European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 16, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday August 16, 1988 the stars and stripes Page 5 debris threatens orbiting spacecraft estimated 48,000 objects surround Earth Washington a orbiting space debris poses a threat to spacecraft and should be eliminated a National aeronautics and space administration scientist told an International conference exploring various forms of space pollution sunday. Donald Kessler a project scientist Tanasa s Johnson space Center in hous ton said the debris ranges in size from old non functioning satellites and rocket boosters Down to nuts and bolts and even smaller objects from disintegrating spacecraft. Kessler estimated that at least 48,000 objects one centimetre or larger Are in orbit about the Earth but told a seminar of the International astronomical Union that the number is probably much higher. He said even a tiny object could dam age a spacecraft. In june 1983, a window of the space shuttle challenger was replaced after being struck by a piece of orbiting debris that caused a Small pit. Later chemical analysis revealed the window had been hit by a Fleck of paint no larger than eight one thousandths of an Inch in diameter. Kessler said such collisions involving the space shuttle Are rare because of the vehicle s Low orbit and the relatively Short length of time the shuttle spends in space. He said longer missions will re quire More Protection. The problem gets to be More severe for something like the space station which is planned to be continuously there for 30 years Kessler said. Shields Are currently being designed to protect the Crew from debris up to one centimetre in diameter. The Shields weigh 2,000 pounds per module and there Are six modules so that s an extra 12,000 pounds of weight that is going to have to be put into orbit because of the Orbital debris Environ ment Kessler said. A presidential directive now requires that american spacecraft be designed to minimize the creation of space debris. Kessler said future rocket boosters will probably be designed to fall Back to Earth and estimated that redesigning them might increase their Cost by 10 per cent to 20 percent. The United states is not alone in recognizing the growing danger of space de Bris Kessler said. A 1986 explosion of spent ariane rocket Booster threw some 400 pieces of debris into orbit an even that woke the european space Agency up to the problem of Orbital debris he said.
