European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 31, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday August 31, 1988 the stars and Page 25 racing Roundup 88 season a Mclaren Honda bore the 1988 formula one grand prix season will go Down in the record books As the year of and if All continues according to form it will be the first time that one team has Ever won every grand prix race. This perhaps would t be so awfully Dull if the world championship season involved Only 10 races and ended in september. But now with 16 races on the Calendar from april through november a highly probable sweep by Mclaren Honda Borders on farce. In Short the 1988 season is proving a Gigantic bore. But perhaps it was inevitable. With this season the final one for the Turbo engines most teams opted for the less expensive non Turbo route. So it has been a test season of sorts for the non Turbo runners non with any Hope of winning. Mclaren Honda meanwhile has been opposed by Only four Turbo teams Ferrari Lotus Honda arrows megaton and Zak Speed. And All of these teams have proved from poor to mediocre not one remotely competitive against Mclaren or even competitive against some of the non Turbo teams for that matter. Next year hopefully we May see a return to close competitive formula one racing. But even Here Mclaren Honda May already have the Edge. Mclaren has developed an interim car that is powered by a newly developed 3.5-liter Honda v10 engine and it has undergone testing already at Silverstone where Mclaren s Drivers produced extremely Quick times. The test car was shown to the racing press at spa Franco champs last Friday during the belgian grand prix weekend. At spa Franco champs meanwhile it was a Case of More of the same with the Mclaren team winning its 11th grand prix from the 11 races staged so far this year and the one two Mclaren finish being the team s eighth. Brazil s Ayrton Senna won by some 30 seconds Over his teammate Alain Prost of France and Prost was so depressed after the belgian race that he con ceded his Hopes for the title telling reporters it s Over. It s lost. Ayrton has won the world championship. There s nothing else to say. He s had a fantastic season and it s logical to say that he deserves the who would argue in Belgium Senna recorded his ninth pole Posi Tion in 11 outings and scored his seventh Victory of the season his belgian win being his fourth in a Row and his sixth in the last seven races. It s obvious that Senna has the motivation to win his first world title while Prost twice world Champion no longer has the lust for a third one and has Given up. Going into the italian grand prix at Monza on sept. 11, the Mclaren team has a total of 147 Points while Ferrari follows with Only 44 Points. That gives a Clear idea of the crushing superiority of the Mclaren Honda operation. Ferrari meanwhile had a mis Erable weekend in Belgium neither car in Contention and both Gerhard Berger of Austria and teammate Michele Albreto of Italy failing to finish. In motorcycle racing California s Eddie Lawson clinched his third Soock world championship All three titles on Yamaha with a second place finish in the czech grand prix at Brno last sunday. Lawson has scored Points in All 1 4 races run so far this season the brazilian grand prix is the 1 5th and final round and his consistency paid off. The race for the 250cc world championship re Mains open with Sito Pons of Spain Honda leading countryman Juan Garriga Yamaha by just six Points going into the brazilian finale. Garriga kept his title Hopes alive by winning in Czechoslovakia where Pons finished second. Germany s Toni Mang the defending 250cc world Champion who has won Many other titles in the 250 class As Well As in the old 350cc division gave a demonstration ride at the czech up and then announced his retirement from racing. The highly pop ular Mang age 38, won the 250cc title in Brilliant fashion for Honda last season but injuries this year curbed his efforts and he decided to retire after a Long and illustrious career.
