Please please if you see yourself in this column today vow to turn Over a new Leaf. No child can grow up emotionally healthy and Loving unless he feels valued. Parental love is at the heart of self esteem. Dear Ann Landers i am writing in response to a letter and your answer that appeared in the Ithaca journal recently. There is absolutely no truth to the belief that Rice even instant can kill Birds. This Rumor received publicity because of a Bill introduced in the Connecticut legislature in 1985 by Mae Schmidle. This wild Story resulted in frightening thousands of brides into putting Birdseed in Little tulle and Chiffon bags so the guests would t throw Rice and kill the Rice is no threat to Birds. It must be boiled before it will expand. Furthermore All the food that Birds Swal Low is ground up by powerful Muscles and grit in their gizzards. Many Birds love Rice As any frustrated Rice Farmer will Tell you. I Hope you will print this information in your column and put an end to this myth. In the meantime keep throwing Rice folks. Tradition will be served and the Birds will eat Well and be healthy. Steven c. Sibley Cornell Laboratory of ornithology Ithaca . Dear Steven Sibley your letter proves once again that if a Story is repeated often enough people will believe it even though it is false and defies logic. We checked with an authority in the Bird House at Lincoln Park zoo in Chicago and she verified your statement. Shame on me for going along with that Crock. I feel like a Birdbrain. Obstacles to peace once again we hear that Israel s reluctance to sur Render the occupied territories is an obstacle to a settlement in the Middle East and that the israelis should be eager to Trade land for peace. What most people probably do not realize however is that the an organization dedicated to the liberation of All Palestine via the destruction of Israel was founded in 1964. At that time the Gaza strip and Golan Heights were part of Egypt and Syria respectively and the West Bank and East Jerusalem be longed to Jordan. However the rights of the palestinian people were not addressed at that time and no attempt was made to establish a palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. In View of the arabs control Over these areas Why did they seek War with Israel in 1967? the obvious answer is that the arabs wanted Tel Aviv Haifa and the rest of Israel proper also. They still do. Peace in the Region is not possible until the so called palestinians and other arabs recognize Israel s exis tence As a right and not merely As a fact. Name withheld Frankfurt West Germany Aguirre chief management actions Branch 1st personnel come he Usa eur replies the May 23 army times article to which you Are referring was merely informing its readers that the department of the army was studying the feasibility of recommending to the department of defense that the overseas tour in Europe be lengthened for most soldiers by one year. Studies of this nature Are not unusual and overseas tour lengths Are periodically reviewed. At this time it does not appear that a change in tour length is Likely to occur in the near future however the Issue will continue to be reviewed. In this regard con Stant analysis must be made in View of increasingly severe budgetary constraints and their consequent effect on permanent change of station policies. All readers should be assured that policies of this nature receive very careful analysis at the highest Levels and Soldier and family morale play a major role in such decisions.
