European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 8, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Ffi./. V v by Kim Brizzolara new York times n the old Days i was very driven Jane Fonda said during a recent interview while in new York to promote her latest video Jane Fonda s Complete workout. Now i m striving hard to control compulsive it got less fun to be driven Fonda explained. Now i want to enjoy things More to add More a moderation to my at age 51, Fonda is in the latest stage of a Public evolution As she Calls it and she said this More easygoing attitude extended to All parts of her life but is particularly apparent in her philosophy of exercise. I m not As Macho As several years before she said. The first to introduce aerobics into the Home on video Fonda is credited with bringing exercise to a whole new segment of the population those who would never venture out to an exercise class. A Novice when she first started Fonda now admits that she knew very Little about aerobics few of us in her first video in 1982, she appeared barefooted which can cause injury to the feet and other parts of the body and was criticized for demonstrating exercises whose positions and intensity were potentially dangerous. The criticism spurred her to educate herself in the area of physiology. You learn from your mistakes Fonda said accepting some of the criticism with the aplomb of an old hand. Even in the three years since i did the last workout tape we be really Learned a lot. For example while higher intensity aerobics Are appropriate for some people and Fine to do it s better to not work out too hard and for a longer period of time. Hard and fast is not As effective As longer workouts in her new video program reflects this finding with exercises that Are less strenuous if not Overly cautious. The 65-minute tape includes 30 minutes of aerobics with half the on screen class members doing High Impact aerobics and half the class doing Low Impact aerobics so viewers can take their Choice. The new approach is a marked contrast to Fonda s earlier tapes which emphasized what Many have come to Call going for the Fonda denies having used this term As frequently As is attributed to her and denies Ever having said no pain no what has also evolved Over the years is an appreciation of her audience. What s exciting is that Many of these women realize for the first time that they re athletic Fonda said. I get hundreds of letters saying i thought i could never do this,1 and the motivation is not that they want to look better but that they want to feel better while the Complete workout program is slower and less physically challenging than her earlier works it is also More sophisticated. We use my workout studio like a Laboratory observing what is Good and what needs to be done Fonda said referring to the Public studio she opened in 1979. Fonda finds the use of interval training the latest trend in aerobics exercise especially interesting. You push up the level you re working at to get your pulse a Little higher for a few minutes she said and then bring it Down a Little. It s during that downward slope that you re metabolizing fat. You rest a Little at a lower level and then you go up the new video is also geared toward a wider audience with a Price tag of $29.98, about $10 less than her previous videos and includes options for viewers to intensify their program depending on their skill and experience. Fonda said the program is for beginners to advanced exercisers although longtime aerobics practitioners May find that it does not provide quite enough Challenge. Also the emphasis on choreography designed to alleviate boredom at times gets a bit Hokey for those seeking a More strenuous workout. Fonda s physical condition May give added Validity to her total fitness philosophy. She practices aerobics several times a week and jogs but her True love is biking. I live near the Beach and there s a 40-mile path there she noted i Bike As much As i As for diet she said she tries not to eat after 5 . And consumes Quantity but Good in the old Days she said we would have starved and not realized our body was using during lunch she ate a salad refused the veal entree instead munching on several Jane Fonda s new exercise tape emphasizes her new philosophy of moderation. Slices of wheat bread and drank two Beers. It s Light Beer she pointed out with a smile. Fonda said she was already at work on her next aerobics video and has set her sights on converting the institutionalized Couch not by Michael Decourcy Hinds new York times Hile Gary Busey the actor recovers from head injuries caused by a motorcycle Accident in december legislators in several states Are drawing attention to his Case As they revive attempts to require motorcyclists to Wear safety helmets. The Well publicized Accident has also Given lawmakers and safety experts an Opportunity to promote the use of helmets in Many other recreational sports like bicycling skiing skateboarding and roller skating. Busey who made his Mark in the title role in the buddy Holly Story 11 years ago was Riding without a helmet which would have offered some Protection when his head struck a curb in Culver City Calif. In fact he had helped bring about a veto of legislation last year that would have required him to Wear one. Motorcycle accidents cause More than 4,000 deaths and tens of thousands of brain injuries each year and taxpayers pay most of the Bills for hospitalization and continuing care. The Public is paying