The National aeronautics and space administration thursday announced that Ulf d. Me bold 47, of the european space Agency and Roger k. Crouch of Nasa have been chosen for training to perform materials science experiments on the International microgravity Labo-Ratory-1 Mission scheduled for april 1991. Nasa also announced that it has approved the nomination by Canada of two specialists who will train to perform life sciences experiments on the Mission. The nominated Crew members Are  l. Bondar 43, and or. Kenneth Money 53. After a training period one of the canadians will be selected to Fly on the mis Sion to perform the biological experiments and either me bold or Crouch will be selected to perform the material science experiments on the Mission. The Mission is the first of a planned series of flights that will investigate the use of weightlessness in scientific experiments. The experiments will be con ducted in a module called the space lab carried into orbit in the cargo Bay of the space shuttle Columbia. The Mission i scheduled to last about nine Days. In addition to the specialists Nas Asaid the Mission Crew will include five members of the . Astronaut corps. The first ill Mission will be followed every 17 to 25 months with additional flights using a module and Experiment facilities built by ., european Ca Nadian and japanese organizations. The purpose of the Mission series is to investigate the unique effects of weightless Ness on biological and manufacturing processes. Me bold flew on spacelab-1, a 10-Dayspace shuttle flight in 1983. Berlin Parkin and Lackner face maximum penalties of 185 years in prison and fines of $5.5 million if convicted. Tel Edyne electronics face a Fine of $6.5million if convicted. The other men face lesser sentences if they Are found guilty. Lawyers for Tel Edyne electronics said their client i innocent of conspiracy and knew nothing of any deals Between private consultants and government employees. Attorneys for Parkin also have said their client did nothing wrong in running his business. In presenting its Case the government is apparently planning to use the testimony of Michael Savaides a former employee of Tel Edyne electronics who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery. He is cooperating with prosecutors. After the indictment was made Public the defens department suspended Berlin without pay and barred Tel Edyne electronics from doing business with the government. The Pentagon also suspended the Hazeltine  two of its former executives who have pleaded guilty in the Case. Hazeltine based in Greenlawn n.y., is a subsidiary of the Emerson electric co. Inc. The suspension of contracting rights applies Only to Hazeltine and not toothed units of Emerson. Before the first indictments were unveiled Hazel Tine agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United states conversion of government property an making false statements to the government. Affidavits released two weeks ago suggest that Hazeltine hired Parkin to obtain inside information from Pentagon employees that would allow the company to compete for a $15.9 million contract for electronic testing gear for an aircraft identification system.
