European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 3, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday january 1989 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers i am a Volunteer for a run away hot last night a Cal came in that i will never forget. An 8-year-old girl called an talked to one of the women on duty. As a trainee i was Monitor ing the Call. This Small soft voice said Iam running away from Home be cause no one believes me when have stomach she had a Dollar in her pocket and was Call ing from a k Mart. The hot line Volunteer gave our usual warning about the dangers of living on the streets with no food Shel Ter or clothes. The warning however did not have the same chilling effect on this child that it usually has on teen agers. The Little girl said she could not go Back Home be cause neither her Mother her teacher nor her doctor believe her when she says her stomach hurts. In fact the doctor had said she was in perfect health. Her Mother instructed the teacher and school nurse not Socall her at work anymore because she would no longer come to school to get her child. After about a half hour the Volunteer got the child to Tell her something that explained the stomach aches. She said her daddy would make her do bad things a night when he tucked her into bed. She described How he would take his underwear off and have her make him feel this was so disturbing that the Volunteer decide she needed help. She told the child she was putting her on hold and went to get assistance. I then heard the frightened child hang up. We had lost her. I was sick at heart angry and frustrated. The Volunteer had gotten the child to Tell her that terrible secret but she had not gotten the child s name or City. Please i beg you parents teachers and doctors out there. Listen to the children. Not just what they say but what they feel. Tension and fear in children can cause the same effects As in adults stomach or Chest pains rashes and headaches. All i can think of is that Small scared 8-year-old child sleeping on the streets or Back Home with a father who will continue to abuse her and put her through the hell of fear and helpless Ness. I Pray that this letter will help that Little girl or another child who is living a similar Nightmare. Troubled in Texas dear Texas and i Pray that your letter will Wake of some of those folks who Are too naive or too trusting to recognize the signs of child abuse. This crime against these helpless youngsters can ruin them for life. Please read this letter again and pay attention to what this child i saving. Dear Ann Landers i was surprised at your priggish narrow minded c9ndemnation of naughty checks. I think they Are hilarious perfect for paying Bills when i am being ripped off by the Telephone company Utility company Etc. I am enclosing a few and i dare you to print this letter after you be seen them. H p Torrance Calir dear . After seeing the checks i can Tell you that they Are even More vulgar than i thought. Anyone who would use them is a world class Slob. If you want to express you displeasure with the phone or Utility companies drop a note to the chief Honcho and spare the employees those crude and far from funny bathroom scenes. Los Angeles times syndicated columnist Lam ers welcomes your letters. You can write to her in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Forces writer warns of rental misunderstandings planning to live on the Economy during your assignment in Germany do you want to learn the language and the customs of your Host nation an make the most of the time you will be in Europe my husband and i answered yes to both of the above questions and started looking for the perfect German House for us. The housing referral office had no three bedroom Homes in its listings so we consulted a German realtor and looked at approximately 30 Homes. After finding nothing in our Price Range that we liked we went to a second realty com Pany. We found the House we had envisioned almost immediately and met with the landlord to draw up a contract. The owner of the House told us that Al window coverings would stay in the House and be included in the rent. There would be no extra charge. This included custom made full length drapes for the living and dining rooms and curtain for the Kitchen pantry Bath and three bedrooms. I asked specifically about the dining and living room drapes and was assured by the realtor they would stay because they were made for the House. In the rental contract the owner asked that we list the Kitchen curtains and those in one of the bedroom so we did. Within the following two weeks our household goods were delivered. After much hard work and lots of arranging and re arranging we could finally stand Back and say everything was perfect. We loved the House and we were very Happy living in had even hired the Landlady s Mother to be our cleaning woman which was convenient because shelved in our Village. One Day my husband mentioned a set of custom made curtains we had used in another House and the fact that he was particularly fond of them. While hews at work i decided to change the curtains on the front window in the dining room As a Surprise for him. They blended beautifully with the ones cover ing the door to the Terrace. When my husband came Home he was delighted with the change. Now we Felt our Home was even More special and we Felt goo that we were settled into it. A Nice Story with a Happy ending right i thoughts. When the cleaning woman came the next week to clean she walked into the dining room gasped and questioned me As to Why the curtains were tried to explain to her that we particularly liked these curtains and wanted to hang them Intlehouse. She said we must talk with her daughter about the matter. When we did this her daughter said of i never meant to leave the curtains in the House but if you want to keep them you can Purchase them for 1,000marks." we explained to her that it was our under standing that they were included in the rent. We there Are Many i have been stationed in England since february1986. I have read the complaints in the stars and stripes with interest but the response Given by Wil Liam Green on the fights and property damage done at Rock n Roll bars seems to me to be absurd. First of All i would like to know what kind of Rock n Roll bars he has been in. In Case he was t aware of it there Are several kinds of Rock n Roll. There is acid Rock hard Rock soul Rock disco and the Good old fashioned Rock n Roll of the 50s. The latter is what i a proud to play As a do to categorize All Rock n Roll bars As a place where fights and property damage Hap pen every time is simply absurd. Yes there Are going to be arguments and misunderstandings on any Given night no matter what kind of music is being played but to say it s going to happen told her we would talk about it and get Back to her. Feeling that perhaps the realtor could clarify the situation we called to set up a meeting at her office with the owner of the House. At the meeting she too said the curtains were never a part of the rental contract. She said All negotiations had been carried out in German and apparently we had Misander what a disappointment. Since we Felt that 1,000 Marks was too expensive for the remaining two sets of curtains there was no recourse except for the Landlady to remove the from the House. She did this one week before Christmas which i will always feel was a cruel an unusual move on her part. I again went to the realtor s office and said Idin t understand what had gone wrong in the Situa Tion. She said she really could t remember what had been said about the curtains so i refreshed her memory and reminded her she had told me the curtains stayed in the House. I did t ask her Why she had sided with the Landlady if she honestly could remember. She said of just forget about it and go something Over the windows for Christmas and then later you can get some new was this woman a relative of the infamous Scrooge i would bet Money on it i even checked behind he desk to see if perhaps there were bundles of switches waiting to be passed out for the Holiday. Live and learn my Mother always says. We always learn from our i would like to share with you what i think i have Learned from this mistake. When the Landlady came to remove the curtain from the House we asked her to sign a statement we had prepared in German and English saying that any remaining property of hers in the House on that Date stayed As Long As we continue to rent the signed the statement. We also prepared a letter to document the misunderstanding for the hous ing referral office and gave her a copy of the letter. We know now to be very specific when drawing Upan Economy housing contract. If you plan to write such a contract remember to omit nothing which could later be questionable. If you Are not fluent in German request that an interpreter be present when the contract is signed. If the terms of the c9ntract have been carefully stated and the responsibilities of both the owner and the tenant Are in writing you should have a pleasant experience living in your Host nation. We Are hopeful that we can look Forward to the same for the duration of our stay. Name withheld we Brucken West Germany of Rock do says every time is out of line. No matter what kind of music is being played i people Are drinking they sometimes get Over enthusiasm tic about their views. This is where the problems begin not the music. So i suggest to this writer that he broaden his Hori Zons and visit More types of Rock n Roll bars. It s time to Wake up and smell the roses. Staff sgt. Steven p.