for the indiscretion of these motorcycle riders who want to have the wind blow through their hair said Bob Terry a spokesman for assemblyman Richard Floyd of California. By coincidence Floyd a los Angeles Democrat reintroduced a measure to require helmets on dec. 5, the Day after Busey s Accident. Or. Busey and other Hollywood personalities spearheaded the governor s veto of this legislation with their slogan let those who ride decide " Terry said. We say let those who pay have the final say " in California where a fifth of the nation s motorcyclists live $60 million to $100 million is taken from the Public purse each year to pay medical Bills of riders injured while they were not wearing helmets Terry said. According to a 1987 study of data from san Diego county the average Hospital Cost for a motorcyclist injured while Riding bareheaded is $42,291, As against $15,851 for one wearing a helmet. In 1966 the Federal government convinced that helmets were effective began withholding funds for Highway construction and safety programs from states that did not require helmet use. By 1975, 47 states required helmets and the fatality rate had fallen by about half to 6.5 deaths a year per 10,000 motorcycles. But in 1976, motorcyclists persuaded Congress to eliminate the link Between helmet requirements and Highway funds and 27 states repealed or modified their helmet Laws. By 1978, fatality rates climbed 45 percent to 9.4 per 10,000 motorcycles and then stayed More or less level. Twenty one states including new York and new Jersey require All motorcyclists to Wear helmets 25 More require riders under a certain age usually 18, to do so. In most states motorcycle helmet Laws also apply to motorbikes but not to All terrain vehicles or off Road cycles. Motorcycling organizations sometimes base their objections to helmet Laws on things like the helmet s reduction of peripheral vision and hearing acuity. Perhaps paradoxically the same groups support Laws requiring riders under 21 to Wear helmets. Their main objection is that helmets interfere with the Freedom of being completely exposed to the elements. When states attempt to control behaviour Many people feel that is onerous said Eric j. Lundquist legislative affairs director for the american motorcyclist association an organization of enthusiasts with Headquarters in Westerville Ohio. Motorcycle manufacturers support helmet use. It baffles me Why people Don t Wear helmets said death by motorcycle fatalities each year per 10,000 registered motorcycles 16 Kerrie Goodwin a motorcyclist and a spokeswoman for the motorcycle safety foundation a Trade group in Irvine Calif., that promotes the use of helmets in its training programs. Attitudes toward helmets at least among state officials Are changing. The Power to resist motorcycle helmet Laws is weakening said or. Elizabeth Mcloughlin the associate director of the Center for injury prevention at san Francisco general Hospital. The near passage of a mandatory helmet Law last year in California the Only state that has never passed such a Law is one of Many signs of this shift. Nebraska and Oregon began requiring motorcycle helmets for people of All Ages last year and Maryland legislators Are considering doing so this year. State senators in new Jersey Are considering requiring children to Wear helmets while skiing and Vermont officials recommend that All skiers Wear helmets. In new York Suffolk county executive Patrick g. Halpin plans to ask state legislators to consider a Bill to require children to Wear helmets on bicycles. During a National safety Council Campaign on children s safety this month sen Christopher j. Dodd d-conn., plans to hold a hearing about bicycle accidents which kill 400 children and injure 380,000 children a year. In All 700,000 people suffer brain damaging injuries each year including 70,000 to 90,000 who suffer coma and extreme loss of bodily functions according to the National head injury foundation a non profit research and assistance organization in Boston. About 50 percent of head injuries involve motor vehicle accidents 21 percent involve Falls 12 percent assaults 10 percent sports or recreation and 7 percent other Blunt 14 12 10 8 40 helmet Laws became effective a from 1966 to 1969 27 helmet Laws were repealed or weakened from 1976to1979 58 60 62 64 66 68 70 72 74 76 78 80 82 8T source Center for injury prevention. San Francisco general Hospital Page 14 the stars and stripes Good for More than Gridiron new York times Elmets once associated with daredevil activities Are now recommended for sports like bicycling skiing skateboarding and roller skating. Safety specialists in the United states say the helmets developed for those activities Are lighter More comfortable better looking and More effective than old models. Although american manufacturers offer a growing variety of helmets Many can be interchanged a bicycle helmet for example can be used for skateboarding or roller skating. The experts say a fall from a stationary bicycle can cause As much brain damage As a fall from a racing motorcycle. You could get the same head injury by falling off a bicycle in your driveway As you would by sliding on a motorcycle race track at 100 Miles an hour said David r. Thorn a research associate in safety science at the University of Southern California. Government standards for motorcycle helmets require them to give full Protection to the head when it hits a hard surface at 13 Miles an hour in a fall of 6 feet. Any motorcycle helmet