European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 9, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 flight 103 from Page 10 civilians and their dependents Are expendable this is the Only apparent conclusion that can be drawn. The idea of my wife and daughter being regarded by the administration As potential Cannon fodder for terrorist attacks does not hearted me. We Are continually warned to take whatever daily precautions Are available against terrorism during our stay Here. How Are we to feel now when our own government publicly refuses to comply with the same directives that we Are urged to take. No one including myself at this time is saying that this disaster was preventable. That is now for experts in Airport Security to surmise. What i am asking though is Why Are we regarded in such a lowly manner by the same government that we have taken an oath to uphold and defend this Type of regard makes that oath difficult to understand and justify. Thomas o. Dauer Frankfurt West Germany i have never written a letter to a paper before and we Are hoping you will print this. To Secretary of state George Shultz and the Ameri can government How in god s name can you live with yourselves when Are we americans going to Wake up How Many innocent killings of american lives must we tolerate before something is done my husband and i read in the stars and stripes about pan am flight 103 having been bombed. We cried for All those innocent lives lost for nothing and the anguish their families Are feeling. Every time we try to Stop a maniac organization from doing something the american people pay for it dearly with our lives. We agreed with Shultz about not letting Yasser Arafat speak to the United nations but deep Down we knew that a terrorist group would get Back at us with their maniac ways. They always do. Yet we sit and let our pe9ple be massacred. Why because we Are a peace keeping people Bull when is the killing of innocent americans going to Stop when there Are none of us left to kill Why can t we find the maniacs who do these things and prosecute them even if it has to be obtained by under the table methods they Are murderers Aren t they Aren t murderers supposed to be prosecuted where is Justice i m an american and proud of it and would gladly die for my country to protect and defend it. But for god s Sake not like those poor people on flight 103. Name withheld Schwabish ground West Germany it s too bad that we have to put up with terrorist Sand the terrible things they do to All of us. If this group the guardians of the islamic revolution is responsible for the Downing of flight 103, what s going to happen to them they make a threat follow through with it and get lots of Media nothing gets done about it speaking of coverage the students from Syracuse got lots of it i feel for those students and All of the people involved but what about the soldiers according to an news there were 49 soldiers and their families on that flight those students were mentioned repeatedly during the three or so hours of news that i watched. The civilian news services made mention of service members twice does t anyone care about them or us i can definitely give an credit for one thing when something happens to soldiers at least we get decent coverage. We get Good coverage because we care. The Only time civilians care about us is when someone Breaks in America s Back door. Then we had better be ready to give our lives in their defense what about the soldiers name withheld Kirch cons West Germany exploring the alternatives to cafes i would like to respond to the individual who commented on the Quality or Lack thereof offered by cafes. This is no excuse but i feel that we Are entirely too dependent on the old cafes company store. Because of this i do exactly what i do in the states i shop around. How do you do that you ask considering the Exchange rate is so hard on us i use a variety of mail order cafes the Economy and the commissary service to help me out of the All too familiar Money situation we All fac being overseas. First i must add that mail order is not difficult. The Good old Sears and Penney s Cata logs Are usually available at your base Library along with order Blanks and explicit information on How to receive your products through the Apo the fastest easiest and cheapest Way. If you talk to some of your friends you will probably find that they have Cata logs from some of your favorite stores at Home. Cafes is your second option one i m sure most of us have explored. The Good thing about cafes is that if you Ever Purchase something that is not satisfactory 100 per cent you can take it Back for Exchange or your Money Back. If you stand firm they will abide by their satisfaction or your Money Back claim. This is True in All cafes contract stores too. Additionally if you Check out the Stock at a time when it in t a Peak shopping hour you will see the Odd bargain. The Economy is expensive but often you forget to look at it As an option. For us Here at upper Heyford we have a really difficult time getting Good produce at a reasonable Price Here on base. Recently a head of iceberg lettuce about the size of a Large Orange Cost $ 1.81 at the commissary. The local vegetable Market sold a comparable product but slightly bigger and of better Quality for 58 Pence. That is roughly half the Price of the commissary. To make it better you get out a bit More too this Way. The last place to look is the Good old commissary. De spite the problems associated with the vegetable counter the commissary has some pretty Good deals on things you might normally buy at cafes. One last thing to consider if you re willing to take the time is using coupons. This is one More Little Way of extend ing even further that already overstretched Dollar. I m not saying it s necessarily easy but if you explore the alternatives you really can save a Little and get the product you want at a reasonable Price. Senior airman Anne m. Higby upper Heyford England an complimented on Holiday sports i would like to compliment the armed forces network for its outstanding new year s sports Gram. Many people forget that the target audience for an television and radio is our Young soldiers and airmen. Since Many of these Young people identify with a College or professional team the program brings them a Little taste of Home and entertain ment. As a senior Leader stationed in Frankfurt i am concerned where my soldiers spend their new year s weekend. I appreciate the sports menu that an has offered to allow the Soldier and airmen to spend this weekend in a Safe enjoyable atmosphere sgt. Maj. . Arnold Frankfurt West Germany dear Ann Landers i am writing because someone has to bring this to the attention of the general Public. Who Bette than you i am a heterosexual woman divorced mid-40s, White upper Middle class living a modestly fast lifestyle not unlike Many of my friends. I carefully screen the four or five bed partners that i May have in a year and want nothing to do with drugs or drug users or men i think Are promiscuous or bisexual. Sometimes i insist on condoms and sometimes i Don t. Last week i got the news. I tested positive for the aids virus. Stunned you d better believe it. I too thought aids was a Gay Man s disease. I now know that it is a disease that knows no barriers. It could happen to your daughter your son your Best Friend or your sister. Please urge your readers before they get caught like me to use condoms at All times. They Aren t 100 per cent Protection but 90 percent is a lot better than Zero. Believe me Ann i am taking no chances of infecting anyone. Now that i know my Days Are numbered i m trying to cram in All the living i can while i am still in Good condition. I am taking better care of myself than i Ever have before eating nourishing food and getting plenty of rest. Meanwhile i am keeping my problems to myself and confiding in a Small Circle of friends. What can your readers do they can test anonymously if they think there is an outside Chance that they have been infected. They can donate Money to further aids research. They can educate the apathetic heterosexuals who think it can t happen to them. If it happened to me it can happen to anybody. . Your readers will probably think this letter is a Plant written by a Gay male in order to get support. How i wish it were unfortunately for me the Story have just told you is True and i am his positive in chicag Odear Friend with All you have on your mind it was wonderful of you to take the time and trouble to write. People need to know that aids is not a disease that Only drug users and homosexuals get. Straight people can get it Luck and god bless. Dear Ann Landers you be often Given courage to people who have been ridiculed and i m hoping that you will do the same for us unless of course you think we re crazy too. My husband and i Are in our late 30s, with two grown children. When our older son graduated from nigh school we realized How empty our Home was about to become. We decided to try for another child. I m pregnant and thrilled our kids think it s wonderful. But you would not believe what our friends Are saying. Just this week i heard if he were my husband i d kill if it were me i d jump off a Why in the world did t one of you get fixed people just Don t want to believe that this child was planned. While we Don t feel that we Are obligated to explain our decision to anyone we Are unhappy wit the comments. Why can t people just smile and say congratulations the negative comments Hurt. Rejuvenated in Pittsburgh dear Pitts if no one else says congratulations i m saying it. Ignore the clods. It could be that the women Are envious and the men Are feeling inferior. You will soon discover that the late dividend often turns out to be the most rewarding.
