Los Angeles times syndicated columnist Landers Welcome your letters. You can write to her in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Force. I writer asks about commissary shortages i am writing because of the recent out of Stock Situa Tion at our commissary in Augsburg. Some of the items i have been looking for have been out of Stock for a number of weeks. I doubt this situation exists because of poor manage ment. I can say that Pur commissary has improved in service and in supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables since my husband began his tour in Germany but the out of Stock situation is disturbing me. Items such As disposable diapers Brown sugar and Kool Aid both regular and sugar free arc missing and the shelf space is not being utilized. The shelves arc a Bare reminder of what once was there. Is this a problem All Over Europe if not Why not ship these items in from another commissary i be talked to salespeople at the commissary who say it was available yesterday or last week and another shipment is expected any can you help me out unfortunately with three toddlers i have neither the time nor the Energy to pursue this problem myself. Sally Pearcy Augsburg West Germany editor s note col. Paul w. Phillips com Mander us. Army troop support Agency european commissary Region replies there Are numerous factors that affect Stock Avail ability in our commissaries. These include late deliveries ordering problems and cancellations caused by the manufacturer s inability to Supply the items ordered. We do our Best to ensure that when these problems occur they will not adversely affect our customers. In part we do this by ordering enough so that we maintain safety leads in our warehouses but it is not always possible for us to control All circumstances. Please Bear in mind that most of our merchandise comes from the United states and arrives in a commissary 75 to 90 Days after a commissary officer has submitted his order. The shortage of disposable diapers was in part a re sult of order cancellations by the manufacturer of one of the most popular brands of diapers. Customers bought More of the competing brands which severely reduced the inventory Levels of All diapers. We did Cross lever available diapers among cur commissaries but of course that could Only serve As a Short term fix. The Augsburg commissary increased its orders and is currently stocked with diapers in most sizes and brands. Similar situations occurred with the Brown sugar and Kooi Ald. Both shortages should now be corrected. You will be Happy to hear that a special order was recently submitted to ensure adequate supplies of Kool Aid Dur ing the summer months. Often when we Cross level we Are Only Able to bring in Small quantities at a time. Once on the shelf these products go quickly since customers who have not been Able to acquire the product for some time will buy More than they usually do. If there Are items you need and cannot find please ask your commissary officer when they Are expected and whether you can place a special order. Don t be duped by ads Reader warns Well i guess we be seen about everything in this Freedom to Gripe column. Oops wait a minute i think i have a hot one i Haven t seen. About three years ago while stationed in Germany this is my second tour my wife and i were thumb ing through one of the free to magazines. Sec All this Beautiful German furniture she said. Our stuff is really old and the Mark rate is at the time it was Over 3 Marks to the Dollar Well we called the company. Soon we were visited by salesmen. Yes the furniture was German made. Yes the frames were All Oak. Did the living room set we were looking at come with special Feather ticking yes but for a Small additional charge financing no problem Well folks our chair arrived with a cracked Arm inside its overstuffed self. But Oak is so Strong my wife said. We called the company. They knew Noth ing of Oak Wood. It was Beech. They replaced the chair. We made our payments to the Bank in new York. The set was All paid off when we went Back to the states. Well it sustained a rip during shipping and guess what the $400 or so we paid for Licking was a laugh not a Feather in the set. While vacuuming one Day my wife ran across the tag Down in the fold 9f the Couch. Made in of Well a a live and learn huh when we arrived Back this time we brought the delighted with ant recipe hurray i have always been curious As to Why my ants were not cooking properly in my microwave thanks to the recent curious shopper in the stars and stripes i am enlightened i will soak those Little suckers in marinade first 1 might even be so bold As to try a cockroach casserole i have never gotten any useful information from curious shopper but my Faith has been restored thanks Kim Hunter Garls Ludl West Germany same set and started looking through the furniture ads again dumb fools that we Are. We spotted a Beautiful leather set so we sent a card in and received a Quick phone Call. My wife explained the ordeal we had been through and that first we would like a fab Ric Sample and a Sample of the Tiller. We wanted a guarantee that the Wood was Oak. We would be pleased to do business with them if they were honest to every degree. We never heard from them again. Nuff said. From our experience we urge All military person Nel to shop with care and investigate their purchases completely. Find out the construction of what you Are buying and have it in writing. When you Pur Chase mahogany make sure it is that and not just stain. I am sure there Are a lot of reputable Compa Nies out there but beware we Don t believe we have seen a letter on this subject but since so much of this furn Tirc is offered in our magazines we thought it important. Soldiers and their spouses work very hard for their Money and being taken is a pure shame. Incidentally we still Sec our set of living room furniture advertised and we wonder if they represent it the same Way. We have purchased Antiques in Ger Many and wanted our living room to be authentic. Watch out staff sgt. David and eve Shriner Nellinger West Germany pen pals i m 25 and looking for in pals.
