European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 8, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers every so often adults suffer anxiety attacks and children Are needlessly frightened out of their wits by some Weirdo prediction that on a certain Day the world is coming to an end. People actually quit their jobs sell their houses and belongings and wait for the Earth to Swallow them up. When it does t Hap pen you hear the same excuses god changed his mind. Even the Bible says no one knows what Day or what hour the world is going to end. The thing everyone seems to forget is that every minute of every hour of every Day the world comes to an end for somebody. We Are All going to die sooner or later. It could be today in a car Accident or a fall Down the stairs. Heart attacks strike suddenly. Dis eases claim victims. There Are fires floods and Torna does enough tragedy to go around. And in the end of course for those who escape there is death from old age. No matter How healthy we Are eventually our parts Wear out. So what s the big Deal the message is live every Day As if it were your last. Don t put off the pleasures and Joys for another it s always later than you think. Philosopher in Michigan dear Phil you be packed a lot of common sense into a Short essay. Thanks from All of us. We can t be reminded too often to savor the moment. Dean Ann Landers in the last several months my husband and i have taken our two children Ages 7 and 4, to two movies rated pm. We were furious when we heard four lettered words and cursing in both movies. It was a disgrace Why in the world would such language be used in film for children i m sure we Aren t the Only parents who Are outraged by the filth our youngsters Are exposed to in these movies. Please Ann Tell me what can be done Short of boycotting the movies altogether dear . I be had letters from a great Many parents in the past several years and they All have the same complaint. What Many people do not understand is that a pm rating stands for parental this Means the movie contains material that some parents will find objectionable and that they should decide whether or not they want their children to see the movie. You should take your children to Only those movies that Are rated dear Ann Landers de and i plan to be married next year. I have asked my Only sister to be Matron of Honor. She said yes and then we began to talk about the wedding. Mary has an 8-year-old son who is immature and spoiled. When she asked if i planned to have him be the ring bearer i said no i had in minded s Nephew. Mary became extremely upset and said that if i did t ask Michael he would be terribly Hurt and she could t take that insult lying Down. After a lot of pleasant conversation Mary said unless i included her son As ring bearer she could not be my Matron of Honor. De says he will do anything i want. I Don t like ultimatums Ann but i hate to have my sister mad at me. Please advise a mess in East Meadow dear . Your sister had no right to Lay this on you. If you Don t want her son to be the ring bearer Tell her you have made other plans. And Happy Orange blossoms dear no matter what. Don t let this ruin your Day. Letters writer complains about cleaning contract i am appalled about the cleaning contract. The resident of the quarters cleans the stove refrigerator bathroom sweeps the floor some of us even mop. A few of us paint the Walls. So what is left for the cleaning team the windows and waxing the floors. I cannot believe the army pays 800 Marks per apart ment for this with the budget As it is. The army is paying More than a family paid a cleaning team if they just moved out. It Cost 200-300 Marks for them to do everything. Shyrl peer Sermersheim West Germany editor s note it. Col. Richard l. Slinkard Deputy Community commander Karlsruhe military Community replies cleaning by contract of government owned and leased family housing quarters is an initiative implemented in 1987. Undoubtedly it has been and continues to be a topic for discussion not least because of its seemingly High Cost. The Cost to the . Army for this program is offset by the savings in temporary lodging allowance la which was previously paid for a 10-Day period to each Soldier terminating quarters. The Soldier was entitled to a daily allowance for accommodation and meals expenses for each dependent and him herself. The daily allowance for a Soldier with three dependents is presently $109.50. Over a 10-Day period this amounts to $1,095. Contract cleaning of the Soldier s quarters today in the Karlsruhe Community costs an average of $315. Under the contract cleaning program the usar eur wide average number of Days that la is paid to outgoing families has steadily fallen to its present level of less than two Days per family. A Little simple mathematics will show that the . Government is saving Money. A breakout is Given below if we were to pay la for 10 Days it would Cost $1,095. The average apartment cleaning Cost is $315. Add to that la for two Days $219, for a total of $534. If you subtract the $534 from the $1,095, you still have. A savings of $561 to the government. The writer implied that quarters Are left so clean that a cleaning team need Only clean the windows and Wax the floors. This would be an Ideal situation. Indeed were this the Case the contractor s Price would be considerably less than $315. Realistically the following list details work the contract cleaner must perform when an apartment is vacant mop and Wax All wooden and linoleum floors mop tiled bathroom floor vacuum and shampoo rugs Wash hand basins w.c., Bathtub Shower including removal of non excessive Calcium build up Wash All Kitchen bathroom and bedroom closets inside and outside Wash All baseboards and radiators remove cobwebs Wash Down All Walls and the ceiling clean appliances inside and outside clean Light fixtures and globes clean bedsprings upholstery windows and frames inside and outside and Fly screens Wash All doors and frames dust and polish All wooden furniture and replace All furniture in its original position after cleaning. The contractor is not expected to clean excess dirt or Marks on any in the apartment which a reasonable House owner occupant can be expected to remove on a regular basis i.e., grease buildup in oven Burnt on food spillage in fridge Etc. Dirt or Marks in excessive Quanti ties must be removed by occupants. The writer states that a few people paint the Walls when terminating quarters. This is an occupant responsibility when the Walls Are marked or damaged beyond fair Wear and tear. Prices for cleaning apartments in the Karlsruhe Community Range from $300 for a one bedroom apartment to $700 for a single House with basement and garage. The prices Are comparatively higher than in the Heidel Berg or Mannheim communities. This is due to the sup ply and demand Rule of business. There Are too few cleaning companies in the Karlsruhe area Large enough to provide the services required under such a demanding contract. Nonetheless la savings More than offset the prices charged by the contractor. We Trust the aforementioned explanation will con Vince the writer and readers that congressionally approved funds for contract cleaning Are being used in an acceptable manner. Gis urged to voice pay raise concerns i read the five letters concerning the proposed con Gressional pay raise and can agree in part with All of them. For them to write to you to Call an alarm to the Public is justifiable. But How much farther will these people and the rest of the readers of this newspaper go to let our congressional officials and ultimately the president elect know our disdain for this outrageous commission report. We the military have taken it on the Chin for a Long time. We still Haven t Learned the hard reality of our not registering to vote or even voting for these people who Call themselves Public servants and they know it. The military has a strength of Over 2 million and i would venture to say that at least half did t Register or vote in the last election. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. There is something you can do in this matter. You can spend about $2 in Stamps and envelopes and about one hour of your spare time and write to your specific legislative officials plus a letter to the presi Dent and president elect. Let them know How you feel about this totally unacceptable proposal. You have until february to get off your Duff or do nothing and Hope the president will overrule this on his own. I m not willing to take that Chance. If you Don t reply that sends a further message that we like what we get for a pay raise and it s of for them to increase theirs by 50 percent. Lastly for those who Don t know our dear elected officials Start getting their pension for working Only eight years not including the president who Only has to go four years. Some of these Guys have collected Over $1 million since their retirement and it has t been 20 or 30 years since they retired either. We and that includes the military and All Federal workers must stand up and be counted or we will continue to be the whipping boys when it comes to the budget and pay raises.
