European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 12, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Left Europe Lead Singer Joey tempest left and Bass player John Leven. Tempest below and his band mates Are on tour in Europe. Out of this world by Anita Gosch staff writer in Michaeli was mad. It seems that he and his band mates in the swedish Rock group Europe had been treated like common criminals the evening before in the hotel restaurant in Wurzburg West Germany. The waitress had insisted the scraggly haired rockers pay Cash for their meals instead of charging them to their rooms like the other hotel guests. I mean they treated us like we were some kind of animal like we were just going to run off with the food Bill Michaeli said. Also the service was terrible. We got the main course before the appetizer stuff like it s not that Michaeli and co. Are a Bunch of arrogant Rock stars. Despite sales exceeding 4 million copies worldwide for their last two albums the final countdown and out of this world the Young swedes have remained Down to Earth Fellows who just want to keep on doing their Best at a Job they love doing. Fortunately such incidents of disrespect Are rare Michaeli said. Most of the time people instantly recognize the members of Europe from the covers of teen music magazines. In fact the musicians Are often stopped in the streets wherever they go. It s not like a big mob coming at you it s like you sign a few autographs Chat with the fans. It s Nice to meet the fans once in a while Michaeli said. But in Italy and Spain it s just impossible. When they recognize you you have the whole Street coming after you. They try to grab a piece of your hair or whatever. They re really wild Over there. But it s Kinda in an interview a few hours before Showtime in Wurzburg last week keyboardist Michaeli and Bass player John Leven certainly did t look like the pretty boys they re made out to be in publicity shots and on album covers. In fact they looked tired and a Little bit out of it. Lev6n admitted to having partied until late the night before at a local club but he insisted that come Showtime they would All be fit and ready to Rock. It makes you Wake up he said. You have to i guess. If you re tired you kind of have to get into the Mode. We re pretty much night people we Wake up at 8 o sure enough after showers Coffee and a hefty dose of makeup the boys in the band were hot for yet another 90 minutes of Rock n1 Roll. That ability to get up and go comes from years of practice. Though it might have looked As if Europe was an overnight sensation when the final countdown topped the charts in 1986, the ban members had been paying their dues for some six years. A debut album with Leven Lead Singer Joey tempest and guitarist John Norum hit the top 10 of the swedish charts and became that country s biggest Selling up by a native group. The follow up album wings of tomorrow released in 1985, saw the addition of Michaeli and drummer Ian Haughland. Norum left the band for a Solo career after the release of the final countdown and guitarist Kee Marcello stepped in for out of this world. Despite Europe s Large female following Michaeli and Leven insist the band is not just a pretty boy teeny bopper Rock group. Is Anita Gosch 2 that s not what we want to be said Michaeli. Of course it s Fine that teen age girls like our music but we Don t want to be a teeny i Don t think we Are added Leven. I think it s just something that the Media came up with to find a reason for our Success because you re a pretty Good looking still there was no denying the Large number of Young girls who stormed into the Hall before Showtime in Wurzburg to take their places up front by the stage. Michaeli and Leven also say they re not the Nice clean boys Many music critics say they Are. We re no Angels said Michaeli but we Don t want to die of an overdose either. We re just five Normal Guys we like to party once in a while. We just try to do our Best on stage. We Don t want anything to have a bad influence on our As Belgium.
