European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 1, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers my husband and i Are both in our 30s. We wanted to Start a family right away and i am now pregnant. I have heard so Many horror stories about childbirth that i m terrified. Some of my friends have gone into great detail about the labor pains and what a Terri ble time they had. This has not Only taken the excitement out of being pregnant it has scared me out of my wits. I know labor is not exactly a picnic but i never dreamed it was so excruciating. Thank you Ann for any help you can give me. I desperately need a better attitude than i have right now. . In Greensboro . Anyone who would describe the tortures of childbirth to a woman who is expecting her first baby is no Friend. True labor is not exactly a Day at the Beach but no two deliveries Are alike. Yon might have a cinch. Also Many women will Tell you that the thrill of bringing anew life into the world blocks out the memory of pain. Discuss your fears with your obstetrician and ask about the new techniques for making childbirth easier. He or she will give you the reassurance you need. An please go Back and reread the first sentence of my advice. No truer words were Ever spoken. Dear Ann Landers recently you published a test for compulsive gamblers. I took the test and have no problem. Last september a horse race track opened near 9ur Home. I love to go to the races and will go alone if i can t get anyone to go with me. I study the publications and have been pretty Good at selecting winners. The most that i have Ever lost in a single Day is $25, which is not serious for me. On the other hand my husband drinks Hunts and fishes three weekends out of four All year round. These weekends Cost Between $50 and $75. We both work full time and make about the same Money. I have been spending weekends alone for nearly 10 years and now that i have found something i enjoy everyone seems to think i have a problem. I would like your views on this. Win place and show in of City dear of since you enjoy going to the track and you put a ceiling on your losses i see no reason for your husband or anyone else to criticize you. But watch it dear. Gambling has an insidious Way of getting into you blood. Unless you Are Well disciplined you could find yourself in Over your head. The next letter was in the same Batch As yours. Dear Ann Landers that letter you printed from a compulsive Gambler got me an awful lot of unwanted attention. The Signa Ture of the writer was Sam Ever since that letter appeared in the paper my phone has t stopped ringing. Dozens of friends and relatives have called to Oner help. They All said Sam i did t know you were a compulsive Why did t you at least print the name of the City do you realize How Many people in the country could be Sam g."? you owe an apology to All of us. Sam Grossman Canoga Park Calif. Dear or. Grossman i m terribly sorry if that letter created a problem for you. So far i Haven t heard from any other Sam is but it s Early yet. Let this be a Blanket apology to All who May have been embarrassed. Reader fed up with dependent Label i be read with interest the letters from other dependent wives. We arrived in Germany recently and i d forgotten How chauvinistic military terminology can be. The last four years have been spent away from an army base in a typical midwestern town on an Roth assignment. Wisconsin is a joint property state All assets and debts Are shared equally Between spouses. The tainted memories Are again resurfacing. Ten years ago i arrived in Europe single As a gs-9 working for Dodds. I met and married a service Man then an o-2. Even though i continued to work for Dodds my gs-9 id was taken away and re placed with a dependent id. My car registered to me was automatically shifted to my husband s name. When we tried to have my personal items shipped Over from my Parent s Home our request was denied. I was considered an acquired dependent. My husband acquired me on his tour in Europe. I then knew what it must feel like to be considered a concubine maybe the military should change the name de pendent to Janna Dykstra Smith Neu him West Germany editor s note Howard Hammond chief personnel services Branch personnel actions div personnel services support directorate 1st personnel come he Usa eur replies beginning with the department of defense directive governing the Issue of id cards and reiterated in the uniformed service regulations that concern id card Issue a dependent is defined As an individual who because of relationship to a military sponsor is entitled to uniformed services privileges and benefits. The question of financial dependence arises Only in the Case of parents or parents in Law for whom the Mili tary member is requesting dependency. Therefore in id card jargon the term dependent although generally misunderstood correctly identifies those family members who Are dependent on a military sponsor for those benefits. With the exception of the personnel Community which deals with id cards and entitlement to benefits and the medical Community which refers to a dependent As a beneficiary the official army policy is that dependents Are referred to As family members. The problems encountered by the writer 10 years ago were corrected by Usa eur in 1982. Since that time an employee in a situation similar to the writer s receives a dual status id card indicating both the Mili tary member and the overseas employee As sponsors. This allows the employee to open or continue Bank accounts Register an automobile maintain a App with cafes Etc. However upon return to the Continental United states the employee must obtain a new dependent id card showing Only the military member As the sponsor because civilian employees Are not entitled to privileges and benefits in the Continental United states. Army Post office wraps up waste claim i be noted that several army operated Post offices in Germany provide free of charge wrapping paper and tape to their customers. I was told by a Post office employee that these items were obtained from the self service Supply store. If True what authorizes the Post office to give to the Public material obtained from appropriated funds i.e., paid for by american taxpayers ? i be always thought that material equipment and supplies obtained with appropriated funds were to be used strictly for official business Only. Sending a pack age to mom or Sis is not government business and i for one Don t want any part of my tax Dollar going toward that service. In the recent Holiday season i would t have been surprised if they had started giving away Christmas wrapping paper ribbons and bows. Ridiculous yes. But so Are the Brown package paper tape and dispensers. It s a definite topic for the fraud waste and abuse program. Name withheld Heidelberg West Germany editor s note William d.
