European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 16, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers an acquaintance or mine has upset me terribly and i need to know if i am in the wrong. Our daughters Betty and Edith both 5 years old and in the same class at school were Best friends. These Little girls were virtually inseparable. They went everywhere together. 1thought it was wonderful because neither has siblings. Now the problem Edith s Mother decided that these Young stars were attracted to each other sexually. Why because occasionally they would give each other hugs. I asked my child Why they did this and she said because one of us was mad or sad about i saw nothing wrong with this. My daughter has always been open about her feelings. Her father and i arc affectionate people and we Are a Loving and demonstrative family. I tried to explain this to my Friend but it was like talking to a Wall. My daughter is no longer invited to Edith s House to play and Edith is not allowed to come to ours. It is disturbing to see a healthy Young Friendship turned into something ugly and perverse. I refuse to believe that 5-year-Olds can have sexual feelings about one another. Please comment. Mba in san Antonio dear mba How sad for your Little girl but sadder still for her Friend. Her Mother s thinking is warped in ways that could affect the child s entire life. I Hope the woman sees this column and decides to get counselling. She needs to hear Froin authority that it is Normal and healthy for same sex children to be affectionate toward one another and that it has nothing to do with erotic feelings. Dear Ann Landers the Erhler from use it or lose it hit Home. Here is my Story i married a terrific Guy who was goal oriented a super achiever. Although he was Only 27 i was 23he had enough Money to buy a Lovely Condo and furnish it beautifully. That was his wedding gift to me. We got along fairly Well but there was one big prob Lem that we were never Able to resolve. He would get up at 6 . Every morning full of Pep and raring to go. I loved to sleep until 9 or 10. He asked me at least a dozen times to please try to readjust my body clock so that i could get up and have breakfast with him. I told him i thought it was inconsiderate of him to ask me to do this and i refused to make the Effort. That was three years ago. Today we Are divorced. He married a 28-year-old woman who used to work in the Coffee Simp where he went for breakfast. They Are expecting their first child in a few weeks and i am kicking myself i Philly dear kicking yourself obviously you Aren t writing for advice you Are giving it and i thank you. It appears that the Early Bird sometimes gets More than a worm. Dear Ann Landers the letter about the woman who placed her underwear in the microwave to kill bacteria that cause yeast infections caught my attention. The microwave blew up please Tell your readers that nuking undies is a very Good Way to kill the fungus that causes vaginal infections in 20 million women but the undies must be Cotton. E.., Sacramento dear e . In my opinion underwear of any kind in the Micro wave is not a Good . Los angelas times syndicated columnist Landers welcomes your letters. You can write to her in care of the stars and stripes. Apo 09211. . Forces Minetos Filiai Tana Mettaa m Jim Why most e-3s Don t get to live on base i would like to know Why e-3s and below arc not allowed to live on military bases in Europe. This should be a Benefit when living overseas. Most e-3s and below Don t really make it living off base. Sure we receive rent plus but Only a Small percent of that covers the rent and utilities with the Mark rate always changing it s hard to budget. We live in Tilburg and at the air Force base Here they have four buildings that arc being remodeler which could House 96 families. They also have two buildings right outside the rear Gate. They could re Model those buildings and House 16 More families. The Money they give us under ranking families could be used for building More housing for All ranks with families or they need to Only Send enough personnel for whom they have available housing. This should be done if not for Money reasons than for safety purposes. Military personnel and their families should be in a Safe environment. Many families live As far As 20 Miles away due to the shortage of rental Homes in Pitburg. You hear remarks such As enjoy your tour Sec the sights. How by the time most families pay rent an buy food the Money is gone. When the mid month Check comes in you have other Bills to pay with that Money like the phone Bill car note insurance and Loans or credit cards. You re Lucky enough to buy food until the next Check. Many families must rent dumps because they might be $50-$75 cheaper and they could use that Money for extra or better food. I now understand Why most military families Don t enjoy being overseas. We can t afford to do anything and staying at Home every Day can drive a person crazy we spend our evenings and weekends Reading play ing games going for walks but even that gets Boring. There is so much history Here to teach our child. She tries not to complain but when you re Only 6 and your friends get to do things it s hard sure i could go to work but the Money i d make would go to Gas and child care so Why bother the pressure of living Over Here has caused some people to drink smoke take drugs and abuse loved ones it is very sad but also very True i want to know Why they can t let under ranks into base housing i think the government would save Money in the Long run. Name withheld Pitburg West Germany editor s note col. Thomas n. Good director. Housing and Community services he Safe Deli replies thank you for your inquiry about military family housing Mph for our Junior airmen. Mph is funded and constructed for personnel who have committed themselves to a career in the military i.e., e-4 through o-10. The United states air Force like any private civilian company offers certain entitlements to those personnel who have made a commitment to remain with the company. Mph is one such entitlement. Military members in the pay grades e-3 and below have not made a career commitment and cannot do so until they Are an e-4 and selected for no status. There Are Only a few places in the air Force that have military housing built or allocated strictly for a i through e-3 personnel and their families. At base where housing is excess to the needs of eligible person Nel lower Grade personnel Are assigned government family housing. Additionally there is a Model installation program being tested in the strategic air come which allow e-3s and below to reside in base housing. The completion Date of this test is late 1989. Every member who is selected for an overseas assign ment should be briefed on the overseas conditions and what they should expect. This gives everyone the Opportunity to make choices about bringing families with them. In every country the air Force does housing Cost surveys each year to ensure families get the maximum possible financial assistance with an overseas housing allowance. However those allowances Are established to cover Only 80 percent of the expenses. Until current policies Are changed housing for e-3s and below in military family housing will be limited. Writer wants complaints out of paper in response to All the letters lately complaining about other people complaining or making comments about the Exchange commissary and other things in the military Community 1 want to say this if you like the Way things Are then Fine but Stop complaining about everyone else. You re not any better and besides if it were not for complaints and comments things might not be the Way they Are today. If you make your comments and complaints to the right people you May find out All the whys Hows and what ifs. So instead of sending complaints and comments to the paper where they Don t do much Good How about presenting them to people who can help. I m not exactly sure myself who that could be so maybe the editor could help and give a name address and Telephone number to where you could present these things. I personally am interested. Name withheld Darmstadt West Germany whatever happened to the concept of counting your blessings i must say i m becoming tired of Reading letters from soldiers or their family members who complain about cafes facilities commissaries banking serv housing you name it they complain. Conveniences such As these arc not a right but a privilege when a Soldier first takes the oath and signs on the proverbial dotted line 1 Don t believe the contract guarantees that a certain Brand of hair conditioner Spe Cial size clothing or favorite breakfast Cereal will be available at whatever duty station the May be assigned. I Admire the military s Effort to recognize the Mili tary family and try to meet their needs. I feel they do a wonderful Job and i appreciate what they can provide. However based on what i be been Reading i can t help thinking that some people will complain no matter what you do and the More these people Are Given themore they la think they 1 find that sad. If the military started to House people in five bed room condominiums with swimming pools and maid service would there be some ungrateful individuals complaining about too much chlorine in the Pool or maids leaving dust under the to or not enough Money to afford heating a House so Large yes. Where docs it end some people will never be satisfied. I feel you arc wasting valuable newspaper space responding to Petty complaints. If these people find the military benefits they presently enjoy so in adequate i encourage them to leave at their earliest Opportunity. I would be interested to see what com parable benefits the civilian sector offers.
