Every Day it is a common occur Ance to judge when to leave the office based on whether a person will have to stand outside for Flag Call. How can we instill Pride in our subordinates if we do not set the example for them to follow just recently a Captain was Given a do form 1408 armed forces traffic ticket for failure to exit his vehicle and Render Honor to our nation s Flag. The1408 was processed through channels and the Captain was counselled by a first lieutenant. My question is Isit possible for a subordinate to counsel a Superior in regards to performance or any violations incurred bythe Superior especially when the subordinate does not hold position Over the Superior i am not trying to wave the Flag in anyone s face Buti Don t feel that one should base leaving the office on Flag Call. This includes standing inside the building waiting for Flag Call to Start and finish before walking outside. In my opinion to stand outside to pay respect to our Flag is a Small inconvenience compared to those who have Given their lives to preserve our Freedom an insure our Flag can Fly every Day. I am convinced that pos would be quite appalled to think one does twant to see old glory coming Down for the night especially when they Haven t seen it in years one More question if we Don t respect our Flag Why Are we Here staff sgt. Ronald de Yonker Vaihinger West Germany editor s note col. Terry l. Wagner Deputy Community commander Stuttgart military Community replies thank you for your letter expressing concern Over the proper rendering of courtesies to the colors by individuals during Retreat. Army regulations 600-20 and 600-25 describe the appropriate actions to be taken by military personnel in uniform during Retreat. Although the lowering of the colors during Retreat signifies the Normal end of the duty Day on military installations this ceremony is not meant to be a starting signal for a dash from work areas. Certainly waiting in doorways by individuals until the Retreat ceremony is Complete so that courtesies need not be Given is not setting the example and is Akin to punching the clock. The Reader is Correct in his expectation that military professionals ought not hide from the Flag but be Lead ers and openly demonstrate the respect for the Flag and what it represents. Unfortunately not All individuals have this same sense of Pride or professionalism. How Ever such action though Unmil itary is not in violation of any regulation. As to the writer s question whether a Junior officer in a command position can counsel members of his com Mand senior to him the answer is yes but diplomatically. Such anomalies can occur in Headquarters companies where unit staff officers frequently outrank the company commander. The requirement to perform such counsel ing is what makes this Type of command one of the toughest in the army. In most cases though the Inci Dent should be referred to the officer s supervisor for Resolution. We encourage the writer to maintain and Demon Strates his ideals and serve As a Model for others regardless of rank. Reader favors Tough stand with Libya there can be no doubt that Libya does indeed pos sess and operate a chemical weapons Plant. It is Ludi Crous to believe that the Plant is Only a pharmaceutical factory. How Many factories Are surrounded by protective anti aircraft defences the fact that these defens sexist can Only Lead one to believe that the Plant is less than tensions Between the United states and Libya have obviously risen in the past weeks. Why then with . Forces in a state of heightened Alert would two Libya fighter jets threaten . Naval forces by flying directly at the Carrier John f. Kennedy i applaud the defensive actions taken by f-14 tomcats when con fronted by the libyan jets. The construction of a chemical weapons Plant an the Downing of these two hostile libyan jets in International Waters have once again brought Libya and it Leader Qadhafi into the world scene. The last time Libya was in the news was when it was linked to terrorist bombings that resulted in numerous american deaths. In response to those bombings the United states bombed terrorist Camps in Libya. It would see that Libya would not provoke the United states again but terrorists Are cowardly and irrational. The United states will no longer offer a weak response when dealing with these fanatical terrorists. Terrorists do not respect weakness. They Only respect strength. They Only understand strength. Under president Reagan the United states responded More strongly with terrorists. Do you remember Grenada How Many Oil rigs had to be destroyed be fore Iran got the idea the United states does and should continue to Deal from a position of this show of strength against Libya and other terrorists i am proud to an american.
