On thursday paid a $250,000 Fine after pleading guilty to paying bribes to get tire business with the government of Iraq. In . District court the Akron Ohio company a subsidiary of Goodyear tire & rubber co. Admitted a single count of violating the anti bribery provision of the foreign corrupt practices act of 1977. From the fall of 1979 to the fall of983, Goodyear International obtained $19 million in iraqi govern ment orders for truck tires in return for an agreement to pay nearly $1 million in bribes according to documents released in court. The activities were carried out by David j. Janasik then the company s regional Export manager for the Middle East. Also involved were senior Goodyear officials including the sex director of Export operations and the former executive vice president the documents said. Janasik and Mohammed Jassim an official of the iraqi slate owned trading organization discussed Goodyear s interest in getting a share of the tire Busi Ness during a meeting in the storage room of a Bagh dad company the papers said. Jassim told Janasik that Goodyear s competitors in France Korea and Japan had been willing to pay Cash commissions to ensure a Good relationship with the purchasing organization iraqi trading co. Jassim also said that without such payments Good year could Only Hope for limited business according to a government statement of facts released in court. Janasik told Jassim that such payments were against Goodyear corporate policy. Janasik related the meet ing in a Telephone Call to his Superior then gics assistant director for Export operations at his office in Akron Ohio the statement continued. Janasik s Superior discussed the conversation with his Superior Goodyear International s regional director for Europe and with a company vice president. Regarding Janasik s Contact in Iraq the vice presi Dent told the assistant Export director to get the Busi Ness i Don t want to know How the statement said. Goodyear generated the bribe Money by arranging for a greek marketing company to perform superficial marketing studies not Worth the $430,000 that Good year supposedly paid. Goodyear generated an additional $531,124 to pay the iraqi officials through fictitious invoices purporting to reflect Arab language advertisements of Goodyear products in Baghdad newspapers. Janasik pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return in which he failed to declare a $75,000 Kickback he received from the iraqi intermediary for his services. He was fired by Goodyear sentenced to two years Proba Tion and fined $10,000. Goodyear said in a statement that it uncovered the wrongdoing after initiating its own investigation into the Case and that it alerted the Justice department and turned company findings Over to the government in 1985.
