Marlys Olson who directs the child abuse Preven Tion program for the department of defense dependents schools in West Germany said puppets have been used in a variety of skits to educate Young Chil Dren about the dangers of child abuse. We be even had High school students come in to schools and use the puppets she said. She Hopes to see the curriculum aimed at grades kindergarten through five in place at every elementary school in Germany by the beginning of the 1989-90 school year. A psychologist at Schinnen s army Community service said Only 10 percent of child abuse cases Are reported to authorities. Part of the reason is that some children have been exposed to abuse All their lives an believe it Normal behaviour Ingeborg Sigel Johnson said. Young children especially believe this because that s the Only thing they know if they re brought up in an abusive household. For is Patti Schmidt to Gardner works with a puppet during a skit. But when they grow older they find out through peer pressure and just being around other people that this is not Normal she said. Someone to talk to is designed to nip these problems plus those of physical abuse and neglect at an Early stage. In Abby s Case the teacher asks her Why she s never told anyone about her Uncle. Who d believe me a kid Abby replies. The teacher assures her there is a problem and tells both Abby and the Young audience that there is help should they Ever encounter a similar situation.
