European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 30, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday March 30, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 a most do prep Pickin s selection of the 1989 stars and stripes All Europe basketball teams including naming the play ers and coaches of the year brought Down the cur lain on the Dodds Winter sports program and Lumen the sports spotlight toward Spring activities which arc just around the Comer. Because there was so much Talent . Making the final choices for this year s teams especially he boys team was indeed a most difficult task despite the tact that i had seen 24 boys and girls teams play at least one game. Doubtless there will be some people who won agree with the picks but that happens twice every Dodds year once in december when football de terminations arc made and again in March when it s basketball s turn 1 thank Al the coaches who submitted Nomi nations with Complete statistics and pictures. I especially appreciate the thoughtful Ness of All those coaches who included recommendations on opposing players and coaches and there were More this year than in ret Cal past seasons. Thai kind of support reduced an almost impossible task Down to a most difficult one. Even with the coaches recommendations and my personal observations Iri ook a Good Deal of thought and compari son before the final selections were made. Some coaches As always failed to nominate any players maybe because hey believed icy didst have anyone qualified for All Europe consideration thai thinking is logical. However they could have made a suggestion or two concerning some worthy opponent. 1 received this past monday nine Days after the deadline a co Pic of nominating letters from coaches whose seasons ended in february sent via Aho. The tardiness was difficult to comprehend be cause every team except those in Turkey completed com petition several weeks earlier and coaches had plenty of time to submit their recommendations coaches in Turkey got their recommendations in online and they had Only a week to do so t always have recommended International mail when a deadline is involved because Apo generally in t that reliable. So there exists a possibility thai a deserving player or two May have been left oof the teams. I Hope not. considered for. to have been nominated by his her coach to be consid ered. As usual the Competition for players and coaches Benabram of the year was quite keen. Reckoning was based on just that play during the entire year. Some people May have had super tournaments but were less impressive Over the whole Campaign. They probably were rewarded with All tournament recognition. There were several coaches who put their emphasis on career performances Only 1933-89achievements were considered. Having made stars and stripes All Europe last year docs i necessarily guarantee a repeat performance. That has to be earned. There were Many outstanding performances Dur ing the season but Keri Hillham of Wiesbaden was consistently very Good. She was a clutch performer for coach Mike Montoya All year and almost sin Glen Anderly led the warriors to the big schools championship against a much bigger Heidelberg team Holtham boosted her stars Ana stripes player of the year cause by earning her second straight big schools tournament most valuable Flayer award. Heidelberg s Cindy Cabo american school i London s Stacey Mcca Force and Dan Lela Buna accents Megan Barman and Ankara s Jackie Stap Chuk were prime contender for the Honor. Winning a championship in t necessarily the prime Factor in Del Ermine the coach of the year. Anis ready s Vilseck team came close to Takin the Small schools title despite a .500 finish in league play. The Falcons lost to Germany a South Champi on Munich in the semifinals of Hie Southern Region Al qualifying for the Small schools tournament but they beat second place Augsburg for third place. Then they conquered undefeated Germany a Centra Champion i Essen and Hahn to reach the title game against accent. Cohort Tim Boivin. Covered the Small school tournament and was impressed with ready s coach ing. He reports ready had virtually no size and no Bench. So she played a patient spread offence against the other teams zones. Idling Maria Armstrong run 1 should say walk the offence around the perimeter As the others constantly Cut through the Lane. Once the opponents zone loosened up either Armstrong drove to the hoop or one of the other Falcons would get free Down Low for an easy shot. Using a a 2-1 defense. Ready stressed packing h insight controlling the Lane and thus having position on the boards even through her players were smaller Pricilla Keanaaina