Dear friends a while Back a Reader asked me where the express Ion Southpaw came from. I said i did t know but i d ask. More than 10,000 people did know and they told me. Here s the answer from Bill Deane researcher at the National baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown,. Most baseball diamonds were built so the afternoon Sun did t bother the vision of the Batter or the spectators in the High priced seats. The result was that the Pitcher s left Arm pointed South. Southpaw was coined to describe the left handed Pitcher since the majority of pitchers Are right handed. The term was subsequently used to describe an lefty ballplayer or Boxer and finally any left handed person. Los Angeles times syndicated columnist Landers welcomes your letters. Ill Iii Iii Balw Liyi a Iii Uhi Pwu i in a i self fill the dedicated and the rank wearers this year s army theme is the year of the think this is a Well deserved theme because i have been privileged enough to have met and served with some of the Best. When a new recruit reports for Basic training thievery first thing he learns is to respect a non commissioned officer. Soldiers should never lose or forget that respect. We have All heard that a non commissioned officers the Backbone of the army. This has More truth in it than that there is communism in Russia. But for moment let s address a Small but Ever present group known As rank sergeants soldiers Don t need buddies with Stripe sin peace or War. In peace rank wearers make the unit Mission and morale suffer and thus create weak link sin the Chain. In War soldiers who do not respect their cos will not follow orders. Maybe if Lucky Only the Soldier s preparation for War will suffer. If we As soldiers Are not mentally physically or morally ready for Battle then we Are in the wrong business. We need to know where to turn for leadership. If someone has the rank of Corporal or higher that person had better know How to take charge an take care of his or her soldiers. If you Don t and have an i Don t care attitude then please get out of the army before a Good Soldier s career and maybe life Are wasted. If you have been designated a non commissioned officer Bear in mind that there is a serious responsibility that comes with it regardless of what your Job May be. This responsibility continues 24 hours a Day seven Days a week 365 Days a year. Simply because an no is off duty does t entitle him or her to be irresponsible. You never know at what hour a Soldier might have a situation that requires your immediate attention. What you do on and off duty is noticed and not forgotten. The burdens Are heavy but the payoff of seeing Soldier highly motivated professional and combat ready should be All the satisfaction an no desires. An no should be confident proud knowledgeable about his or her military occupational specially mos and Basic Soldier skills caring respectful to commissioned officers and most of All dedicated to the army and its Mission protecting our country. An no should not be a Power hungry monster either. If a Soldier is afraid to turn to his nco1c. Who can he turn to an no must know and understand his soldiers their goals and efforts. An no must support and explain the army s policy and no stands by his soldiers through Good and bad and leaves no question that he docs care. An a combust make on the spot corrections when it is Nec Essary. To the cos who know and live by the army Anco Creed this is a written Salute to you. To those Only wearing the rank i ask you to re evaluate you commitment. Don t let your soldiers Lack the leadership they deserve. Spec. James Fogleman shape Belgium testing urged for All Dodds teachers i read with amusement the article in which Dodd director John Stremple is portrayed As favouring competency testing for teachers seeking employment with Dodds but opposing the testing of currently employed teachers because it raises too much raises anxiety i suspect that a compelling reason i that the results could prove to be embarrassing for Dodds. But then again i suppose teachers could be come somewhat anxious if faced with the Prospect of having to take a test which might reveal less knowledge than that possessed by some of the students they Are supposed to teach. However i am not certain i understand Why we would insist that our children be taught by competent new teachers but allow for the possibility that they will be in the class of an unqualified teacher who i protected merely by virtue of the fact that he or she is already Here. Is Stremple employing orwellian like double speak name withheld Frankfurt West Germany editor s note John l. Stremple director Dodds Alexandria va., replies the department of defense dependents schools is implementing a mandatory competency testing Gram for All educator applicants. These tests Are intended to provide evidence in tin absence of the Opportunity for direct observation thai applicants possess the Basic skills and academic knowledge necessary to perform competently As Educa tors. They testify that individuals have attained a skill level in Reading writing and mathematics to permit them to operate competently in their designated roles. This is an important Factor As we predict which applicants have the potential for Success in a Dodds classroom. Once prospective applicants have attained the level of competence required by Dodds they will be fur ther evaluated on the basis of other information such As interviews current and past experiences Grade Point average and recommendations. Dodds will not use competency tests As the Evi Dence that currently employed teachers Are Able to perform competently As educators. These educators have already demonstrated their competence. With careful supervision and effective evaluation Dodds is Able to assure their continued Quality performance. Teacher competency tests will not guarantee Dodds a Good teacher. Many of the important characteristics of a Good teacher such As dedication Moti vation perseverance interpersonal skills sensitivity and integrity Are not measured. For this reason competency tests Are not the sole criterion in the decision process. Pen pals i would like to have pen pals. I like music sports travelling and nature. Hassan mrabet . 600 .
