped in Crummy Day care Cen ters or left with moronic baby Sitters. The women you should want to hear from Are those like me who were victims of that feminist Claptrap. I now know that women s lib is baloney. And baloney is baloney no matter How you slice it. Meanwhile i Hope Phyllis Schlafly won t assume from this letter that i have defected to her Side. I would t free myself from one Bunch of goofy broads to join another group of lunatics. Count me out in o. City dear o. City you May want to be counted out but a surprising number of readers wanted to be included. The response to those columns was staggering. Many who wrote pointed out that women s lib opened Many doors to females. It also made Many businesses pay women what they Are Worth. Those who railed against the movement made the same Points that you made and there is no denying that they have some Validity. On balance i would say that the greatest achievement of the women s liberation movement was legislation that made discrimination on the basis of sex illegal. Not every female wants to be a truck Driver or a heart sur Geon but those who want to should not be denied the Opportunity. Dear Ann Landers please Settle a longstanding argument who goes through a revolving door first the Man or the woman Gary ind. Dear the Man should go first and push the door for his lady. Nine out of 10 men Don t know this and the woman is the one who does the pushing. Vehicle shipping regulations explained what is the Deal on car shipment Back to the states on our last tour in West Germany we bought a Toyota celica. We paid for shipment Back to the United states because it was a foreign made vehicle that had never been registered in the states and we had not shipped a vehicle Over. Now we re Back in West Germany. The car came with us at army expense. Due to an unexpected enlargement in our family twins we had to buy a larger vehicle to accommodate three car seats. We shopped around and All we could find that we could afford Wasa Toyota Van. At the time there were no comparable american made cars available. Anyway we re being told that we re going to have Topay for shipment of the Van to the states. Why we shipped a Toyota Over Why should we pay to ship Neback also we re told that we would t qualify for an exception to policy because the car was t stolen. So Iguess that if our celica had been wrecked or stolen i could replace it at army expense but since we sold it with Good reason we Are expected to replace it Only with an american made car there is another question Here. We re planning on applying for an Intra theater Transfer to Alaska. If we get accepted How would it work then i can understand the need for rules on shipping foreign cars at . Expense but circumstances can show the need to Bend the rules at times. And just because someone wrecked a car Why should they get a exception to policy to have to buy american any assistance you can give us regarding regulations Points of Contact Etc. Would be most appreciated. Name withheld Stuttgart West Germany editor s note Victoria Logan office of the Deputy chief of staff logistics he Usa eur re plies we cannot Grant an exception under the circumstances you describe. . Public Law does not allow the shipment at government expense of a foreign made vehicle to the United states even if it replaces a foreign made vehicle that was shipped at government expense from the United states. This restriction also applies to the shipment at per Sonal expense to another port with the intention of fur ther shipment at government expense to another Over seas duty station. In your Case shipment to the United states at your own expense with the intent of shipment to Alaska at government expense is not authorized. The Cost for shipment of your vehicle will be at your own expense to final destination. Exceptions to the foreign made Pov restriction can be made in the rare cases when the vehicle shipped overseas was destroyed due to an Accident fire or theft. The destruction of the vehicle was beyond the control of the owner. The need for replacement was so urgent that i could not be promptly satisfied by Purchase of an Ameri can made vehicle. Rude guests encountered at arc hotel please help me. I am in search of the Serviceman or woman of yesterday that military member who was constantly aware of the feelings of the other people around him or her. This was the Soldier who went beyond being mannerly and considerate who was an excellent example of citizenship and professionalism i recently spent three Days and two nights at the armed forces recreation Center in Garmisch with a Friend from the states. I must say i have never been so embarrassed by the actions of so Many comrades in arms. There were adults and children alike running up and Down the hallways in the Middle of the night with no concern to anyone else s feelings but their own. The mornings were just As bad radios playing and ple taking loudly outside of doors where vacationing people were attempting to sleep. My Friend has left to go Back to the states with a impression of the men and women of the armed serv ices As being some of the rudest people she has overcome across this makes me very sad because i have worked with and come to know some of the most admirable people in the two Short years i have been a military member.