although one of Floc smallest enters in the tournament at 5-9, controlled 1 he boards through the first two games and Kelly Cunningham came through with key boards also. It boils Down to this using Only five players ready s Falcons should have been blown Oul by Hahn and Giessen. Both deeper clubs which played girls off the Bench and should have 1 ired out Vilseck. But ready did her Homework stressing to the girls that they had to play within their limitations and not to try to play the other team s Type of game. She knew what the girls were Able to do and de signed her offence and defense accordingly. And she got the Iris to believe that they were As Good As any earn Here even Hough their record was the worst coming Montoya Vicinia s Joe poll Crit Mannheim Short Blank Gissen s John hed Buryj. Accents John fatten and Brussels Don Birdsong were among the leading challengers to ready s selection. Several other coaches had very fire seasons but they had a wealth of material and were expected to arc very Well. The boys Choice for player of the year was almost As difficult to make As selecting the team there were several outstanding performers. In the Long run it was decided that Frankfurt s Mike Kinder had done More for his club than the others had for theirs. He was an outstanding performer All season and he led the eagles to their first dig schools championship in 27 years. Others in consideration included Wiesbaden s Rob Harris shape s Andrea Pizzulo. In Ciurlik Gary Evans and Alconbury s Marcus Davis naming Frankfurt s Bill Snyder As boys coach of the year was made pretty easy for me by other recommended him. Like me they were impressed with the Job he did All season arid his astute masterminding in the big schools tournament was the icing on the cake. Other coaches in the picture included Alconbury s de Anderson Mannheim s Darry Andrew Merlin Gene Brown. In Ciurlik s Jeff Krohse Shal e s Mark Williams and american school in London s Chuck Dodson to swi fl4 by rpm All Europe from Page 17 a football injury but he came along to assume his leadership role and led the stallions into the big schools title game. He averaged i3.s Points 7.i rebounds and 3.9 steals. They say that the sign of a Good coach is the ability to have the team Peak about tournament Jime. Frankfurt and Vilseck came along perfectly Snyder s eagles going All the Way and ready s fal cons making it to the championship game against stronger adversaries on paper at least Vilseck finished with a 5-5 league record but the Falcons placed third in the Southern regional to qualify for the Small schools finals. They lost to Munich in the semifinals and beat Augsburg for third the Small schools tournament Vilseck beat Giessen 10-0, first in a Central .44-35 in its open ing game in the semifinal the Falcons beat Hahn 7-4, 3rd in Bennor 50-34 holding the i Hawks to Tofield goals and Only six shot attempts from the Field in the second Quarter. That made three straight wins Over teams with belter records then the Falcons had. The Bubble burst in the against of cent but ready and heir Falconi had made u vivid impression. Snyder s Light really shone in Lou Najm no action Especial in the semifinal and title games against Mannheim and defending Champion Stuttgart. Iris game plan was Well prepared and the eagles followed it to perfection. 1988-89 is All Europe basketball teams the girls1 squad the boys squad position player Forward Cindy cafe Forward St Lccy Mccun Tartu of nerd Sandy Kwityn Tiu Forward Kim Len Lundt Center Titian Buerman Center Kors Len Keller guard Kari Hott Fura guard Daniels Bur guard Jackie Lapchuk guard Malquin James school height class Heidelberg 5-1j senior Asl s-8 senior Asl 5-9 senior Mannheim 5-6 Settlor accent 6-0 senior Heidelberg 6-2 Junior Wiesbaden 5-7 Junior Asl 4 Junior Ankara 5-5 senior Brunei 3 freshman1 second Lett forwards Heather Schmidt Vic Tina Parri Williams Baum older Lauri Malone Munich Christy Mcneil Cheryl Craney Wora Buric Rebecca Patch guards Karen Dandridge Heidelberg Maria Armstrong Vilseck Lynn Bond Hahn Polly Farmer Asu player of the Yew Ker hit Ulm Wiesbaden coach of the car Janis ready Vilseck position player Forward Andrea Pizzat Forward Mike Kinder Forward Darlun by utri Forward Damiun Johnson Center Rob Harris enter Marcus Davis guard Gary fans guard Jimmy Parker guard Chris Nolan guard Ron Thomas school height class shape 6-3w senior Frankfurt 6-3 Junior Sunsten 6 Setlur Karlsruhe 6-5 Sophomore Wiesbaden a senior Alconbury 6-5 a senior in Vrlik 6-0 Junior shape 5-10 senior Mannheim " 6-0 senior soul Gurt 6-0senior second Tatum forwards James Mcknight Wei Brincken Oliver Jones Alconbury Jerry i shop Augsburg Milch Lister stut gut.
