European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 22, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday september 22, 1988 the stars and stripes Pago 21 prep pick i n s schedule does a Fiat foes could t last May at the cd neral european track and Field championships on or the big schools fool Bat coaches look me to task Over the publicity Gin sen High school had earned during its first three years of operation especially in football and Basket Ball. He also was gloating because talk had in that gig sen was going to be elevated a division to Germany a and he could t Wail until Charlie Toth gets up there with the big boys and found out it was t the same playing palsies week after when the 1988-89 prep schedules were release shortly thereafter Giessen had l been upgraded at All. However thai particular coach must have been in his glory because the Griffins were Given the Honor of opening their 1 988 football schedule against defending Germany a Champion and big school runner up film Borg and following up with Mannheim an aaa combo last year. This year Mannheim has been dropped a notch on the competitive scale ladder still a Grade above Giessen. The Griffins have been accorded the same Honor for basketball. Dodds schedule makers Over the years have developed a system of Protection. In the late 1970s, Osterhoff enjoyed considerable football Success record threatening Success in fact. Jack Hilgers Blackhawk went undefeated in 22straight games winning the last 17. Frankfurt owned the Dodds record of 10 straight wins. An osterholz team which had practically no one Back opened up against a Talent Rich Wiesbaden squad and got hammered. In the Early 80s, Aviano racked up 45 straight basketball victories one under the Dodds record held by Vicenza practically every Saint graduated and Vicenia was loaded you guessed it Avian against a Kunza and the cougars won going away. Those Are just a couple of examples. So a nearly depleted i Essen team drawing a Strong club like Numberg was t really too much of a Surprise no was it and a 51-fl Nalmberg Victory was t to shocking either. Thai s a trend. The Only thing is that Charlie Toth was t coach ing the Griffins Las week. He won t be coaching Giessen basketball either be cause he has been named head coach of the first division Gissen mtg 1846 basketball team "1 would have been out there coaching the Gies san High school football and basketball teams again this year if the Chance to coach the German Basket Ball team had l come up told said tuesday. And i would have taken my lumps 1 have been very fortunate to have had some very talented ath letes Here in Gissen the past three told added have heard the talk Over the Pas three years about How big Gissen was and How Small our opponents were. But Wiessen is not that big a High school. This year we Are under 380 Stu dents and we never have been bigger than 400. We Are Biger than some schools we be played but we also have played some our size or slightly Digger. I did thave anything to do with the scheduling but we always Drew a Tough opponent like Augsburg or Munich the first or second games we played each year. Week the Spain teams finally making their debuts there Are 23 games on the list. Most of the tames Darenon conference but the aaa Italy . And Spain teams will be facing league opponents. Only the Croughton London game was Unn ported. Then were a few instances reported where visiting coaches did t Supply the Home people Sta Wistica matter. The Best Way to get better stones is Mohave belter information coaches should consult with each other after the games. The first players of the week Are Nurnberg s Chris person on offence and Patch s Jarrod Hill on defense. Quarterback person rushed for 110 Yards and three touchdowns and passed for 112 More Yards to highlight the eagles Victory Over Giessen and line Backer Hill was credited with 10 tackles two interceptions and a sack in the panthers Conquest of Munich id ont know the Mannheim High school ath Lete who wrote the letter to the editor about High school varsity letters for non High school competitors that appeared in sunday s paper but the writer hit the Nail on the head. I realize the swimmers and baseball players Are dedicated athletes the student athlete wrote but they Don t deserve the letters Are they wearing the school colors holding up school Honor or even promoting school Pride these people Are competing for a Community team and arc not even sponsored by the school. I assume the Only reason they qualify in Dodds eyes for the letters is that they attend Dodd schools and Are he continued As a varsity athlete 1 believe that All students who have Ever lettered in a sport should realize that this action to award these let ters would be in reality a method of devaluing the varsity and Junior varsity letters. Again i do not mean to say these students arc not Good athletes. I am simply saying they do not deserve school letters unless they compete in school 1 had t really contemplated getting into the Issue so soon this year if at All but the writer had some interesting Points. That letter was written last april amid Alt the juror that arose Over the awarding of idlers to the Fesl competitors and the mention of the possibility of baseball and softball players receiving similar recognition. Since then that recognition has be come reality. In my original column last March i said that the varsity Leller in Dodds has been that aisle la obviously shared my opinion. So did virtually every administrator principal and coach with whom i have spoken concerning the awarding of the letters. Only the Mannheim student deemed it fitting to Lake pen in hand. It is a shame i remarks could t have been primed when they were More timely but there was considerable delay in getting any response from Dodds officials to an is Quarry. The stars and stripes letters department checked with the writer to Sec if the Limer had been published elsewhere and was informed that in had t been. Then a copy of the letter was sent to Dodds Germany Headquarters for possible comment after a Long delay from april to August and considerable prodding officials in Wiesbaden in mid August declined to comment recommending in Stead Hal the letter be forwarded to John Stremple director department of defense dependent schools in Washington for his comments. Sir ample s reply was quite prompt. He lauded the athlete for expressing his opinion and explained ".,. Dodds gave careful consideration to the decision to allow students to attain recognition for sports activities offered outside the regular school athletic program. The decision was based on my belief that Dodds should cooperate with the Mili tary commands whenever possible to enhance the Quality of life for military dependents overseas As a former coach i understand the obligation to protect the letter awarding program. 1 reviewed he standards established by the european forces swim league and found them to be of High Quality. 1 became convinced that with some oversight by school officials there is a High probability that Quality program will be it is indeed difficult for me As a sports writer to comprehend How a former High school coach could recognize the responsibility of protecting the letter awarding program and not feel thai an outside project which runs during the school year would be harmful to that shoo re sports program. Some of his belter athletes might opt for the outside activity and his team and other teams at the school could be adversely affected. I would almost Wager my salary that in his capacity As superintendent of the Fresno calif., school system str Rupli never would have permitted outsiders to infringe upon his territory. There was one other letter 10 the editor concern ing youth activity baseball activities that would make me have qualms about giving varsity letters to baseball and softball competitors it concerned to Ball Competition but it could apply to other baseball and softball programs. The writer was upset because coaches were smoking in the dugouts and on the Field. Nearly 20 years ago 1 remember complaining about the same things when my youngsters were occupied on All three Levels. If the coaches have to have a cigarette so badly and can t practice self discipline for even a Little while they really can t be too interested in running a disciplined program can they High school running Back makes it look like a replay Thermopolis Wyo. A Rice Vancleeve likes his hot Springs county High school football team to pass but just about every time tailback Ron Hayes got the bail on first Down he ran through Kemmerer s defense Tor a touch Down. We went into Thi game with the idea of passing said Vancleeve we never got to have a second Down because he kept scaring touchdowns. After his first six carries he had four by the end of Friday s game Hayes had amassed 305 Rushing Yards and six touchdowns on is carries to go along with the 60 Yards he accumulated on pull returns 50 Yards on Kukoff returns and 25 Yards and one touchdown on a pass interception u hot Springs ripped kcmmcrcr49-z0. He missed one be did t keep his seeing As Hayes did generate 440 Yards in Ali purpose yardage and average47 Yards on his punts in less than three quarters of play that he lost his concentration on pats is forgivable though. It was just that things clicked said Hayes. It sure was t in my game plan to do that but the offensive line opened up a big Hole every time they threw a while the numbers Are impressive on their own Vancleeve was particularly impressed by the Way Hayes churned out the yardage. I be seen people with that Many Yards before and that Many touchdowns bul not in 15 carries the coach said. He did t carry the Ball that much to get that Many Yards and