sold in the United states must meet those standards and studies have found that the least expensive helmets sold at discount stores for $40 Are As Safe As the ones sold for $400 by motorcycle dealers. Wednesday february 8,1989 not new athletic safety helmets Are lighter More comfortable and versatile. An everyday in remaining by William Stockton new York times he distance Down Highway 513 from Joe Lizzi s driveway to the Crossroads at the United methodist Church and Back at the tiny new Jersey Community of Everitt town in Rural Hunter Don county is 4.6 Miles. Lizzi who is 60 years old has measured it carefully. Each Day precisely at 4 45 ., Lizzi starts Down the shoulder of 513 in the dark walking on the left shoulder so he faces the rare oncoming car. He wears a White sweatshirt and a Day Glo Orange Hunter s Cap and carries a flashlight with a yellow Cone Over the Lens like the one police use to direct traffic at night. His shoes Are common sneakers something inexpensive his wife picked up at a discount store. He easily swings into a fast Pace just under 5 Miles per hour which will Burn about 400 calories total. He does this five or More times a week easily meeting most experts ideas about How much exercise someone should get. Can you imagine going through your Day if you had t done this he asks referring to his walk. Could you make it through the Day it is a rhetorical question which he answers himself of course As an afterthought he adds my wife thinks i m Lizzi who is a maintenance worker for Hunter Don county epitomizes How an individual fitness program should be tailored. First he has picked a fitness activity that he likes. He used to run but after Reading something about the pounding a runner s legs and Knees receive and talking it Over with his doctor he settled on walking. He knows his invariable daily route by heart and revels in the Early morning Solitude. He savors the sound of a Brook passing under the Road through a Culvert the Hoot of an owl the sound of Deer in the underbrush who sometimes burst onto the Road in front of him and then disappear into the darkness. Second Lizzi has built the morning walk into his daily routine with such single mindedness that it is a part of him. In fact he was at first surprised by a companion who came along on one of the morning jaunts and asked about motivation. What inner resource does he tap to Rise from his bed and venture out on a Winter morning before Dawn when the temperature hovers near Zero and All of the outdoors seems to crunch and crackle with the cold people Are born Lazy and you have to overcome that he answered tentatively. It s a matter of getting off your rear and doing but a few minutes and a mile or so later he offered a More thoughtful answer. You have to pick a time that is convenient to your schedule and then you have to build it into your life style he said. It s committing yourself to spend the time and not letting anything get in the third Lizzi has equipped himself properly for his workout. The reflective hat the White sweatshirt and the flashlight Are essential to someone who proposes to walk in the dark. He pays less attention to his shoes for the daily outings seeking Only something that is comfortable. Safety is a prime consideration for Lizzi. He always walks so that he is facing oncoming traffic. When he first sees the lights from an oncoming car he switches on the flashlight and carries it pointed Down swinging lightly in his hand. He does not walk if it is raining heavily or snowing. And he stays Home if the roads Are Slick. Safety first he explained. Population is sparse there and on a typical morning no More than a dozen cars will pass. The windows Are dark in the houses that Are scattered along the Road and across the farm Fields. But Lizzi is Ever conscious of his vulnerability. One morning a year or so ago a Driver approaching from behind in the right hand Lane slowed Down swerved Over into the left Lane then pulled up behind Lizzi and blared his Horn. The Driver paced the Walker for a few seconds it seemed like an eternity and then sped off into the night. I just kept walking on the shoulder he said. There have been people who deliberately drive at you trying to scare you he added. I would t let my wife do this by not that she would want to of course being a sensible person and All that. Lizzi is a Short Man and a trim muscular Man. He weighs 146 pounds which is a Pound More than he weighed 40 years ago in the Marine corps. He spent most of his life running a Lawn Mower shop and later a gun shop in Plainfield n.j., a sedentary occupation that invites a Large belly and heart disease. He has avoided these things All through his life and the reason he believes is largely because he has kept his body Active. I always did something he explained. Perhaps the Marine corps instilled it in him or perhaps it had something to do with growing up in an orphanage and As a Ward of the state in Pennsylvania. If it was t walking it was calisthenic or running. The payoff later in life seems to be a trim body a Youthful look and Energy seemingly boundless Energy. He rises at 4 45, takes his walk eats breakfast feeds his animals reads and gets to work at 8 After work he goes to night classes at a local Community College where he is working on an associate degree in refrigeration and heating technology. You re Only As old As you think you Are he said turning into his driveway exactly 60 minutes and 400 calories after his walk began. The stars and stripes Page 15
