European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 16, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers i am writing to you in the Hope that you can help resolve a prob Lem i have lived with for 12 years. I can Best make my pointy telling you a Story of two families. In both families one member has lost the function of his kid Neys and must be on dialysis to to live. In family a upon learning that a sibling needed a kidney transplant All seven of the Broth res and Sisters took the tissue Type tests to see if they could be donors. As it turned out four were Good matches Andas of today 12 years later two have donated kidneys to the sibling in need. One kidney lasted 10 years. The second kidney has been functioning for two years an seems to be doing Well family b presents a totally different picture. In 12years, not one of the kidney patient s Brothers or Sis ters has even asked to take the test to see if he or she might qualify As a donor. I am a member of the second family and the one who is in need of a kidney. I would like to know How my Brothers and sister scan sit by for 12 years and watch me go through dialysis and not offer help. They say they love me but when think about family a i wonder. My question to you is this what does the first family have that the second family does not have disillusioned in Ott Wadear disillusioned the question you have asked is extremely difficult to answer. No one can say for certain Why some children turn out to be Loving and generous while others turn out to be selfish and mean spirited. It cannot be Laid to Good or poor parenting because it is not uncommon to find a whole Range of characteristics Good and bad among siblings who have the same Mother and father. In family a where seven of the children were willing to be kidney donors there May have been factors that outsiders could not know about. Perhaps one or two of the siblings came Forward and by so doing motivated the others lest they appear to be less Loving. The obvious conclusion and it May be quite accurate is that family a produced Loving generous children and family b produced selfish Brothers and Sisters. Why As i said nobody knows. Dear Ann Landers i would like to balance those letters about terrible therapists with a Story about a therapist who was wonderful. My son from the age of 6, visited a caring responsive therapist once a week. When the boy was 9, this therapist developed inoperable bladder cancer. One Day i received a Telephone Call from this voice was so weak he sounded very close to death. He was calling to give me the phone number of another therapist who he Felt would be Able to pick up where he had left off when i Hung up the phone i was in tears. To thin that this dear Man on his deathbed was so concerned about my son that he taxed himself to the limit to Cal me. He died two Days later. I am sure everyone who knew him had a Story like mine to Tell. He was what All therapists should be warm concerned and caring. J.m.f., Annandale Friend in a the Man sounds angelic. How fortunate your son is to have had someone like him in his life. Your letter was a great tribute. European edition col Jeffrey m. The desert did not kill this Marine the Leader responsible for the mix up in communications did. I seem to remember that this is not the first time the stars and stripes reporting a Marine forgotten and left behind. It is difficult for me to understand How the Marin scan write off a slow death in the desert of one of their own As a mix up without some sort of investigation of responsibility so that it does t happen again. Name withheld Vicenza Italy editor s note it. Col. . Peck head Media Branch Public affairs division he . Marine corps Washington ., replies this is in reference to the letter to the editor which you received and forwarded to us concerning the death of Lance Cpl. Jason Rother during a combined arms exercise at Twenty nine Palms Calif. We share your Reader s dismay Over this tragic death of a Fine Young Marine. As you May have seen or read recently the commandant of the Marine corps Gen. Gray feels just As strongly that the circumstances Inthis Case Are intolerable. As the commandant noted in his endorsement on the investigation the actions of a number of marines in positions of authority reflected a state of mind which is counter to every principle of leadership on which we have traditionally prided ourselves. Lance Cpl. Rother s death was not accidental. It was the foreseeable result of a series of acts consciously committed by Well trained and experienced Marine offi cers and non commissioned officers. His death was the certain consequence of an attitude that Gen. Gray in tends to erase from our Marine corps. For a number of years we have been training in a never style warfare. One of the Basic principles of this Type of training is the need to ensure that All marines two echelons up and two echelons Down be completely aware of the commander s intent Mission and tasks scheme of Man Euver safety restrictions and Overall conduct of the exercise. If that principle had been scrupulously applied in this instance Lance Cpl. Rother might be alive today. The commandant re emphasized that principle to All his commanders with the Stern warning that those who choose to ignore it will be relieved and subject to disciplinary action. So i can assure your readers that Gen. Gray agrees with the letter writer about the importance of proper leadership and the responsibilities that leaders have toward their marines. I can also assure you this matter has been thoroughly investigated so that those responsible for this tragic death will be brought to task. Three marines have been charged and Are awaiting courts martial. Four officers in the Chain of command everyone from the platoon Leader to the battalion commander have been relieved of their duties and reprimanded. Nothing in this world grieves us More than the senseless death of one of our marines. Our grief is even More bitter and difficult to Bear in a Case like this because some of our fellow marines apparently violated a sacred Trust to take care of our own. The Price paid for their betrayal of that Trust was the life Ofa dedicated Young Marine. Since the above reply was written two of the three marines charged in the incident were found guilty of negligence and reduced in rank. The disposition of charges against the third Marine is pending.
