I ran for the 13-mile Point when 1 asked the people giving me water where is the finish line i had another tenth of a mile to lot of germans gave us water along the Way. I passed a lot of people some had trained for the race and others who were just going along with the group. Those who did t train had real suggestion for improvements they should have gatorade at the finish line. They gave me Orange soda and it almost made me throw trials boost Lewis Confidence for Seoul by Tony Kornheiser the Washington Post new York our conversation with Carl Lewis continues now after a Short break for the waiter to Clear the table and we move ahead from his Bitle Sweel recollections of 1984 to Ihei compressible optimism Lewis will bring to Seoul. The trials did More for my Confidence than anyone can imagine Lewis says exuberantly. Having again qualified for the 100,200, Long jump and the 4x100 relay Lewis could Harvest bushels of Gold unprecedented in olympic history no Man has Ever repeated As Gold medallist in the100,200 or Long jump. So he has one encompassing wish for Seoul i want to have the greatest Meel i be Ever if he does everyone else is history. Handicapping his individual events Lewis winning the Long jump is probably the lock of the olympics he s won 55long-jump competitions in a Row especially after his least Favorule person inthe world Larry Myricks threw such a scare at him at the trials jumping a per Sonal Best 28 feel 8 a inches and Lewis jumping in a downpour had logo 28-9 to Trump him. Complacency should l be an Issue inthe Springs. Indeed Lewis May come in an underdog. Ben Johnson beat him inthe record shattering 100 at the world championships in Rome and Lewis pro lege Joe Deloach ran him Down in the 200 at Indianapolis. For me to have any Chance to win inthe olympics Lewis says ticking off the numbers like they were multiplication tables i believe i m going to have to run 9.80 Legal Long jump 28-10 and run 19.85." Lewis exhales and so you Don t miss the Point says no one who s running now has run any of those 9.80 in the 100 would be a world Given what Lewis has accomplished in track and Field dominating the sprints and the Long jump for most of the1930s the most remarkable single statistic of his career is that he has never broken a world record. I be never focused on them he says insisting i Don t believe records Are important. It d be Greal to have one. I love it. But it s nol important to me the whole thing is about love of Competition is such Hal if you were to Sel up a facility with perfect Long jumping conditions a maximum Legal Tailwind springy runway soft Sand and Lell Lewis he could go there and jump 30 feel bul he d have to do it Alvalone he d say set up a Midnight rendezvous i d say no. I could t get up Forit. I m a Competition Lype person. I could t jump in a museum. I m not even a practice nol Only has l he Ever jumped 30feet in practice he says he s never even Laken a full Long run and jump in prac lice. We Don l jump Lewis says of his training you Don t know if you can break the record smiling mischievously Lewis says i Don t know what i can carefully says he s talking about projected times in Seoul not just As carefully he says Altitude records Are unfair everybody knows Hal demystifying Bob Beamon s 29 2 /2, which was Sel in Mexico the Way Lewis says if he jumps 29-2 al Seoul he won l Pul on his sweats and Siton a Lead i May not get thai Opportunity again. I la defile by jump some ? of my yes. See in in full flame when Lewis assesses the magnitude of Hisim Pacl on Irack declaring Bob Bea Mon was for Gollen. Who cared brought the event Back. No one cared about Bob Beamon until 84. No one remembered Jesse Owens. But in 84 someone cared about both of sit there thinking if Lewis applauds himself any harder his hands will fall there s an appealing sparkle to Lewis Candor. He can be outlandishly self serving no one remembered Jesse Owens get serious but his in t the theatrical bom Bast of some athletes or the numbing false modesty of so Many , he thinks he s the Best in the world but he recognizes thai losing has helped humanize him to the Public. In 1984, people saw me win and maybe they though i was driven by victories Lewis says reflectively. Now they Veseen me lose and they be seen i be been Able to handle 1984, he actually was subpar physically. He d run four meets in the six weeks prior to the olympics and one a Carl Lewis. Eyes bushels of Gold hamstring was sore. This time he also has scheduled four meets two Mobil grand prix events in Europe one exhibition in Holland and a meet in Japan but spaced them Over eight weeks to arrive in Seoul fresh. The thing about the olympics an major Competition it s All about Confidence he said. I m definitely More confident than the others. I just Don t believe there s anyone naturally More talented than i Senna takes hungarian up catches Prost Budapest Hungary a Brazil Ian Ace Ayrton Senna and teammate Alain Prost of France swept the top two places in sunday s hungarian grand prix stretching the Mclaren Honda Swinning Streak to 10 for the season.
