Horror fans will relish Serpent and the Rainbow by Chuck Vinch staff writer anyone with an interest in horror films is sure to recognize Wes Craven s name. He is the Veteran Gore Meister whose most recent contribution to the genre was the first and Best chapter in the Nightmare on Elm Street series which unleashed Freddie Krueger on an unsuspecting America. Craven is Back with the Serpent and the Rainbow which actually has a decent Story line and is much More stylish than some of his other efforts. The film is very loosely based on a 1985 non fiction Book by former Harvard botanist Wade Davis. It stars Bill Pullman most recently seen As Lone Starr in Mel Brooks space balls As anthropologist Dennis Allen who goes to Haiti to research the phenomenon of zombies in the clays before the fall of dictator Jean Claude Duvalier. When Allen stumbles upon a drug that induces the Zombie state in recently deceased corpses an american biomedical firm requests a Sample. A company executive tells Allen that the powder could revolutionize anaesthesia. Unfortunately for Allen and his haitian Contact a doctor at a clinic for Zombie drug victims played by Cathy Tyson Duvalier s dreaded secret police the Tonton Machutes use the drug to keep the people under their thumbs and thus want its ingredients to stay secret. Soon the Machutes Are pulling out All the stops to Force Allen off the Island for Good. There s less Gore than in other Craven movies but there s still plenty by general standards. A lot of the scenes alternate Between reality and Nightmare As the local police chief also a powerful voodoo priest plays with Allen s head in an attempt to scare him off. When that does t work he drags Allen to the local torture chamber for a sequence that will have particular significance for male viewers. Don t say you weren t warned. Craven also indulges in a lot of close up camera work a Staple of the horror genre because it enables the filmmaker to have things jump on screen unexpectedly. You have to give Wes credit his reputation May have been built on Low budget schlock but he knows How to manipulate a camera for some truly imaginative sequences. Going against his nature he keeps a relatively tight rein on things until the very end during the climactic Battle Between Allen and the police chief when Craven can t resist getting too much out of hand to be believable. But the whole Story is far out so Why quibble the special effects Are great and while Pullman is a Bland leading Man Craven keeps things hopping along at such a frenetic Pace that you won t notice any deficiencies in the acting. If you re into thrills chills and blood spills Craven will give you a Case of the willies in the Serpent and the Rainbow. If you re a horror fan give this one three stars. If you re not you la probably think the whole thing is stupid and not Worth More than one. Stripes Magazine 23
