European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 17, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes Friday february 17,1989 outdoor adventures when Fox Hunt turns into Fox Trot Wei Brocken s Jake Chamberlain reflect Don one of my tales about Hunting alone the other Day then launched into one of his own stories that went something like this you Are quite right when you remark upon thematic communion with the Forest that comes to the thinking Hunter on a solitary Hunt. Even so Mark there Are some moments during group Hunts that can have a form of spirit As Well. Take for example Wei Brincken s last drive Hun of the season on a nearby depot in january. It was the Normal Gaggle dogs Hunters friends an neighbors Roe Deer Fox All running around and through a Thicket or standing for Long periods of Tim waiting for things to come out of a Thicket. Noonday meal in the open with Hunting stories and other conversation and at dusk the ceremonial honors to the Hunters and the wild game. Six of us five germans and a new englander stood in line to sound the traditional Calls on our Hunting horns at the proper moment. All was very proper. The most dignified forester in the District was in charge and the dogs were actually sitting trying to play the proper role instead of lolling around. A Fox had been taken during the Day and we with the Hunting horns suddenly realized How Long it had been since we had played the Call in tribute tothe Fox. So we huddled and searched through the pocket size music Book one of us had luckily brought along. We found the tune tried to whistle through it a time or two then got ready to play. Mark Swearengen the forester made a charming and dignified speech the dogs continued sitting up the Hunters kept a form of Parade rest and we Field musicians inhaled and warmed our mouthpieces. We gave the usual series of Horn signals and then attacked the Call for the Fox. The Call counterattacked. Someone or several of us had mislaid at least three of the dots in that bit of music. But rethought fast As Hunters sometimes do. It was As though we had taken a conference in the space of note realized that we were hopelessly lost some where along about Dot number 12, and agreed to meet again on the other Side at the last six dots which everyone knew. We made it through without further damage and came out at the end together. Then we stood left hands on hips Hunting horns held just so looks of Bland innocence on our faces gazing at the tops of the Pines Over the forester Shead. The forester stood gazing at the tops of the Pines Over Pur Heads the Scarlet of his face making Lovely distinction Between his Silver hair and his Gray uniform. The Hunters were trying not to look a anyone. And the dogs Well they were actively participating. It was the first time we had played any thing they could enjoy and so were having a sing along that continued Long after we stopped. We All went to supper As soon As we could Stop Waidman Sheil.
